anyone have experiences to share? does anyone care? or is it impossible to resist the temptation to have everything you own be cute?

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't they both just BMWs under the fancy exterior?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beetle is a Golf/Jetta under the skin, isn't it? Millar has one, and by something he wrote in another thread, I think he's dissatisfied.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

minis rule. go sit in one.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the mini looks so much cooler. and the original has a better history! Boring hippy epics vs. the fucking OG Italian Job!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

beetles. the problem with the new mini is that it's no longer mini in the slightest. and the foxtons versions with the flames are just wank.

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm happy with the car. I love the car. It's the VW service department and the price of parts that's made me decide never to buy from them again. It's also because the way I end up treating my automobiles isn't really compatible with a "boutique" vehicle. I need something boring where I won't feel like shit every time somebody dings my door in the parking lot.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing is the Beetle is a Golf under the skin more or less, but to actually sit in one or drive one vs. driving a Golf is a totally different experience. The Beetle has a wider wheelbase, bigger tires, and you're sitting in the center of a huge dome so it feels like you're in some kind of space capsule. I looked at both; when I sat in the Golf I was "eh," when I sat in the Beetle it was like I had just gotten a terrible crush on a girl at school and didn't care whether anybody made fun of me or not.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mini stomps all over the New Hippie Beetle.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that look Ed Norton and Brad Pitt give each other in Fight Club before they bust the shit out of that new Beetle.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

presumably the new Beetle hasn't got any of the features that made the old one grebt, i.e. if it really is just a Golf under the skin then it won't be rear engined and make that phut-phut-phut noise.

But anyway, living in Oxford I *have* to say the Mini - they build them here! I can see the factory from my desk here...it is only about five hundred feet away. And it's quite a factory, really modern and clean inside and with a big window through which you can see the Minis being built. They even have plays performed inside the factory with the actors driving round in cars!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Mini. I adore smaller cars and everything from the design to the engineering on this one seems great. The only problem is I have encountered a lot of businessmen from BMW at work and I think they are all cockfarmers so it has kind of soured me on the idea of ever buying one.

The VW bug seems designed for nu-hippies who listen to Phish.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You are mean, Larcole -- my sister, who wisely despises le Phish, has a great silver VW bug that she got a couple of years ago. Far more space age than dopage.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The Beetle is so strongly associated with 60s counterculture that the revival is almost by default nu-hippie.

You have to go to Asia to see any cars that you could really call space-age:

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a silver neo-Bug = it is space age. Besides, you should see the dashboard on that thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Excuses, excuses. It is a silver beetle in SF = it is nu-hippie! I know your sister is not, but her car is.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish we could get Smart Cars in America.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I know your sister is not, but her car is.

Then she boldly subverts dominant paradigms.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Screw 'em both, I want a Nissan 350Z Coupe.. the only car that's caught my eye... EVER. I parked next to one and I wanted to make out with it.

Mandee, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I also want this car.

Mandee, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never known one person with a Beetle, old or new, who was remotely a hippie. This seems weird to me but it's true. My mom used to have a lemon yellow one back in the '70s and she still, like, cries over the loss of this car. I'm gonna ask her to find me a pic of it.

Anyway if I was to get a car I wouldn't want either of those, I want an old fucking fiat convertible.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

This is my mom's car, it is awesome.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Mini Cooper. Accept no substitute.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My father had a '64 beetle, and he was about as far from a hippie as one can be. I also read that VW is shutting (or already has shut) the last old beetle plant left (it's in Mexico) because sales are dropping. They cost half what the new ones do, which are also made in Mexico.

I loved the new ones when I first saw them, but I couldn't get over the fact that they seem to make the worst use of space of any car, being the same size as the Golf but with hardly any behind-the-passenger room. I guess I'm too practical.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

nickn that is exceedingly true. While a hemispherical design does maximize volume per unit surface area, that volume is tucked into places generally inaccessible and hard to utilize for a passenger, especially in the back seats.

That said, I lub my Bug, it zips around like it has six legs and the first time you get behind the wheel, despite the useable volume qualm, it feels so spacious. Emphasis on the space.

I only wish mine were yellow. Then I'd call him Pikachu.

Danzig (Leee), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

So I'm asking my mom what happened to her car, and she's like, "Oh, a tree grew inside it." SOMEONE HELP ME PARSE THIS.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yellow cars = total dud unless you're offering rides in exchange for money

otherwise Danzig OTM of course

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No, dude, yellow cars are good exactly for the Pikachu thing.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

PLEASE GOD I WANT THAT CAR NOW NOW NOW OH MY GOD I MUST LEARN TO DRIVE HOLY FUCK OH MY GOD.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Smart Cars are coming to the US in 2005.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dumb cars will thrive, multiply and eventually crush them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously David? I thought there was no way they could pass US safety standards. They must be revamping them somehow.

