The "proper" term in Inuit. Since I will probably never meet an eskimo, I don't care.

Doesn't it mean "meat eater" in the language of a meighbouring tribe?

The fact that they call themselves Inuit has been common knowledge in the UK for (I'd guess) the last ten years.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i think that they prefer to be called "inuit." if that's what they want to be called, then why not?

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Because it sounds far too much like common-or-garden lazy-gobbed teenage streetslang "innit", innit?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

or Harry Enfield's character Stavros, even. Now he was definitely a meat eater!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that it was one of the ILX canadians who told me about how they prefer being called "inuit." since i don't live in alaska and otherwise i live quite far from the us-canada border, i probably wouldn't have know otherwise. whether or not other americans are as ignorant of the inuits' preference, i don't know.

This is at least the 4th time we've had this thread and it all ends the same.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I'm imagining an Inuit gangsta rapper saying: "Yo! Whassup, my eskimoh?"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It involves Eskimo Pies, Momus and offended Canadians

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

C J (C J), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Careful, you don't want Nanook to rub it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 July 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Inuit traditional singing is far out man; they sing into each other's mouths and create these weird shifting overtones. It's really quite bad-ass.
