Buying things cos you're bored, c or d

Today I took 100 euro out of my bank account and drove to the supermarket, I looked around for an hour and then got hold of myself and realised I was only buying cos I was bored and hadn't talked to anyone all day really.

I then thought about taking up some kind of physical hobby.

Do you do this? It's quite a horrible feeling.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I spent $75 on comic books on Saturday cuz I was bored.
I think my record buying habits stems from that too. Y'know, go down to the record store, shoot the shit with the other nerds. Walk away with $50 worth of stuff you'll listen to maybe twice before filing away.

I'm so sad and lonely.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 15 September 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh yeah I hear you. I would normally buy the stuff too, except I realised that the Lord of the Rings Two Towers DVD wasn't going to make me happier really.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I go grocery shopping for no reason all the time. I almost got out of bed and showered today just so I could go over to the Safeway and get some salad cream which I know I will never use. I throw a fair amount of food out because of this bad habit.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't want to stereotype you, but have you thought of any particular one? Has to be fun (to keep your interest) and cheap (so you don't spend more than you say you do).

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My problem is more eating things because I'm bored. Especially because my job is boring.

I want this shirt but I don't like any of the colors it comes in. Also it is $50 and that's just ridiculous.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Alternate thread title: American suburbs, c or d?

oops (Oops), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oops OTM. I sometimes go in stores when I'm really bored (really more sick of being inside than bored, I suppose; wtf, I just go and be inside somewhere else) but usually I get disgusted with consumerism and leave without buying anything.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

unless Neiman-Marcus is having a sale.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i buy stuff coz i'm bored all the time

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to eat lunch at a the grocery store on work days so that I can then peruse the aisles and buy a little something. I rationalize that it is something I really do need - ie: healthy foods to keep at work, kitty litter, q-tips - but I know it's just cuz I like spending the mula.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 15 September 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the cause of my music and movie collection. I don't feel like hanging out with anyone, but I don't want to sit around and watch TV, hey, I'll go see if I can find on vinyl!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 15 September 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Most music critics say that, Milo

However, I know I would buy stuff out of boredom, if I could. Why, there ARE grey clouds for poverty! (I'd say silver, but who would I be kidding?)

The purchase regret alleviates the boredom at least.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 15 September 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

But then, in the next two seconds, you start to worry about paying the bill

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 15 September 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace OTM upthread.. 90pc of my music purchases are really just ways to pass the time... Stuff that will get two spins and then join the 'to-explore-further' pile.
Also, most electronic appliances (digicam, portable MD, polaroid, etc.) are just the result of whimsical urges I assign myself on empty week-ends.
L7..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah definitely, all of the time.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, most of my music gets two listens and then retires, but I buy it in good faith hoping it'll rock my world, and that's what's important, right? And also even if I don't like it, I can sometimes think of a friend that would love it.

Eating because I'm bored + company keeps full sweets cupboard => trouble ahead (and behind).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the only way to shop.

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but lately I'm loaded and had a massive crash comedown when I realised I didn't want anything yesterday

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I despair for people who buy things because they are bored. They are buying into the number one myth of a capitalist society. Money does not buy you happiness, and indescriminate purchasing also reduces the intrinsic value of any good stuff you would buy.

Would you get the same thrill getting books out of the library.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes :(

David. (Cozen), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete you are totally on the money, of course. This was the source of my eventual despair. Sometimes I can feel the money, and the commodities, gnawing at my brain.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan, buy me an iPod

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I should buy me one instead. I want decks but they are beyond my loadedness. Or at least if I got them I would be broke all year.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

well, buying (esp. music) is a bit like other casual narcs.
Young and bored, you start off buying in small amounts and the momentary pleasure the CDs (or whatever) give you, trick you into thinking that they are indeed valid substitutes for real life. Progressively they turn into mere boredom-killers, but as the boredom grows, so does yr buying sprees, and naturally the effect of those purchases eventually decreases, prompting you to buy even more for diminishing returns..

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

'Bored' is one thing I don't understand, except at work obv. What has always bothered me is that I never have enough time to get on with all the millions of things I've half-finished or got lined up to do. I haven't much sympathy for people being 'bored' really.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, a thread for people complaining about being bored might not be the best place to admit that.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

alcohol kills boredom dead

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Alcohol is like boredom in a bottle. Unless it comes in a can. Or a pint glass. i use it to dull my otherwise unstoppable creative urges.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm reasonably sure I was more creative when I was a total pisshead. I haven't had a mildly imaginative thought for aeons...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Latest ILX put-down:
"You make me want to buy things."
or perhaps:
"This thread makes me want to go shopping."

Go at it!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love doing that, but I cannot right now. I am currently working off of the money my parents gave me for necessities this semester because my campus job hasn't started yet (I am beginning to worry in fact as I haven't had word), so I feel quite guilty spending anything. I don't see why spending money isn't just fun in general as long as you can pay for stuff, doing that when you're bored is probably no less pathetic than anything besides making great art or something.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i buy video games.

or guitar pedals.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had a couple of really good months, financially, and I find myself wanting to buy more and more things, because I still feel empty inside even though my career is doing well, and I always thought that if I was doing well in my career, I would be happy and satisfied.
But I'm just sad. Maybe I should have a baby. Actually, I should probably get a dog. But then I'd need to move to a house.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Shopping bored > shopping stoned. Like I need that many things that glow under black lights...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
I started scrap booking for a while which helped for a while but then I just found myself shopping for scapbooking items.

sandra, Sunday, 1 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

scrapbooking?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 1 February 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I like buying things... not because I really need them but just because I need to fill the voids of my empty, squalid life at times (oftentimes, that is)
