Last time I went to Waterstone's, my eyes couldn't leave this monstrosity:

Lynda Lee-Potter blurb? Hot damn, it's gotta be good!

And, to make it worse.... Bryony Hill. Bryony HILL. A book involving football. Take a wild stab in the dark who her father is.

Yep, Jimmy Hill's daughter writes ChickLit. It ain't safe no more...

I have a theory on this kind of thing. I'll ask the Pinefox to verbalise it for me one of these days.

All novels of that type have covers like that. I suppose one day they will come to be seen as exquisitely beautiful objects but right now they seem awful. I also don't like that kind of slightly greasy feeling matt card that a lot of book covers have now. I remember buying my mother some reprinted paperback Patrick Leigh-Fermor books around ten years ago. I think that series were among the first I'd come across with covers made out of that kind of card and they seemed lovely but almost everything has it now. It seems so tacky.

Oh my god! I read this book out by the water over the long weekend. It's brilliant! Like Bridget Jones with headbutts.

Weirdly, I was reading Patrick Leigh Fermour at the weekend; the one where he walks from Rotterdam into Germany just as the war is begining to go bang.

How old is your mother, David?

Penguin, purveyors of quality literature, selling the autobiography of the woman who invented" the Brazilian waxing

Not only dermatologists hate her (James Morrison), Saturday, 25 February 2012 06:16 (twelve years ago) link

I think quality literature accounts for about 2% of revenue at the moment.

I'll keep an eye out for sample copies if anyone wants to read the chapter on 'revirginising yourself' in full.

1.0 out of 5 stars an opportunity lost 15 Nov 2012

Don't buy this book if you are a fan of the big hairy cornflake - or 'big hairy corn FAKE' as I now call him - because it will shatter your illusions and break your tiny heart.

As a lifelong fan myself, I spent THREE of my hard(ish) earned pounds on this wretched travesty, and was appalled to find it was just a book of crappy photos, with no modern feminist theory WHATSOEVER.

I can't believe my once favourite polemic-purveying pubehead has sold out like this. Where are his legendary tracts about the intrinsic misogyny of the media? Where are those rousing diatribes against the abuses of perceived power he witnessed at Radio 1 in the 70s? Where is my hairy hero? WHERE?

It's almost as if this once modest intellectual giant has completely abandoned his one-man war on mediocrity; chauvinism; exploitation of the impressionable; vanity; humourlessness; going grey naturally and sexual assualt, in favour of vapidity and crummy pap snaps.

What next? Will Davidson quit his column in The Socialist Worker? Will Starr turn to drink and try to disguise his bloated carcass with vertically-lined shirts? Will Davro begin doing corporate gigs for THE MAN?

Oh, life. How many ways can you break my heart?

More for the quotes than the cover design.

Also the fact it was written by Felix Dennis.

Here's the storify, of a lovely ladify (Phil D.), Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:34 (ten years ago) link

for 'work-related' reasons (honest guv) i had to attend an evening of the great man reading aloud his dire doggeral (most of it on tree-related themes.) he gets ppl to attend these events by dishing out unlimited quantities of decentish plonk, so our table was pretty pished by the end of the evening, but we were all under strict instructions NOT TO LAUGH in inappropriate places, so I spent the whole time biting my knuckles and avoiding eye contact w/ the others - just excrutiating.

Is there a thread for rip-off self published amazon books? The same author also has this which appears to be literally nothing but the titles of tv shows listed in alphabetical order
