What the hell is this crap? Friendster is the dumbest thing ive ever heard of, but it seems you hipsters eat that shit up. What complete horse shit.

antifriendster, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"you hipsters"

petrochemical arms (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I didnt stutter.

antifriendster, Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you not heard - it's hip to be square.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Friendly Hipster = Friendster!

and you must be an unfriendly hipster. Shame on ya.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 September 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"I didn't stutter"? Worst comeback ever

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it really only works if you're responding to "what did you say?" and even then you should respond with "do. I. stutter?" and be Judd Nelson.

To be fair, I don't think this guy would be on Friendster.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

seen any of his recent movies lately?

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 11 September 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I speak of the character, not the man who played him.

rainy (rainy), Thursday, 11 September 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
what is it with the image loading on Friendster? everything is so slow - it causes some problem in Explorer that stops images being loaded on all other websites after having used it too. bizarro.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

do people still use friendster?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

nope, just me

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i do but it seems my friends are using myspace more now.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

friendster was a moment in time and now that is gone.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

is that why the photos don't load?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yup.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for clarifying!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

no problem dude!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

and a happy new year to you all. take care now.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the photos load just fine for me. i still use it almost everyday for mail and the like.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 28 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

that photo thing is a definite mystery and I'm glad someone else is experiencing it as well. I think it's a bug in IE for windows that has something to do with http requests (I read something about IE expecting to be requesting shit from a windows server and if it finds some other kind of server, like apache, it has to make some kind of adjustment, and this can cause problems. Lame!).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 28 December 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but it only happens with Friendster - loads of sites run on Apache and Linux servers!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 December 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having that image problem too, which is sort of good - I thought my laptop was going haywire again.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 28 December 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i must be bored, i just signed up to this piece of school-yearbook-signing-day-are-you-my-friend-clique-mongering. sigh. friendster [at] petrajane.com, if anyone still cares...

petra jane (petra jane), Sunday, 28 December 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

'When it comes to arranging face to face meetings, Friendster has a Goldilocks problem. Some user clusters are too big (your personal network). Some user clusters are too small (Private Messages). No user clusters are just right, because even the users on your friend list must be contacted via one-on-one private messages. Providing ways for users to cluster and communicate around topics of interest or affiliations would be a more organic way to facilitate face-to-face meetings. If the purpose is to foster real-world friendships, convening a group to meet in real life is paradoxically easier (provided that no one particular member must be present) than arranging a one-on-one meeting. Groups provide safety in numbers, as well as a meta-agenda that takes the social pressure off any two given individuals. While Friendster will no doubt birth some friendship success stories (serendipity is like that), its functionality seems far better suited to a dating service than to a friend service.'

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 28 December 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

We were chatting about the image problem on some other thread, can't remember what one it was, but yes, Friendster breaks IE's ability to load any kind of images at all from ANY site, until you shut down IE completely and then restart the browser. That's half the reason I've pretty much abandoned my account there; the other half is that all of the people I have ever sent messages to saying "hey" because they seem interesting either ignore me outright or send me back a snotty message saying "what the fuck do you want?" So screw it.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 28 December 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Re Momus's post, I met someone one-on-one from Friendster the other night.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 28 December 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

tribe.net is way better.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 28 December 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had love, drama and heartache IRL from Friendster. And I just had the hottest one night stand of my life due indirectly to Friendster!

RE: Momus' post. a. bulletin board messages, b. "group" friendsters like 'Austin Parties'. Problem sovled.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 28 December 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think the novelty of receiving lascivious messages from goths in Ohio would wear off as quickly as it has.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 28 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

If you've moved around a lot, as I have, and have changed jobs/ email addresses a bunch in the last decade, then Friendster is just a rad way to reconnect with old pals. I could give a fuck if "its moment has passed" or whatever -- I just used it to hook up with some pals in Portland over X-mas!

There's also a sort of Fischer Price aspect to it that I'd love if it actually worked properly -- ohhhh, I'll click on Johnny's face to send Johnny an email -- that part of it is, I think, fucking brilliant.

yetimike (McGonigal), Sunday, 28 December 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

im still on friendzer i miss you ilx!!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Sunday, 28 December 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

RE: Momus' post. a. bulletin board messages, b. "group" friendsters like 'Austin Parties'. Problem solved.

There are both true, but I keep thinking that what they should be doing is not deleting fake profiles (Austin Parties dead now, btw) but keeping them as a separate type of network. Either that or bring their search engine up to 1997-level sophistication. These thoughts were caused by trying to find people that like Grant Morrison, and ending up with a lot of Toni and Jim.

