What was the first major news story you knew and cared nothing about?

This is a definite turning point in life isn't it? Intellectual menopause. When there's some serious current events shit going down and for the first time you not only know NOTHING about it, but in truth, you don't really give a rat's ass. Like, when you were younger you'd ask somebody what they thought about [URGENT ISSUE!] and they were "Who gives a shit? Stop bothering me" and you'd be all self-righteous, "I am NEVER going to get apathetic like that in my senility!", then damn if it doesn't happen. BTW to answer my own question - what the fuck is a 'Liberia'? Is this people arguing about registering yachts?

(OK I know about that video with the ear, plus a Senegalese acquaintance told me it was one goddamn rough-ass place, but as for the latest, ?)

I'm enough of a news junkie that while there are a number of stories I might not specifically care about, I'll at least hear about them.

Is this the same as being so overloaded by news stories that rile my feathers and destroy any hope I had left in the world such that eventually I stop giving a shit about anything whatsoever? (ie RIGHT NOW)

well I'd say I haven't watched the news in a couple of months. if ILX wasn't around i might not know anything.

It's been backwards for me. I'm starting to give more of a shit about things as I get older.

For example, this week has been the anniversary of the earthquake in Mexico City twenty or so years ago. When it first happened, I didn't think twice about it. "Oh, that happened in Mexico. That's not here," my 12 year-old self thought at the time, even though 5000 had just perished within my time zone.

And now, my heart goes out to everyone from schoolkids being held hostage in Russia to that baby meerkat that was born in San Diego.

Yeah, I never used to care about the news, but the more I understand economics and politics, the more I understand why these things matter to the worldwide quality of life more than any other issues. I was never in that typical college student "I care VERY DEEPLY about that which I have only the vaguest grasp of" camp.

I think OJ Simpson fits nicely in here...
