hi all, still haven't been able to get connected via dsl so a quick post from my Tungsten, since I can't load the whole blackout thread, either to post or to see if anyone else from Toronto are back online. was stuck on a subway train when the power went out, but was still mostly in the station, so I got out fairly quickly. ended up walking all the way home (ow my feet), pedestrian traffic v v heavy, and because all the traffic lights were out some regular joes wer e in the middle of the major intersections directing traffic. more in another post.

who cares. Toronto sucks.

(just kidding)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 14:07 (twenty years ago) link

power was out at the sean c homestead until about 1 am, so we did something that was never possible in downtown Toronto before: watched the stars, and counted satellites and shooting stars (satellites: 6, shooting stars: 6, rematch next blackout). we did this until the moon came up and blotted out the most of the stars.

sean c via cellular, Friday, 15 August 2003 14:09 (twenty years ago) link

Sean C you my hero!

I was thinking about the "wow look at the stars!" factor, I wasn't sure if urbanites usually noticed stuff like that.

argh this thing just ate my last msg. made my way out this morning to buy catfood and was able to use my credit card tho apparently the bank machines are still not up to 100 percent esp with cross- bank interactions. there are rolling blackouts this morning but we're okay here for noe (bar the dsl cnx). there are massive lineups outside operational gas stations, causing traffic jams. there's also apparently a traffic jam inside Mayor Mel's mouth because almost nothing coherent is coming out of it.

sean c via cell again, Friday, 15 August 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, just the newser with Mayor Mel, and he's telling people not to water their lawns. WTF?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 14:25 (twenty years ago) link

just SAW the newser...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 15 August 2003 14:26 (twenty years ago) link

yeah nick, I'm actually originally a prairie kid so I miss this, and it's kinda nice to be able to see so many stars without driving for a whole day--usually the light coming from the toronto area is so intense you have to be a lonnnng ways away to be able to see the stars as clearly as we did here last night. and besides, it was a much better alternative than panicking abt the situation!

sean c via cell again, Friday, 15 August 2003 14:27 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, we're on heavy water conservation mode right now because the reservoir only holds enough water to last the city one day under normal usage, which is apparently pretty standard design. if the power is unstable there's no guarantee that the pumps will keep the water flowing, and if the reservoir bottoms out then there's no water flowing to the fire hydrants either. at that point minor fires could become major problems, because you can only refill the portable water tankers so fast.

sean c via cell again, Friday, 15 August 2003 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

one other neat thing I learned from all of this is that you're not suposed to use candles for light any more because they pose too great a fire risk, especially if you have kids or pets. (I'd have thought that animals would be frightened by an open flame) apparently you're supposed to runout NOW NOW NOW and buy a flashlight and loads of batteries, or so sayeth Mel, who is NOT (repeat NOT) working for the battery companies. arounf

cell service is spotty now too, disappeared for a bit there. Grizz disappeared last night after taling about "gettin some cool shit" so I fear he may be behind bars right now. I'm wandering down the Danforth now to get some pics, if I can.

Just got home from my nature walk, and the ISP seems to be kicking the data out again, so will cross fingers that things are fixed and not fuXed. Still conserving power and water so will be an interesting (and hot) day today, may escape to the ravines or something, to keep cool.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 15 August 2003 16:49 (twenty years ago) link

hey Sean, i'm glad you're ok!

i was at work when it happend and luckily the go trains were running so i got home ok. but the walk to union station was INSANE. we had power from about 1-9ish this morning, and then it went out again. seems to be back now (probably temporary again) but there's NO WATER AT ALL. like, not even enough to wash your hands.

Yo - what a mess! I finally got power back here at five am but could see first canadian place et al had lectricity at about 11:15 last night. The core was totally strange until then - and yeah, STARS! Like in the sky! I almost got killed trying to cross five lanes of unmoderated traffic while walking home last night, which was more fun than I can possibly describe. Talked to Noodles later on his cell - took him two hours to get back up to Eglinton West. Lots of people from work still don't have power (I guess the GTA is only at 55% or so right now) and they're saying that because it will take so long for the Pickering Nuke to get back up that it could be as long as 72 more hours until they do. Being at work today was a joke - apparently mundane bank administration is enough of an "essential service" in a state of emergency that required 100% of staff attendance, even my tenuously pregnant boss. Fuckers.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 15 August 2003 18:59 (twenty years ago) link

Any word from Dyson and Sundar? This are almost back to normal tonight down here by the lake, but I know that Noodles still has no power up where he is. I think Scott Woods is in that general area too. At least it's cooled off quite a bit in the last few hours.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 16 August 2003 01:51 (twenty years ago) link

