AIM: Classic or Dud?

Dud I say, because for the past week or so it has been telling me that my password is invalid. It's been the same for about 3 years, and I didn't change it, so wtf? I would really hate to have to get a new screename and start over because then you have to look up everyone on your cockfarming "buddy list" again. But what do you all think?

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't AIM stand for American Indian Movement, as in Leonard Peltier and John Trudell?

Classic.

christopher, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like ICQ. It works, less people have it though. Its never done me wrong. Couldn't actually comment about AIM though. Its connected to AOL and they do send me such good coasters....

Ed, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The problem with ICQ is that practically no-one uses it.

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like AIM. It's fun, it's simple, it's easy to use! No wonder it's Number One!

I tried ICQ once, but it's such a bear to use. And no snazzy handles, either - I'd be #484572948672928. Damn it, I want a pithy nickname, not a UPC code. ICQ is the Linux of chat software - more power to you if you want to deal with the hassle. AIM is an iMac. Happy, I am.

(Feel free to prove me wrong, of course.)

I lvoe AIM. YOu can have it rmember your password so you dont have that problem.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was set up to remember my password, always has been. Then one day I just got the message it was invalid. Hence wtf?

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I never use AIM anymore.

Ally, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like AIM because you can use it send files. Other than that, conversing is overrated.

michele, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm anti-AIM/ICQ these days. I realized I much prefer being able to take a bit of time to respond -- especially when things are busy and all of a sudden I get people asking me what's going on. I hate being rude and telling them to go away! You've got my e-mail address, you know where to find me. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gee, Ned, replies seem to come pretty fast from your email address though. ;)

Josh, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All depends on the time of day, my friend. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, the hours when you're awake, not at lunch, and not going to or from work. ;)

Josh, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YOU HAVE FOUND OUT MY SECRET SHAME.

What the fuck can be expected? I work at a job where I sit at a desk and there's usually nothing to do. I appreciate the free time this gives, though, so if they're willing to pay me...

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I'm not pointing any fingers or anything. Graduate students seem to have an inordinate amount of computer time, too. ;)

Josh, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Abbott, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 00:56 (seventeen years ago)

I have had some really romantic adventures with women on AIM that I would never get along with in person.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

AOL Instant Messenger developer team laid off, reports NYT

AOL is pruning employees from several of its web services, including the iconic AOL Instant Messenger. Executives at AOL have reportedly told The New York Times that the company laid off over 40 employees last Friday, and that a total of over 100 people will be eliminated over the coming weeks. So far, the cuts have mostly affected the company's West Coast US offices, particularly the Instant Messenger group. One former employee told the Times that the AIM department was "eviscerated and now only consists of support staff," and AOL has confirmed that the head of AIM products, Jason Shellen, is no longer with the company. Local news service Patch will also be scaled down.

scrapple is amish food ... it is banging, in the sense of what it does to your digestive tract.

kurwa mać (Polish for "long life") (Eisbaer), Thursday, 15 March 2012 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

That reads like a zen koan answer to the previous post.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 March 2012 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

hard to believe patch isn't paying off

mookieproof, Thursday, 15 March 2012 01:14 (fourteen years ago)

haha i love my local patch? where else will i read about justin and selena sightings at local sushi restaurants?

the kids of boris midney high (get bent), Thursday, 15 March 2012 01:26 (fourteen years ago)

haha i've had to explicitly exclude the word 'patch' from various job searches

mookieproof, Thursday, 15 March 2012 01:34 (fourteen years ago)

if you're a developer and you go to work for AOL in this day and age you have to expect that job isn't going to actually last for very long

akm, Thursday, 15 March 2012 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

I can't believe not a single mention of MODOK on this thread. AIM is classic for that if nothing else.
