Was Cameron homophobic?

It is being assumed that he was, but I'm still trying to work it out.

He was put on the spot about same-sex marriage by Big Brother and said something like, "I don't believe in sex before marriage, and I think marriage should be between a husband and a wife, not two husbands or two wives."

That is essentially a doctrinal belief rather than an active prejudice. The question is whether he would act in a prejudiced way towards gay people. To judge by the way he acted towards the rest of the housemates, who broke many other biblical rules that Cameron believed in, he'd probably be fine with gay people. Maybe the anti-gay aspect of the bible is counteracted by the "judge not" principles in it. I don't know.

He may also be a potential murderer, if comments made in the house are anything to go by.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You are in favour of heterosexual relationships being priveleged over homosexual ones = you are at the very least heterosexist.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Not putting Cameron in the house with an actual gay person was a missed opportunity wrt to interesting telly incidents and giving him an opportunity to challenge his own prejudices.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i think cameron is gay anyway...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

In which sense of the word?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the gay one

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

as in i think it's very likely that he's not entirely straight...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Has there ever been anyone accused of homophobia who has not been 'suspected of being gay themselves'. Is this just perpetuating the idea of homosexuality as insult?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, now that's a fair point, but i didn't actually think he was homophobic - just that he was from a place where these issues weren't discussed/considered too much and held beliefs that further limited his outlook, possibly to his own detriment...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i think cameron was a very asexual person - is it possible to turn off your natural desires if you believe they are wrong or at least occuring at the wrong time? if so i think that is what he has done and if not i will seek my fortune in p0rn and tissues on orkney

james (james), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you certainly can sublimate desire, especially if there is a religious base to doing so. most people don't but bear in mind the guy is from orkney, which is hardly fire island!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Also some people just have lower sex drives.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

He's from orkney, but he's lived in Edinburgh, and is a successful business man, and travels around the world on business trips. He is not the naive island boy he seems to be portraying himself to be.

I don't think it's possible to tell from the things he said and did on BB4. He wasn't exactly forthcoming on his personal beliefs.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You are in favour of heterosexual relationships being priveleged over homosexual ones = you are at the very least heterosexist.

Don't you mean homosexist?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 July 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

and anyway, i still think he is gay (not an insult, i just do)...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The word is 'gaysexist' actually.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

-ist as a suffix doesn't really mean 'against whatever precedes it', Dan. Not that heterosexist makes sense either. I guess sexualityist would be more accurate than the kind of loaded 'homophobic', but it does sounds shit, I accept.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought heterosexist was a pretty standard term. Oh well.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps 'heterocentric' wd be better.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was looking at "homo" + "sexist", not "homosex" + "ist". IOW, if a sexist judges people based on their sex, a homosexist judges people based on their homosex[uality]. (I agree that "sexualityist" is a more accurate if dumber-looking word.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm heliosexist, I want to fuck everything under the sun.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Heterocentric would be much better.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm heliosexist, I want to fuck everything under the sun.

No goths for Tracer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha ;-)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was going to be about Cameron in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". Silly me.

Let my Cameron go.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha, I was just about to post re FBDO.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there something in the Bible explaining that gay people can't marry? Or that there is something wrong with lesbianism? That's not a challenge, but I've not heard of either.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Has there ever been anyone accused of homophobia who has not been 'suspected of being gay themselves'. Is this just perpetuating the idea of homosexuality as insult?

Yes, I think so. My best friend in Uni came out whilst at Uni, and all was fine until one night a friend of a friend of his insulted him in a homophobic way (I can't remember the exact situtaion, but it was the first time he had experienced prejudice because of his sexualtiy) and he came in to my room in tears, and in trying to console him I used that logic - and immediately thought it was the stupidist thing I had ever said to him (I still feel like an idiot for saying it).

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 28 July 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Was Anita Bryant, then, secretly a shame-addled, orange juice-swiggin' lesbian?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Captain Butter Underpants (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Captain Butter Underpants and the Shame-Addled, Orange Juice-Swiggin' Lesbian -- the latest adventure!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Captain Butter Underpants and the Shame-Addled, Orange Juice-Swiggin' Lesbian

This should be the title of the new Limp Bizkit album.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

bit highbrow for them

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay then; how about _Titties_?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

How about tri-sexual? You'll do anything for three bucks.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay then; how about _Titties_?

Would they be able to spell that?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)
