Kick Ass

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey. You went to some well 'ard schools, boys. We were just exhorted to 'grow in heavenly light' or some such nonsense.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Windows are unnecessary"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

women before girls, booze before god

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

'in lumine tou' or 'in your light'.
How very catholic.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey, get out of my light. I can't read."

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kick 'Em Colts."

Texas school mottoes are focused on football.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're not smart enough, get the hell out.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What I gather from the chants at the football games and pep rallies is that our school motto was the phrase "CREEK DAWG!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

balneae pensiles postremus contra murus

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hampshire's is Non Satis Scire, "to know is not enough," which is the only official school motto I've run into that actually sums up the school's ... character.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Probe Te Dignum" - prove yourself worthy

Aaron A., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

college: 'veritas'.
jack_cole, help; was our high school's
motto "lick the beav"?

Haikunym, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

primary school was 'kia kaha, kia toa' which means something like 'be brave, be tall/proud/strong'

High school was something in Latin I can't remember. 'Through hard work to the truth' I think it meant

isadora (isadora), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Grandescunt Acta Labore.

In Montreal, "Grandescunt," well, you can take it from there...

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The last two lines of the school song were:

Hail! Hail to old State high! Hail maroon and grey!
To our alma mater fair, we pledge our lives for aye.

Yes, our colors were maroon and grey. and yes they try to rhyme "grey" with "aye."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(Art is long, life is short)

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Animo et Fide : Courage and Faith" & "Honour the Work"

i lost count of the number of times old boys would return to the school and finish their assembly speech with the line "Honour the work and the work will honour you"

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

High school was "Pursuit of Excellence"

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Non ministrari sed ministrare" (my rusty translation: "not to be ministered to, but to minister unto others")

I heard a few times that years & years ago it used to be jokingly translated as "Not to be a minister, but a minister's wife" since it's a women's college.

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dada, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The weird thing about the "ars longa" one (not in this context, but I thought it was Hippocrates and went 'wait, but he was Greek and the quote is Latin,' so I looked it up) is that -- well, I just said. The quote's remembered in its Latin translation.

Anyway, in his original aphorism it goes on to say: Life is short, the art long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult. -- but I guess the first two cover the last three pretty well.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't remember what the original Latin school motto was, but it translated to "I committ myself to Providence." Yes, this was a Texas high school. Yes, it does come from a source aside from football. Yes, it was from a non-public school. ;)

Yes, our colors were maroon and grey.

Christ, so was my high school's. Ugly grey skirts, white shirts and maroon "sloppy joe" sweaters. HIdeous, unflattering and not even cute in that school uniform kinda way.

Our motto was something latin about hard work and I cant remember it. I try not to remember HS though so it's just as well.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ours was "Mehr Licht": apparently Goethe's last words - Mehr Licht, mein Gott, mehr Licht! - which could either have meant "give me more enlightenment!" or "please open the curtains".

cis (cis), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Manners Makyth Man"

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

HS - vero nihil verius - nothing truer than truth
elementary - something about eternal brotherhood

'Strength through Joy'

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I went to pretentious suburban schools founded 30 or so years ago that always had mottos in LATIN that meant things like "It's good to study" and "Goodness comes from knowledge".

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Live and Learn"

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

High school: Fidem servavi (I have kept the faith)
College: I think it translated into "Mine is the care of the future" or something like that. Mihi cura futura, maybe. I took Latin but I don't remember how this went. :-P

I liked my brother's high school motto: Non scholae sed vitae (Not for school, but for life)

Did anyone see the South Park episode where they went to the planetarium, and the motto above the doorway was "Transmite me, Caledone"? (sp?) God, I love that show. :)

Jasmine U. (Jasmine U.), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, I don't think BHS had a school motto. Although there was a placard above one of the wings upstairs (next to the asst. principal's office) that said "Scientia Potestas Est: Knowledge is Power."

College motto (and name of the alumni magazine): Lux Esto.
