hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i am for it obv

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you mean INTRAband sex, like within the membership, not all the members of one band having sex with all the members of another band?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what about contraband sex?

smoky topaz (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

like with Cuban cigars?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"...featuring Bill Clinton on the saxaphone!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yep i mean intraband sex . does it ruin the dynamic?
what if it all goes horribly wrong and destroys the band?
what if it goes really well and the power balance shifts?
what if we all end up hating eachother over some harmless and friendly fucking?

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The answer is MORE FUCKING.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

if you all end up hating each other then you can have sex with black sabbath!

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

you'll get to play at the inaugural ball...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

win win!

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

folks im kinda serious here. ive mostly avoided this situ because of being in bands where it has all gone wrong and we all hated each other which led to the demise of that line up.

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

actually im not being all that serious but i was wondering how this has affected other musicians

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

well, is having sex with such and such a person more important to you than being in a band with everybody else?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My serious answer is that there are very few instances where I would get involved with someone I was "working" with. Since most relationships don't work out and few people are actually capable of keeping a purely physical no-strings-attached relationship on that level, odds are it will end in tears. Disassociating the relationship from the business of the band will also be problematic if both parties in the relationship aren't on the same page, by which I mean that if one person views the band relationship as completely distinct from the romantic relationship and the other does not, you're looking at a recipe for fights. Add into that the fact that other band members will view you as a voting bloc whether you are or not and it's a situation I would have serious doubts about entering.

(Fortunately I don't have to worry about this type of thing unless something deeply catastrophic happens to my marriage and, after it crumbles, I join a band with Thandie Newton. Mmmm.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

certainly not . i love being in this band and we play so nicely together . i wanna keep playing but after our last show we were all very drunk and there was some fooling around beginning to happen.

hellbaby (hellbaby), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

serious answer: dud, and a really stupid thing to do, unless you don't care about the band very much

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

although i am lucky inasmuch as the idea of sleeping with my female bandmate is about as appealing as sleeping with my siblings

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

GET IN THERE!

West Virginia (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"of course i care about you darling"

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Con: This could potentially destabilize the band and your relationships (platonic and otherwise) with its other members.
Pro: This is a good source of dirt if VH1 ever does a "Behind the Music" on your band.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevie Nicks to Thread....

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

l. if yr talkin about who i think yr talkin about, well put it this way i wouldnt hit it

duane, Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it's good to be tuned in to each others rhythmic thing on every level tho i guess

duane, Saturday, 13 September 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 14 September 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It wrecked at least one band I really loved (note: not a band I was in). On the other hand, hey, it worked for Jefferson Airplane. And the Mamas & the Papas.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 14 September 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine slept with each member of a band consecutively (it was sort of a Goldilocks thing I guess). She married the last one she slept with and they have lived happily ever after (so far at least).

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Sunday, 14 September 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

louise wener to thread

sand.y, Sunday, 14 September 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

dud. do not shit where you eat.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 14 September 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

there seems to be so much disfunctional bullshit that goes on it bands that i'm not sure this even matters.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 14 September 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

cos this band is still kinda new , there isnt much dysfunctional bullshit yet but i guess that would be one way of generating some.

hellbaby (hellbaby), Sunday, 14 September 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

but layna what happened to the band yr friens was in?

hellbaby (hellbaby), Sunday, 14 September 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, her band broke up acrimoniously, of course. But the band she married into seems to be OK.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Sunday, 14 September 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

working in a trio containing you and one couple:

"I thought we'd agreed that we'd at least try my idea once before deciding whether or not it worked.."
"We did try, and it didn't work. We tried several times actually, if you remember. It ruined our largest gig to date."
"No, I'm saying it'd work if you actually tried it and meant it instead of going in all resentful. You're being a complete asshole, by the way."
"Well I just hate it when you write off my opinion like this. We're not your backup band."
"Hey Jon, what do you think? About my idea?"

dud, except we were great, while we lasted

jl (Jon L), Sunday, 14 September 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

well, if you are healthy people who want a healthy band experience and are fairly serious, then this is leaning towards dud. unless everyone is very secure with themselves and never get jealous or act weird when things go awry. because not only with you get the usually awkwardness that comes with trying to work with something you fucked but you have to watch the fans/scenesters flirt with them (to put it mildly) to no end. even if you aren't the one involved, you have to watch your bandmates go through this. but if people are really serious or in love, then that can be a bigger deal to them than a little band they play in for fun. so as with everything, it all depends.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 14 September 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

but but but i LIKE flirting with the rocker girls!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 14 September 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

just do it, it won't make no diff to nuthin

duane, Sunday, 14 September 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

THis is why I could not really work in a band. I always want to fuck people near me. I"m just that way. I would defintely fuck up band dynamics. (i mean I have and do anyway for bands I'm not even in so. . .)