This is mostly a moot point - it's only the fact that it's been functional for two consecutive hours that causes me to think about it at all.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
Ok so I'm on friendster and it seems actually useful for the keeping up with friends thing since I don't think they're myspace users or anything.

But what I wanna know is has anyone used this thing as a like way to actually meet people, or is that just like k-awkward?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 16 August 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have!

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 16 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Happened a few times with me, and others have mentioned its powers for good there too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't so much met new people as reconnected with old ones.

But Friendster is so 2003, dude.

jaymc, Monday, 16 August 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I've reconnected with old people that now, once again, I no longer call or write. Thanks, Friendster!

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So, what's the Friendster of 2004 and beyond?

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's called "email." Supposed to be the next big thing.

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

gmail

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Which I don't have yet. I'm starting to feel uncool, and we can't have that.

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My buddy list seems to slowly crumble over time. I should write better testimonials.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan, sorry I don't have any more invites!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah friendster is useless now. i think someone did a study predicting and explaining its inevitable downfall.

amateur!!!st, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

friendster is useless now that sorority girls have taken it over

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate Friendster. My assistant at work is addicted and it affects her performance. It's a freakin' cult.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

every third person walking down k rd is on it, which makes it useful for keeping up with parties/gallery openings/gigs. & noo zullunders lack the uh american-ness that'd allow them to use it for any hooking-up purposes, which is a nice de-creep-ifier.

etc, Monday, 16 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ok whoa so i check friendster and there's this advertisement against relationship abuse and stuff except the "abuse" is... get this... the boyfriend calls her like a WHOLE lot!

omg a posessive boyfriend who calls a lot -- call the cops!

wtf?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sterling you're creeping me out.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

for serious this is like the weirdest add I've ever seen. Its all just about how this boy calls a whole bunch and its like "abuse doesn't have to be physical" and its not like it even says he calls her bad names or anything... he just calls!

i'm really confused.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

well unless you're calling a lot, why care?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Its just weird. I told my friend and she said she saw another that said "lying is a form of violence."

i mean its like clingy guys who dissemble (= most people I know?) vs. actual abuse!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, it's like mental violence.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

EMO VIOLENCE

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen that commercial. unless i'm totally misreading things, the boyfriend is being angry/verbally abusive on the phone, telling the girl she can't go out, agressively interrogating her as to what she's doing every minute, etc.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Do those ads have race / class implications

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()LA(Z)E(R)()()()((L)()()(A)(S(E)R()()()) (ex machina, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if you're going to look for them, i guess. iirc the girl in the ad is latina (class is pretty unspecified), but i think it's a stretch to draw the line further.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

stop harrassment of middle-class latinas by emo fundies now!

amateur!!!st, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

This wasn't a tv ad.. just the text and a picture of a person in a print/web thing.

Also there are creepy ones at my train station where they're about real abuse but the guys are all rilly dark skinned and the girls are all rilly light skinned.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of creepy ads in the train, have you seen the one that has a picture of a bunch of happy, marching people carrying rainbow flags with the caption that says "gay pride 1995" and then a picture of a guy in his underwear smoking meth and looking at gay porn online (with a thing of hand lotion on the desk) with the caption "gay pride 2005"? wtf!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yikes!

is the guy cute?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno. i'm not sure if you can see his face. he has nice abs, though. i don't think he's podgy enough for you.

four months pass...
a year and a half late - sounds about right for me

i joined as a celebrity ages and ages ago just to see what it was like. i didn't spend much time failing to figure it out, and have ignored it ever since. and then the celebrity got a friend request from a college friend of mine who had never heard of the celebrity. i can't explain this.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Friendster pisses me off. How is it that they still haven't been able to fix the message notification function? It's said I have a message waiting for 2 weeks now but there's nothing there. Of course, being a total ocd freak I still click on the link to see that I don't actually have a message every single time I go on there (about 20 times a day).

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of creepy ads in the train, have you seen the one that has a picture of a bunch of happy, marching people carrying rainbow flags with the caption that says "gay pride 1995" and then a picture of a guy in his underwear smoking meth and looking at gay porn online (with a thing of hand lotion on the desk) with the caption "gay pride 2005"? wtf!

ha! i finally saw this at a busstop in chelsea. i pointed, gasped, then keeled over in laughter - and a gay couple passing by gave me a dirty look

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Please tell me that's a Jergen's ad.

I got a friend to send me a message and it cleared off the fake notification. Groan.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually started my own fan club on myspace (not friendster, sorry).

It's pretty popular, it had 19 members in the first day.

I win at the internet.
