Religious nuts hating each other in Northern Ireland (among other places) - it's all a bit silly innit?

"you've got a different interpretation on the Bible than me - so you're gonna die"

Wot?

It's so stupid it would be funny if these moronic Guiness drinkers weren't blowing each other to kingdom come!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah they should grow up and the yanks shouldn't be sympathetic either. It's a "War or terror" without bias surely?

Two friends of mine went to see Good bye, Lenin! the other day, and were sitting around after this talking about how strange it must've been to live in a city with a wall down the middle. Particularly since they'd earlier this year walked from Spain into France no bother (2600 feet above sea level, mind), they were musing about strange it is to think of actual "This is a Border" borders.

Five minutes later:

"Unless, you know, you drove 80 miles north."
"Oh, yeah"

nine years pass...

reading, as part of an idling of work hours series, around the wikis of the figures paramount (paramilitary?) during the troubles, the civilian activists, the political ideologues, the thugs and criminals, have decided that politics is a rotten game, people are inherently fuckin woeful misbegotten animals cursed with a wider awareness than they can handle, that violence is always always always a curse and that attending a UB40 concert is never a good idea under any circumstances.

'Shocking levels of state collusion' led to the UDA killing of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane, but there is no evidence of an overarching state conspiracy, sez Desmond de Silva QC today (relaion of our own nilmar, perhaps?)

I dunno lads, i'm p sure the london govt knew they had invaded somewhere along the line, just sayin.

What do you mean, "invaded"?

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

In fact, what do you mean??!?

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

cursed with a wider awareness than they can handle

attributing a wide awareness to those currently bleating (and rioting) about a piece of coloured cloth wouldn't be my first reaction.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:44 (thirteen years ago)

Rangers are in the 3rd Division, haven't they suffered enough?

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

Sir Desmond’s breadth of legal expertise includes war crimes, espionage, treason, drugs, terrorism, human rights, white-collar fraud and sports law. His clients have included Harry Redknapp, John Terry, Ron Atkinson, Hans Segers, Lawrence Dallaglio, Graham Rix, Lee Bowyer, Jamie Osborne and Jaqui Oliver [3]. He is also a member of the Governing Council of the Manorial Society.[4]

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

I mean 1603 invaded, i mean NI civil rights in the late 60's invaded, i mean you cant be there and not be there and claim it's nothin to do with you invaded, i spose

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

Who invaded in the late 60s? Not that I expect anyone in the Republic to know anything about Northern Ireland.

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)

Oh right, see what you did there. Teaching your grandmother to suck eggs here tho.

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

seemingly somebody invaded yr cornflakes, pissing merrily about them during said conquest

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

Why do you keep falling out with people these days?

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

nhds comms technique runs to brusque, which a lot of ppl bristle at but is to be much admired imo

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

lopster brusque

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

but i was kinda thrown but 'nobody from republic knows anything about NI', which seemed idk, unnecessary? I don't claim to have been subsumed by the troubles or any such, but there's a v complex and intricate relationship that's v much part of the island's psyche, has always been to the forefront of the politics, history, identity, w/e, even in the south (and i grew up not very far from border territory pre good friday).

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

A fat, shit, jittery fraud of a messageboard poster (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

Tom D is secretly an important person (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:31 (thirteen years ago)

hate fighting enemies, if it's aggression needs working out then it's better done with someone who knows the rules and appreiates when they've been hit square

first u get the flower, then u get the honey, then u get the stamen (darraghmac), Thursday, 13 December 2012 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Wikipedia idle work hours investigation continues, how come scorsese never did anything with the shankhill butchers story

the gowls are not what they seem (darraghmac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

Used to know a guy from NI, who was a terrible man terrible man. He was a total raging Proddy/Ulster Scot who'd somehow latched on to this insipid middle class English girl and proceeded to leech off her and do little else but drink and argue with people, we used to call him the Shankhill Moocher

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 12:13 (thirteen years ago)

Ha!

the gowls are not what they seem (darraghmac), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

There was a feature film about the Shankhill Buthcers, was there not?

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 12:19 (thirteen years ago)

The only thing i can spot is "resurrection man"

starting a wikipedia clickspiral into the arcane sects and groupings of the north is always a depressing way to spend a morning BTW but never dull