Texas, Biyatch! (thatgirl), Sunday, 14 September 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

you're certainly not alone. nothing like working closely together on music with someone to wake up nearly every emotional reflex in your body/soul. I know at least two couples very well who make it work exceptionally well, to boot, when it works it works.

jl (Jon L), Sunday, 14 September 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

seeing as how i fetishize indie rocker chicks, i agree with sam--i'd do me damnedest to hook up with them or their cute friend with the jonathan richman t-shirt and overly-large belt.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 14 September 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it could be bad for the band dynamic but also good cos think of the great songs you'll write about it!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh you know, you could just as easily write some really shitty songs about it

duane, Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i trust you tho, i'm sure it'll be all cool

duane, Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

nasty songs about other members of your band are CLASSSICCCCKKK!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(thinks : uh-oh)

duane, Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you have nothing to worry about...THAT YOU KNOW OF!!!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't the band just try holding hands first? Everything's so complicated these days.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 14 September 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

jel rocknroll is more than just holding hands

duane, Sunday, 14 September 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hey i was in king loser! for a whole year!
it was awesome.

duane, Monday, 15 September 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

being in a band with a couple is only good if they are dope addicts as well

duane, Monday, 15 September 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes dud, sometimes classic

luna (luna.c), Monday, 15 September 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

C/D? I guess it depends how frequently you're getting laid.

Girolamo Savonarola, Monday, 15 September 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"...featuring Bill Clinton on the saxaphone!"
Surely that should have read 'sexophone'?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 September 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

When Sarah and I first started going out, she inducted me into the band she was in the process of starting. We were in that band for a couple of years. I didn't think it was that much of an issue, but at one point, the bass player got all pissed at us and said that we were always ganging up to control the band and overruling him. Which wasn't true, I don't think. But we did bitch about his ways after practice.
Right now I'm in a band with a married couple, but they don't control anything. In fact, they argue with each other more than anyone else in the band. So unless it's all part of their secret plan to control the band, it's not really a problem.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 15 September 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what it's like to be James McNew.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 15 September 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Good thing I don't have any of these problems...girls don't play jazz.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Alice Coltrane and Carla Bley both beg to differ.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And look, here comes Amy Denio to kick your ass.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 15 September 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

not to mention the nonstop jazzbo-on-jazzbo action of the "free" scene which SQUARES NEVER HEAR ABOUT

jones (actual), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Playing in a band with a married couple is a fxcking drag.

earlnash, Monday, 15 September 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

and then they all jaz up.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 15 September 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come now, I know women play jazz. But apparently NOT WITH ME. And the only woman in the free scene around here used to be a man.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

QED

jones (actual), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(not that I found that out first hand, jones. er.)

Dada, Monday, 15 September 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess it depends how frequently you're getting laid.

Well, sure. Tis hard to be part of a 5 member band, where there are 2 couples. Imagine the noises you would be trying to block out on the bus.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 15 September 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The persistent rattle of poorly secured cymbals?

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 15 September 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bonus points for naming the c and v stand for.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Conduction and valence.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

NOOOO! I THOUGHT I'D LIKE SEMICONDUCTORS ALL BEHIND!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

can we talk about interband sex now? that sounds more interesting.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

duane? what band would we like to root?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Please pick us please pick us please pick us...

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

in duane's absence, i have chosen a winner. its... the minor thirds!!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Better do it quick, or at least before Chris and I tour together in November. I'm icky!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah yeah lets talk about interband sex now, ....
who is going to go first?

hellbaby (hellbaby), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

the more the merrier (thats to bryan too).

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah and I are in different bands now. And for a long time, the bass player in my band and the drummer in her band were a couple, but then they had a nasty breakup and we couldn't play shows together for a while. So that was kind of lame.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What if you're a solo artist? Surely a dud.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Interband sex is by definition classic if your a solo artist! Intraband sex would be somewhat less so.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

That's debatable.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, for example, I'm really hot.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm always having intraband sex with my solo project.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

its pretty good.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but not as good as that night we "double billed", eh?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. this proves that interband sex is inherently better than intraband sex.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

what about contraband sex?

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh my favourtite!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Prude (Prude), Friday, 9 April 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

how did I miss this thread? Oh right, I was in Spain. Anyway, super-fucking-dud. Can sometimes be worse for the non-participants than the participants (cf. last summer).
