king of the hill is the most loving and accurate.

Something by Larry McMurtry, but I don't know what. Possibly Paradise, which is in no small part about Fiji. Maybe the Duane books -- Last Picture Show, Texasville, Duane's Depressed, and am I forgetting one or is it only the three?

But definitely McMurtry.

my dad hated The Church Lady because it was just too close to home, he said he spent the whole first part of his life itching to be away from those people. maybe i hate King of the Hill for the same reason, because everyone else who likes stuff i like like it. so why i don't feel the same way about "Dazed and Confused"?

Giant is the most James Deanerrific

Some of Bill Hick's routines are so OTM it's scary, especially the ones about his family. The bit about his mother being constantly obsessed with other people's illnesses. Maybe that's kinda universal for women of a certain age and disposition, but the accent really puts it over the top.

Lyle Lovett "That's Right, You're Not from Texas"

The punchline ("but Texas wants you anyway") has only gotten more ominous with time.

Damn, I think a lil' bit of everything people have stated can be picked as true.

KOTH is completly OTM for my stepdad and many of my north TX family. Dazed and Confused, and WAY, WAY more Slacker are the epitome of my central TX friends and family. (two of the best loved characters in Slacker are played by friends of mine).

Personally I've always indentifed with Giant when it comes to my personal identifciaton and personfication of TX pride. But then I've always been a weirdo.

Tep beat me to my answer! There are only three Duane novels, I'm pretty sure, but most of his books are set partly or largely in Texas. Also films: the movie of Texasville is terrible, but The Last Picture Show is among my ten or so favourite films ever, and it's certainly my favourite Texas one.

Music, it's got to be country, and I'd think of Jimmy Dale Gilmore/the Flatlanders (perhaps 'Did You Ever See Dallas From A DC9 At Night') or Willie Nelson.

Obviously nowadays the first thing I think of is Sam.

TV-I third or forth KOTH, altough sometimes Beavis & Butthead hit pretty close to home as well (Remember how the film revealed that Highland was in Texas).

Movie-"Rushmore"! Or perhaps "Brewster McCloud". Why? They are both ingeniously fucked-up depictions of life in Houston.

Music-ZZ Top for Rock (everything from "Tres Hombres" through "Eliminator") Willie Nelson and the Flatlanders for Country, altough the "Urban Cowboy" soundtrack deserves a mention too, despite it's low Quota of Texas artists (or real country).

Books-I need to read more. Thanks for the recommendations!