Also, the last old-skool beetle rolls off the line today.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the response. i actually have a new beetle but am considering trading in for a new mini. i'm a sucker for cute little cars, but the beetle is starting to make me feel like a sucker. i've heard a lotta people echo millar's sentiment that the service dept. is beyond redemption. vw seems very style over substance. ie. they have the coolest ads, colors and design, and the worst warranty and service. their approach to the 'oil issue' is kind of typical:
exhibit a
exhibit b

whereas people say the mini is actually an amazing, well-built car. but while i'm sure dealing with bmw service dept would be a step up in quality, it might be out of my tax bracket. plus i'd have to get rid of the dual turntables i currently keep my new beetle dashboard. hmmmm...

Smart Cars are probably pretty safe, its just that they're on the road with a fleet that's now more than 50% SUVs.

We've got weird ideas about safety in this country. We drive around in 3500lb death traps that are supposed to make us safe. Wear bike helmets religiously but give no regard for making it safer in the first place. etc.

Bring back lawn darts I say.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
It's a toss up. I think the Mini by a hair because you can customize it more--more colors--and more options for contrasting roof colors, in white or black.

Both look nice in convertible but I'm not so much a top-down girl.

A question: Where do you buy that yellow daisy that sits in the beetle glove compartment? Does VW manufacture it?

For me, unfortunately, the Mini is not practical because the closest dealer is in Sterling, and I wouldn't want to be stuck with something that would take a long commute to fix.

The Mini also shouts "Anglophile" a bit more strongly that I am wan to do.

I like the dashboard of the VW better--seems more intuitive. But maybe I would get used to the knob-centric control panel of the Mini.

I'm not sure I would get a Beetle though, because it seems like too much money for something that you can't cart anything in. Not that I ever do cart anything, but it seems nice to have the opportunity.

However, I've never driven one. Maybe I would have the same cathartic experience as Tom. If I did get either, the colors would definitely be red, and red with white roof for the mini. The aqua blue with white trim is also beautiful. Saw one for sale at the movie theater the other, but my mom was not willing to purchase for me. The bad thing about the used Minis is that they are still so pricey cause they haven't been around long enough.

I didn't realize that the PT Cruiser is Chrysler's attempt at a building a small, retro car. When we went to Memphis I asked for a compact at the rental dealer, and when I took the keys to it I thought they had given me an SUV. It didn't fit quite the rockabilly vibe we were going for, so I am surprised that some people find it's deign pleasing. It also drives like a tool.

If my local Zipcar had a Beetle I would test drive it, but they only have poncey cars. My sister Zips in SF; I would have asked to hold the wheel but I was younger and more innocent than and did not care about automobiles.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're both a bit naff, to be honest. I don't like the kind of pastcihe thing they've got going on (see also: jaguar s-type, audi tt) There's this renault coupe I see around sometimes w/a retractible roof that's quite stylish, I dunno what it's called, and the alfa 156 still looks nice to me, but i hear bad stuff w/r/t reliablilty abt them.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The renault coupe is the megane coupe. The french manufacturers are refreshingly free of retro styling. Renault leading the pack with it's rather outlandish look.

The min has nasty estae agane connotations here in the UK. (One of the UK's leading estate agents gives them as company cars to it's morons). I recon it's the better car though. If only because the Bettle is as big as a golf, whilst ahving none of the practicality, whereas the mini is a small car all round.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The megane coupe is also availible with a super efficient diesel engine,. I'd like to have one just for the incongruity of having a drop top with the burble of a taxi.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! This:

http://www.xposed.com/cm3/pictorial.aspx?pict_id=2138

They look even better irl, probably the best-looking new car I see around these days. Not that I'd buy one anyway!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The cunts speeding along the motorways at 100mph+ are always in nu-Mini's these days. So, dud. But less dud than the nu-Beetle.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

god help me i think the scions are cool looking.

g e o f f (gcannon), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was last driving (abt 18 months ago now) it was the tt that was the shit driver's car of choice, before that it was the golf tdi, and before that, those mercs w/4 headlamps. Someone should do a graph of shit entitlement-issude driver's car of choice on a year by year basis.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, the TT at least looked good (hart-top only, the convertible looks awful) - shame that too was just a Golf.
