"intimidating"

People throw this word around willy-nilly, i have noticed. What does the word "intimidating" mean to you?

I wonder, cos I always thought it meant formidable. But it doesn't. I have been called intimidating a few times, and the people who say it always try to get with me. IF I'M SO INTIMIDATING, WHY AREN'T YOU COWERING LIKE THE WORM YOU ARE???

sorry for starting another thread about *mememe*, but i can't imagine anything more unappealing than thinking right now.

n. called me "intimidating" the other day, but i think it was a half-assed insult more than anything. i really don't know what he meant though.

(Nervously) Sheesh Ms Lurex! We're doing our best! Why you gotta bully us all the time? No, no, don't hit me!!!!

Is it because you're tall? Or do you have a big voice? My girlfriend has this problem. Women are supposed to be tiny and have high soft wittle gurlie voices teeheehhee!!!

I know a couple few tiny girls with "high soft wittle gurlie voices" who are intimidating as fuck. Maybe it's just how overwhelmingly confident they are in that their universe trumps those of all others around them and fuck you if you're not ready to go along with it.

I'm intimidated by almost everyone for a huge variety of reasons so I'm not the best judge of this though.

I've been called intimidating by guys who could easily have kicked my ass, so it occasionally pays off to be tall, gronky, and to sometimes have a menacing scowl. I'm generally not intimidated by people.

i'm short. i have a big voice. i suppose i have something of a Presence.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 15 September 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I do think its Presence. A kind of aura, or perhaps an intelligence that seems very overpowering, leaving one thinking "I'm not as clever/cool/quickwitted as this person, they'll shred me!" I used to think that about a few people, but as I got to know them, it seemed silly. I'm always more intimidated by people I dont know, when I misread their facial expressions and body language as being haughty for want of a better phrase.

People call me intimidating without ever having talked to me.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 15 September 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

argh! stop intimidating me!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 15 September 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

di i'm not scared of you

duane, Monday, 15 September 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

these people clearly don't MEAN that i'm intimidating. if i was really intimidating, they would leave me alone, right?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno man, yr tellin the story

duane, Monday, 15 September 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i guess they think it's more of a challenge, perhaps.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"you're intimidating" tends to = "I'm a fence-sitting wussbag" or "you speak in complete sentences omg" most of the time, so don't worry about it too much Lurex.

in other news, do yourself a favor and don't ever move to the American west coast. trust me on this one.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

young people are intimidating. old people are sad. very young people are cute (as a button).

youn, Monday, 15 September 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of people say a friend of mine is intimidating. I think it was because she was tall, beautiful & wouldn't take any shit!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Di, it's not you, it's just that all Leo women are born with dicks and men are frightened by them.

I think it's interesting that I hear this adjective more often used to describe assertive women than men, perhaps becausethere's already an unspoken cultural assumption that men are supposed to "intimidate."

Vic, Monday, 15 September 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

If a man is referred to as 'intimidating' it's quite a bad thing. For a man to intimidate a woman it generally means that she is scared of him for one reason or another.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 September 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm finding this gathering of people incredibly threatening.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 15 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
i like to intimidate men by telling them i'm a sweet fagg0t and telling them i want them. I love the taste of sweet @..
