What are some good Indo-Pakistani restaurants in Manchetser?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to live on Rusholme Rd. in Saskatoon.
There were no Indo-Pakistani restaurants there.

When are you going to Manchester, little Mary?

I used to live in Rusholme and was never very impressed with the quality of the food on its famous 'curry strip'. The Tandoori Kitchen was the best one, then, as far as I can recall. It's nice to just wander down though. Much like Brick Lane but with more traffic.

all brit curries taste nice to american tastebuds. or maybe it's just my american tastebuds.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah stop posting today horace i need to overtake you on the statscock!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

well, I was going to be slow (and actually, y'know DO WORK), but now that I've been challenged...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Royal Naz is good of the Rusholme ones and Rajdoot is good in the city centre.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 July 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I like the Tandoori kitchen. The popular ones are the Shere Khan and the Shezan. This might help. There's another one which I used to go to a lot which I've completely forgotten the name of and might not even be there any more. I'm no help whatsoever, am I?

Do not go to the Royal Naz unless you want dry rice and warm beer.

There's also an ace Nepalese place, the Ghurka Grill, in West Didsbury that we go to a lot.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 28 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to confuse things, the best curry I ever had was in Harrogate.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 28 July 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gone now, but there used to be a grotty curry restaurant on Upper Brook Street in Manchester, near the Manchester Royal Infirmary. The speciality of the Plaza was absurdly hot curries - the menu (in order of scorching your tastebuds) included Killer, Suicide, Charlie's Special (named after the chef), Cremation and Goodbye. If you could handle a Suicide or above, you earned the right to buy one of the infamous "Plaza Suicide Curry" T-Shirts.

I couldn't manage a Suicide all of my own, but manfully attempted a forkful of someone else's. How hot was it? Well, imagine you get a few vegetables, some tomato and curry sauce, and then you add a pint of car battery acid, and that is about it. I thought I was indeed going to die. The tingling sensation spread all down my throat and out along my arms, until my hands started shaking. I learned too late that you should avoid drinking a glass of water at all costs, because the active components of curry are water soluble so drinking water only makes it much, much worse.

When are you going to Manchester, little Mary?

Hopefully in September.

Are the best Pakistani restaurants off the curry mile?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 July 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

My guess is that there are better ones elsewhere, yes, but seeing as my Manchester knowledge is about 10 years old, I shall let Tag and others answer.

Incidentally, do you specifically want Pakistani? I think the owners and chefs of subcontinental restaurants in Britain are more often Bangladeshi than Pakistani or Indian, but I'm not exactly sure if this is the case in Manchester. There is generally a wave of 'new authentic' restaurants creeping across the UK that tries to get away from the pervasive curry gloop British 'Indian restaurant' cliches. Don't know what the state of those in Manchester is.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 28 July 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Most of the restaurants in Rusholme seem to run by Muslims, rather than Hindus. I don't know if they're Indian Muslims or Pakistani/Bangladeshi. A few don't serve alcohol, although some let you bring it in with you.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 28 July 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I didn't want specifically Pakistani, just that in America, we call these Indian restaurants, though they are most often run by Bangladeshis, I thought since Pakistanis outnumber Indians in UK, I should say, Pakistani restaurant. We don't really call the meal a curry, that is so wide and vague. In Japan curry is a catch-all phrase too though.

Where are some other good eats in Manc?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 21 August 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

CHINATOWN!

(Obviously)

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 21 August 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to a nice Italian restaurant somewhere in Manchester once.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You should drink milk to cool your mouth after you've eaten a ridiculously hot curry, Although this may not be on hand in a restaurant!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Lassi should be though.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I heart salt lassi. I always have it, and my fellow diners always ask what it is. I tell them, and they ask to try it. They without fail think it disgusting and the risque have often compared it to spunk. I care not.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 21 August 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Spunk = thread killah!

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Lassi tastes about as good as Lassie (the original dog who is probably dead about twenty years).

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never tried salty lassi because I like the sweet one so much. Most people seem to like it, though yes there is the odd spunk comparison. Only when it's badly made though.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 21 August 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Badly made = made with spunk?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 21 August 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the fear, I suppose.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 21 August 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I love salti lassis.