Well I do have power and some nice beer popsicles from my attempts to keep some lukewarmish for tonight when I didnt have power, I still dont have a mouse so fuck the internet y'all, well fuck it all in a second.
Was above the Eaton Center at work when it happened and fuck was it insanse. I mean Yonge and Dundas is freaky busy during the middle of the day but it was near riot yesterday as people poured out.
I had to walk down Bay street with baseball gear cause come hell or high water we werent defaulting my baseball game, and I had no urge to walk home in rush hour traffic with no lights. Got some great pictures of the Toronto cityline with no lights from the fairy. Will try to get those off my friend for Monday provided works ok. They closed the building down since no AC and no running water so no work.
Bathurst and Eglinton somehow had power all day and TWO open banks so I cashedout a bit there in glee.
rumour is power will be cut at 12, so I dont know if I'll find out if I have a soccer tourniment in the burbs to ref or not. Can we say thats ass. I knew we could.
So some minor looting in TO but otherwise everything is normal aside from the panicing Sean mentioned above. Give it a day or two to sink in, whne allthe meat and frigables get chucked. Popeyes chicken down teh street were willing to take a check they were so desperate to sell their chicken before it went bad.
Sadly my beer store is fucking closed. As is the Liquor store at the Loblaws. bye bye for now.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:16 (twenty years ago) link

yo, walking home, many sprinklers were indeed on. Suppose it was all the automatic ones from them rich folk along Avenue but still, now I have the fear that I'll have to stalk up on water.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 16 August 2003 02:34 (twenty years ago) link

Closed beer stores are ass, too. The grebtest things about your posts, Noodles, are that I'm now envisioning you creeping up on a glass of water, and The Light Fairy.

Noodley Dude, Spellcheck just called and wants to be your Frieeeeeend. Unfortunately the only suggestion it gived for "frigables" is friable, and I don't even know what that means so you're on your own. ;)

You got back up there pretty fast though - that's good news. Have fun sucking on that beer!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 16 August 2003 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, hey, we got power back around 2 pm yesterday. Was sort of a party, heh. The stars were nice, yeah. Unfortunately it means Radiohead got cancelled/postponed + I had to reschedule a trip/meeting in Hamilton.

It's also my parents' 26th wedding anniversary! 'Course, they've been separated since I was 8...

I spent the blackout first on a bus (from 400 & Steeles to Yonge & Finch) and then in a bar with my Dad, drinking a pitcher with the $15 or so we had in cash. Then we had a barbecue in the backyard. Good times! I wish we could have one day off (forcibly - none of this opt-in hippie shit!) where everyone had to exist without power again. Except those who need power to live (respirators, etc.)

I'm kinda bummed I missed the blackout. I'm a Toronto native but was living in London at the time and was jealous hearing all the stories of walking down dark streets looking at stars, beers on candlelit patios, etc.

Mind you London had a big blackout shortly thereafter and I was stuck on the Piccadilly Line tube during rush hour which was not fun at all I can tell you.

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i like bloor west! helps if you speak a little ukrainian of course ;)
parkdale is great although the constant name-checking of the area in association with the new hipsterdom/queen-west-west-west gentrification is somewhat annoying. i'm closer to roncesvalles anyway...

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:14 (fifteen years ago) link

It's sunny again at Yonge and Sheppard.

"I'm kinda bummed I missed the blackout. I'm a Toronto native but was living in London at the time and was jealous hearing all the stories of walking down dark streets looking at stars, beers on candlelit patios, etc."

I have exactly the same story, and I feel the same way, for the same reasons. Just replace London with Nagoya, Japan.

"but I used to live in Bloor west village! Loved it there so much."

I recently moved to High Park, and I'd heard that Bloor West village was a pretentious little suburb on the edge of Etobicoke. Wrong! It's great. I'm actually finding less and less reason to go downtown anymore.

"parkdale is great although the constant name-checking of the area in association with the new hipsterdom/queen-west-west-west gentrification is somewhat annoying."

I read an article recently which named "Bloordale", the section of Bloor from Ossington to Lansdowne as the next target for gentrification. Has the Junction's moment already passed? What about Leslieville? I can't keep up anymore.

I was a Jane street girl for two lovely years. I moved away to move in with my boyfriend and my neighbourhood of the last 2 years (Forest Hill) sucks because I don't have any money, a car, or kids to drop off at expensive lessons. There are no bars around here! I can't believe I live in an area that isn't walking distance from a pub of some sort.

