Picking up new phrases/slang

how do you assimilate new phrases/slang/vocal tics into your idiolect?

is it ever truly subconsiously? me, i brazenly make conscious decisions to introduce new phrases and stuff to what i say: eg, today i decided to render my farewell message as 'bye, then'. what do you think of that one? i got bored of the default 'seeya' (pron. 'se-er'), and wanted something else.

do you undergo similar thought processes? does your personal lexicon never change? do you speak the same way you did when you were very young?

also, in relation, would it be the worst thing ever if we started (we = ILx people) calling each other 'blud'? i know it to be true, but its soo tempting!

I wanna cookie. Gimme a cookie.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I start it as a joke then can't stop. Sweet! Bitchin! FUCKIN A! I say all these things, yo

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just thinking the other day that fifteen years ago it was terribly awkward and embarrassing for white folks to say 'yo' all the time, but it's so second nature now. Or maybe I'm going deaf and I don't hear anyone laughing at me now, yo. I was also thinking that I'm going to have to start saying 'bag of dicks' in regular speech because no one says it around here and it's a great phrase before it gets overused.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

NO! Ruin...

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well damn, I've already slipped into calling other ILXers "dude". Don't know where I picked that up from! So, if you want to call another ILX dude "blood", you'll have to spell it correctly.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I call everybody, even chicks, dude.
I'm just that kinda dude, I guess.
Though I do it sorta patronizingly.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but you have the strangest (and coolest) slang in the world, Nichole. I mean, even Englishers don't say "Tis"!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, eat a bag of dicks, woncha please?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

NO! Ruin...

Memo to Tim Hopkins:

Though we have considered your request, we are afraid the English language has gone to hell, long since.

Our condolences.

Yours,
Madame God

End of Memo

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've used 'bludd' on here once before and was lambasted. Me and my bredren rudeboy always address each other as 'bludd' or 'geez' but i wouldn't use it on here because i don't have a pally relationship with anyone and it would just seem awkward. Sometimes i cringe when i read some of the slang used on these boards, especially the more Americanised stuff. I guess it's because it's difficult to imagine a voice vocalising posts. I laughed when i read someone say 'speng' though.

sean g, Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If I called someone Bludd, I'd probably beat myself up.

chris (chris), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

even Englishers don't say "Tis"!

Merci, Sir Farrell. You've discovered my secret: I was really born in the 17th century, and transported here via a freak accident.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha "NO! Ruin" is the most blatant example of me consciously stealing someone else's phrase and overusing it in recent years. I say it roughly 100 times a day. Which is why I thought I'd contribute.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the ironing is delicious.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. For me this is a prime example of so little slang of recent years has sunk into me, either in writing or thinking or speaking. If I even tried to say that it would sound terribly awkward etc., so I don't, but really, I never think to in the first place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

> I was just thinking the other day that fifteen years ago it was terribly awkward and embarrassing for white folks to say 'yo' all the time

Unless you lived in Philly - at one point they started this really embarressing event to celebrate the city called "YO! Philadelphia"

H (Heruy), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Also possibly I might be going def.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well damn, I've already slipped into calling other ILXers "dude". Don't know where I picked that up from!

HAH! Nichole, I started saying this too. And I know exactly why. You and I have a common friend who happens to say this ALL the time.

And back on topic... "HAH" is something I picked up from another message board that I wanted to try. Not just "Ha" but "HAH!"

Jasmine U. (Jasmine U.), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I start it as a joke then can't stop. Sweet! Bitchin! FUCKIN A! I say all these things, yo

My brother does this too, which is how "mofo", "Word--?!" and a whole bunch of things got added to his daily lexicon.

Jasmine U. (Jasmine U.), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If I try to consciously work something into my vocab, it always every time fails miserably; like when I tried to start calling people/things "gobshite" a few months back...I just got on everyone's nerves.

Lately I've been using the "_____ shockah!" in conversation unconsciously, and usually only realize what I've done when everyone stares at me like "whaa?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you're talking to us, of course.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

did I pick up "wa-hey" here?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

word

kephm, Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I accidentally use ILX slang IRL all the time. My b/f quite liked 'fux0r' though.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I keep saying "shockah" a lot, though I seem to think I may have done it pre-ILX, but I can't remember where I got it from.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 31 July 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Grim seems to be a recent addition..

Tessa Walsh (te55ssa), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

:) I say "yo" ALL the time, I can't even recall how long ago it started.. as well as "dude," "wicked" (even before moving to New England belive it or not).. And "bitchin." Bitchin is a great word.

Who started saying "ruin"? That word has suffered much from overuse among my friends in the past year or so. as an exclamation mostly. "RUIN!"

Also have a bad habit of saying putain! and merde! a lot.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I say "you lie like a kite" all the time, and the second or third time I used it offline, it took me forever to remember where I got it.

As far as how, in general ... I don't know. Something sounds cool, I use it. I say something often enough, it sticks. I resurrected "wicked" a few years back because of something I'd said about the way we used to talk when I was a kid, and my girlfriend gave me a weird look, so I started saying "wicked" all the time as a jokey thing ... which of course brought it back for good, and I haven't stopped saying it since.

At some point when I had kids, I had trained myself to say "blast" instead of "fuck, shit, cocksucker," etc. -- now that I don't have kids to worry about, it's just joined the rest, so I'll stub my toe and yell "Blasted cocksucker!"

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

We say "tis" round my way. Honest. (West Country.)

thoth (Jake Proudlock), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've noticed that, thanks to Mr Noodles, I now sometimes substitute "no problem" with "no worries".

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in Dublin a few weeks ago I was talking to a friend of my gracious host. I don't suppose she has ever heard of ILx. She expressed some entirely reasonable negative opinion about some music I liked. I frowned slightly and asked her "Do you hate fun?". She thought that very harsh.

I have adopted obv., obv.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 1 August 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

so, we've had, blud, bludd and blood. i think i've seen it in print (?!) in all three ways (nb print here includes on message boards). but i still prefer the first. 'bredrin' is not something that appeals.

i dont use any ILX type slang though.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 1 August 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

blimX0r, where to start...

ruin, obv, saying "[insert [whatever] here]" which i've noticed myself doing an awful lot recently, do you see, do you hate fun, mentalist, menko, cockfarmer, etcetcetc

my entire vocab changes every couple of years i'm sure...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 1 August 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

'do you hate fun' is still the irresistable dragon punch

it seems natural to mould myself into whoever i'm addressing. seems a little conspicuous/swag to force it tho. also i never *cough* lambasted "bludd", i'm just mildy obsessed with spellings of words that should never really be seen in print... ;) sean if you met me on road we'd get on peachy, i'm gully like the last rainforest

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

like saying riddim in front of momus

Chip Morningstar (bob), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i shall not rest till the mothertongue = wreXoRd

mark s (mark s), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like all the dumb terms I've started using (except "sweet", I hate that and I've been carrying it for like 5 years). I find myself saying "word" a lot but only cos I met someone who did and I don't want to steal it, so I try not to use it, in public anyway

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i still say 'ruude' all the time for anything thats really nicely done.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm about to go make me a ruude sandwich

stevem (blueski), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tongue?

Tim (Tim), Friday, 1 August 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You're all trifling
