How long does it take before you give up on a lost object and buy it again?

N's mention of the Lovin' Spoonful on ILM reminds me that it's been 4 years and 3 house moves since my best-of CD vanished but I still can't bring myself to buy another one. Is this mental?

Yes! 'You didn't have to be so nice' is one of the loveliest songs of all time and the Best Of can be picked up for about a fiver.

I know N. and "Darling Be Home Soon" is similarly essential but I just can't bear to. I can do it if a CD gets scratched or otherwise fucked up but replacing a lost object feels like I'm denying my destiny or something ridiculous.

(There is far too little Lovin Spoonful chat on ILM)

The remote control for my pre-amp vanished some time early in Greenwich (spring '99) - I'm convinced it somehow wormed its way deep into the couch and so, even though I got as far as ringing up the company and pricing a replacement last year, I'm hoping it'll just pop out one day, like the war veterans who sneeze out a bullet 10 years after being demobbed.

Yes, I think the last time they came up was on a discussion about sperm fluid.

Obviously this thread is to steel my nerve to do it in my lunch break.

My copy of the first two Magnetic Fields albums has been missing for almost two years and I still haven't replaced it.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they GET LOST

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 July 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they're only on HOLIDAY.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

They must have taken a WAYWARD BUS.

I rarely replace records/books/etc I have lost because it seems like a waste of the thrill of purchase. It seems much too prosaic, just housekeeping, whereas - ideally - buying something should be a magical leap into unknown possibilities. But that's just me.

Sadly I keep finding my copy of The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs. If anyone would like it, please ask.

There is a magnificent version of "Darling Be Home Soon", very tenderly sung by Noddy Holder, on the Slade "Alive" (geddit?) album. Anyone know where I can get hold of a copy?

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

With albums I don't replace them, because they eventually turn up. I still feel guilty for accusing my sister of stealing a bunch of cds from me when she was watching the apartment, because I finally found all of them about a month ago in a bag at the back of my closet.

Ouch. :-(

You silly man (I'll have it if you don't want it - I've never got around to having my own copy).

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Its yours then, N. I'll give it to you at the weekend.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah!

I haven't been able to find my copy of Legs McNeil's "Please Kill Me" book for years. I think I hid it because I knew these friends were coming over that would want to borrow it but they never return stuff so I thought I was being fiendishly clever. Or maybe they did take it and I have been wishing that I hid it and have constructed a comforting lie.

Also the software CD for my scanner, now that I have newer PC. But there's no irony in that tale.

You should probably be able to download the software for your scanner from the manufacturers website, possibly under 'support' or 'downloads'.

somewhere in my flat is an envelope with nz$40 worth of supermarket vouchers in it; & I'm refusing to buy food until I find them. Getting really hungry, tho.
