Cheap flights w/in Europe

The Europe that does not include the UK, naturally.

I need to get from Paris to Venice and back cheaply, in October. Ryan Air and Easy Jet will only take me from Paris to somewhere in the UK, although people persist in recommending them to me (!!).

So far the cheapest I can find are around $250 round trip either Alitalia or Air France. That seems pricey to me.

Any suggestions?

I might take the train but I need to pick up a shuttle from the Venice airport (Marco Polo) and don't know how easy it is to get from the train station to the airport. Anyone know? (Also I find the train schedules and prices very confusing.)

I don't know much about continental Europe-continental Europe flight operators. I get the impression they aren't as cheap as ones involving the UK or Ireland. Venice is quite an expensive airport to fly into, I would have thought.

For non-budget operators, try expedia or deckchair.com, if you haven't already.

Try europebyair.com - they deal in $99 oneway flight segments within Europe. Most of them are short-haul, but some of the routes seem like good deals. The closest to Venice you can get to Paris is Zagreb though. Or Venice to Brussels. So maybe its not so useful on this particular trip, but maybe sometime later, I guess.

I might just have to suck it up and spend $250 on an Ailitalia flight. Blech.

It turns out the Venice airport is nine miles from the train station. And as far as I can tell, the cheapest one-way train ticket is $110. That's not much less than the plane, and it takes 14 hours each way (!!). So it doesn't seem like the train is worth it in this case.

Oh well, I'm going to London in November and hopefully I can get there for very cheap to make up for this.

amateurist, why do you need to pick up a shuttle at the airport? The train takes you straight into Venice; from their you get a boat to whichever part of Venice you're staying. Or are you staying outside Venice? If so, you can gte off the train at Mestre.

$250 could be worse, to be honest. Though I do agree that $220 and 14 hours is a bit much too.

If you need any specific Venetian help (other than hotels, I'm not much good on hotels) or translation, email me - it's my dad's hometown, I've been there a good 30 times. It's fucking awesome and I'm not just biased :)

I'm going from Paris to Venice myself in January, so I've been doing some investigating. EasyJet will take you from Paris Orly to Milan for pretty damn cheap (30-40 Euros). From there, take the train to Venice, which takes a litttle less than 3 hours. I'm not sure of train prices, but from what I've heard, Italian trains are relatively inexpensive.

hmmm the Milan flight sounds interesting. I need to end up in a town called Sacile, which I believe I can get to by train from either Venice or Milan.

the shuttle I was speaking of takes me from Venice-Marco Polo to Sacile (for free). flying in and taking the shuttle would be less hassle and I wouldn't have to worry about not knowing a word of Italian. but if it saves a lot of money the flying to Milan/train to Sacile thing sounds OK. I'll probably spend a few days in Venice when I return from Sacile, so I might ask for some sightseeing advice.

some strangeness. the travel agent i spoke to mentioned that on her computer, flights by a company called "corseair international" (note spelling) were $110 round trip but that she couldn't book through them. i looked them up on the web and although there are mentions of a "corseair international" airline on various pages, i couldn't find an active website. i did however find a website for "corsair" (note spelling) airlines, a french company. they do fly to venice (they only have about 10 stops in total). but it's like 450 euros (yikes!). i wonder if that is the same thing as "corseair international" and if so, why did it say $110 on her computer?

i find airline stuff very confusing.

no wait, now i see that on the "corsair" website, round trip paris/venice is about $230. not enough difference from the alitalia flight i've booked to bother.

Incidentally (although I don't think they cover norwegian.no) skyscanner.net is a great site that aggregates budget airline flights.

I'll have to keep that in mind -- currently on this trip I've used EasyJet, RyanAir and Transavia (in two days).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 July 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I heard about this...Are there going to by flights by September? It's been an age since I hooked up w/ my Bergen crew.

cheap air travel is causing global warming. You should pay up in order to feel better about yourself.
