(Deep breath)

You can probably trace it back to an Abba obsession at the age of 10. I unearthed some old schoolbooks from that time and there was an essay written about "my favourite place" or some such topic, and yes, it was Sweden. Yet I didn't actually go there until about seven years ago. I think next month's visit will be my fifth to Sweden, and definitely my first to Norway. I've been to Finland and Denmark once each, and Iceland twice.

I love Stockholm, the setting (all that water), the architecture, the bars and some very dear friends there. I wasn't so fussed on Malmo, although Lund was nice enough. Also went way up North to Lulea and crossed the Arctic circle, although I didn't venture far into Lappland. There's not much there, but again, it was the company that made it.

I had a wonderful time in Finland too - saunas and midnight rowing on the lake. Tampere is supposed to be Finland's Manchester (it's far prettier) so maybe that's why I felt so at home there.

My stay in Copenhagen was brief (one night only), but it's a very pretty city. I found Christiania completely fucking scary though.

I'd recommend Iceland to anyone, because there's nothing like it. And try and have one Friday/Saturday night in Reykjavik, where every weekend is like a particularly debauched Hogmanay.

Yeah, it's an old industrial town, and it's even nicknamed "Manse", which is derived from "Manchester". Tampere's a nice, cozy city, less urban than Helsinki or Turku.

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a shame you're not going a week earlier, you could hook up with us.

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, bank holiday weekend is the only time i get to go.

if i go to stockholm maybe i will stay in that yellow ex-prison on the island

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yes, I read about that place. Of course, my dream is to stay in the ice hotel in Lappland. Perhaps on my honeymoon (ha!).

Tag (Tag), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

myself and a freind of mine are crazy about the idea of going to rekjavik for a weekend kinda thing. but we've got no luck finding cheap flights from toronto. i've been told iceland air is crazy cheap but they don't bother with canada. and from what i've seen it's not that cheap either. and what does "every weekend is like a particularly debauched Hogmanay" mean exactly¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh, I really want to go to Scandinavia too, but its awfully expensive.

BTW, are you the Tag from sinister? My friend Lucas from Canada was just talking about a Tag.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently read a book called 'The Smiling School for Calvinists' which reminded me of Warrander John. This seems like as good a place as any to mention it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I am "the Tag from Sinister" and I know Lucas from when we stayed with him in Montreal. He's in NY now, isn't he?

Peter, I haven't seen Warrander John for quite some time - he's a father of two now.

Hogmanay = New Year's Eve in "Scottish".

Tag outed as part of the Sinister mafia!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Geez, everyone knows Lucas.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

He was supposed to take me to the prom and never called. (Lucas, not Tag.)

Genevieve, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"He was supposed to take me to the prom and never called. (Lucas, not Tag.)"

I would have taken you! I had my tux ready and everything.

Go Bergen, Gareth. Stavanger is also good, and full of shockingly pretty ladies. As is Copenhagen. And Helsinki. And Tallinn.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And Tampere. It's fair to say that I saw more foxiness in Finland than any other country I've visited.