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I really like that black and yellow breakfast place at King/Queen and Roncy. Good stuff and awesome decor!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the Junction is still plodding along, last time I went there I saw a lot more hipsters and condo developments.. Lansdowne though, that's interesting! I think that's got to be one of the most depressing streets in Toronto. I used to have to stand on the street at Queen & Lansdowne as part of my job (not a hooker) and it was terrible.

I thought this thread revival would be about the explosion, which for better or worse I was out of town for. Although I'm told my house at bathurst and sheppard indeed shook.

5 years, eh. How long did it take for people to forget about it and go back to blasting their AC at 20 degrees.

mehlt, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

"There are no bars around here! I can't believe I live in an area that isn't walking distance from a pub of some sort."

That factored heavily into my decision about where to live. The park was a big draw, but I didn't want to live in a place where I couldn't walk to get a drink or a bite to eat. I know some people living in those condos down by the SKYDOME (screw you Ted Rogers) and there's nothing there. I'd go insane.

"my neighbourhood of the last 2 years (Forest Hill) sucks because I don't have any money, a car, or kids to drop off at expensive lessons.'

My dad used to live there, as a much younger man. Picture it being 1966, and my father, a recently arrived immigrant from Barbados being probably the only black person at Forest Hill C.I., which was then very rich and jewish. He still has his class ring.

j-rock, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Apparently there are more Torontonians than I realized on ILX these days.

Casuistry, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

black and yellow place is the Easy - although i've had mixed experiences there and it is a bit pricier than other good brunch places in the west end (soooo many!)

i haven't heard anything about this 'bloordale' thing - that stretch still seems kinda awkward. i used to take the lansdowne bus every day at my last job, which was indeed depressing. the city re-paved the section from bloor to dundas ignoring the relatively big protest (signs on every lawn complaining about the lack of parking, etc).

queen and lansdowne is not a good place to stay stationary for a long stretch of time...

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

i was surprised there was no thread about the explosion since there do indeed seem to be a few torontonians kicking around (although i haven't posted regularly here in ages...)

j-rock, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I kinda lived in the Junction for a while last year and I think it is going through the requisite neighbourhood 'upgrades', but for the most part it escapes the panopticon Toronto media focus. I like it there! Although there is a distinct lack of good hangouts aside from the Axis. There was briefly a cool little bar called the Buzz, but it closed due to some weird owner issues - certainly not lack of popularity. I see there is a new organic supermarket and cafe in the Junction too.

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

So true. A few years ago, I would have probably said I'd never want to venture west of Dufferin on Queen. Now I barely ever go EAST of Dufferin! The Rhino is about as close as I get these days ;)

I had just got back from summer camp (lol) and was sitting on my bed after a shower, listening to Slowdive and waiting to go to the to-be-postponed Radiohead concert. I remember I was looking in the mirror across from my bed when all of a sudden the music stopped. Then I went skateboarding in the plaza by my house, where many people were hectically stocking up on water, ice cream was allegedly being given away, and pizza pizza (owning as gas-powered over as they did) was doing steady business.

Any of you without power? I was this morning (with two huge branches on top of my shed out back--don't want to venture too close, but I don't think there's any damage), got out of the house for the day, got back 30 minutes ago and it's back on. I was resigned to spending the night in a nearby motel (there was power from the Queensway north when I left this morning) but happily won't have to. As long as my neighbour's ridiculously humungous tree doesn't crash down on my roof, everything looks to be okay.

clemenza, Monday, 23 December 2013 02:01 (ten years ago) link

No power issues here, yet, but a block north of us there's a significant swath of powerlessness (just east of Christie Pits).

Have similar feelings about _our_ neighbour's humungous tree, which leans over our house, covered in ice. As more ice accumulates and (we're told) the wind will be picking up overnight.

Good luck!

pauls00, Monday, 23 December 2013 03:10 (ten years ago) link

You too. As soon as all this clears up, I've vowed to do something I should have done long ago--see if I have any legal standing to get them to cut down this tree. (I've dropped hints.) If it ever does come down on my house, I have a feeling I wouldn't see any insurance money from either their end or mine.

unexpectedly, it looks like all the ice encasings have gone from the trees overnight, at least around here. Hoping power's been restored to at least some of you folks, it looks cold out there.

East End looks like it's getting the worst of this: http://www.torontohydro.com/sites/electricsystem/PowerOutages/Pages/OutageMap.aspx

Power came back on while I was at work this evening! I went to a friends house to shower this afternoon, it felt amazing after two mornings without showers. Apartment is still cold, but oven is on full blast to kickstart it.
