Channel 4 are having another of their tedious "Top 100" things, and this time it's supposedly the worst pop singles (it says "greatest" in the URL but it's not that):

http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/G/greatest/pop_records/vote.jsp

So many obvious choices. Most of it's novelty records! Why don't they nominate people who actually deserve it, like the Stereophonics or Coldplay or the Lighthouse Family or whoever? No, they wouldn't do that, because then they'd have to formulate some original thoughts then and they wouldn't be able to rely on their tiresome "Rene & Renato!!!!11 Weren't they rubbish ?!?!?!?! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!1" non-jokes.

Also: Plastic Bertrand were great, you fuckers!

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I prefer the term 'ninja of the obvious' myself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Fat Les ? WTF ?! "Vindaloo" was brilliant !!!

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Plastic Bertrand were great
I always it was just one guy?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

At least such a programme concentrating on novelty records would be amusing and make good post-pub telly. Who in their right mind would want to sit through hours of Stereophonics and Lighthouse Family videos?

Although, if MULL OF KINTYRE isn't in there I will be writing personally to Channel 4 to complain. I heard that song on the way into work this morning and it ruined my day.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I always it was just one guy?

I think you're right, actually. I originally put "was great" but I couldn't be sure...

A good point which I suppose I have to agree with, but I doubt it'll be any good anyway, as they'll just get the same old suspects in (Vernon Kaye and that fucking Thingy Yashere person, most probably) who won't add anything actually funny or even at least insightful.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Barbie Girl was the best song that was written in the 90s!

The end bit..
"Oh Ken I'm having so much fun!!!"
"Well barbie we're just getting started"
"Oh I love you Ken!"

*swoon*

ken c, Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

there are, at least, fourteen fantastic songs on that list.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

26 fantastic songs and about another 50 good ones, oh well. 1 of the songs is a Freaky Trigger Pop Music Focus Group Winner!

There are at least 10 actually bad records on there.

I was planning to start a Sinitta vs Sabrina TS last night as it happens.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay = as obvious as milli vanilli

where is van morrison or marvin gaye or pulp on this list? that would take actual real interesting daring

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

to state the obv, obv

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

1 of the songs is a Freaky Trigger Pop Music Focus Group Winner!

Without having seen this list, I predict it is "The Thong Song." Lemme check...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep. It was.

(I remember giving it very high marks, possibly even a 10+10, if you must know.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

MacArthur Park? Wannabe? Stand By Your Man? One Night In Bangkok? WTF?!?!!?

Who chose this list?

Mind you, Matt DC is OTM - it makes for ace post pub telly, even if it does make me want to kick in the head of Gina Yashere or Kate Thornton or Sarah Cawood or whoever. I forecast a night of me shouting "WTF? My Toot Toot is an excellent pop song and miles better than chuffing Travis!!!" at the telly whilst mr ailsa sits by and shakes his head sadly. Bring it ON!

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

A rough list of the great ones:

16. CA PLANE POUR MOI - PLASTIC BERTRAND
18. CAN WE FIX IT ? - BOB THE BUILDER
20. CHEEKY SONG (TOUCH MY BUM) - THE CHEEKY GIRLS
23. CHIRPY CHIRPY CHEEP CHEEP - MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
29. DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMAS - BAND AID II
31. DOOP - DOOP
44. I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU - STEVIE WONDER
46. I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY - KYLIE MINOGUE
49. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS - FOREIGNER
79. ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK - MURRAY HEAD
101. STAND BY YOUR MAN - TAMMY WYNETTE
109. THE LADY IN RED - CHRIS DE BURGH
115. THONG SONG - SISQO
119. TOUCH ME (I WANT YOUR BODY) - SAMANTHA FOX
123. WANNABE - SPICE GIRLS

And there's a bunch more that aren't bad at all.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, so I like "One Night in Bangkok" quite a lot, and "Lady in Red", and "Shaddap Your Face" (even though I'm a Ultravox freak!), and "I Want to Know What Love Is", but I feel this is the time to admit something....

Um, I happen to quite like Kylie Minogue's "I Should Be So Lucky". Unlike her cover of "Locomotion", which I will always think of as dire. "I Should Be So Lucky", though, is fun, lighthearted, and peppy.

"I should be so lucky/Lucky, lucky, lucky/I should be so lucky in love!"

Ok, that's it. That's becoming my theme song NOW. ;)

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, wait a minute..."Band Aid II"? There was a second one?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever. It couldn't possibly be as bad as "Voices That Care."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Songs I would score at 7.5 or more in a focus group, though I can't remember what I did give some of them in actual focus groups:

(EVERYTHING I DO) I DO IT FOR YOU - BRYAN ADAMS
BARBIE GIRL - AQUA
C'EST LA VIE - B*WITCHED
CHEEKY SONG (TOUCH MY BUM) - THE CHEEKY GIRLS
DIAMOND LIGHTS - GLENN HODDLE AND CHRIS WADDLE
DIRRTY - CHRISTINA AGUILERA
DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMAS - BAND AID II
I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY - KYLIE MINOGUE
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS - FOREIGNER
I'D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE(BUT I WON'T DO THAT) - MEAT LOAF
LET'S GET READY TO RHUMBLE - PJ AND DUNCAN
PHYSICAL - OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
PUT THE NEEDLE ON IT - DANII MINOGUE
RAT RAPPING - ROLAND RAT SUPERSTAR
REMEMBER YOU'RE A WOMBLE - THE WOMBLES
SATURDAY NIGHT - WHIGFIELD
SPACEMAN - BABYLON ZOO
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - ROLF HARRIS
STAR TREKKIN' - THE FIRM
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - EUROPE (the inclusion of this song in their list make me extremely angry)
THE POWER OF LOVE - JENNIFER RUSH
WANNABE - SPICE GIRLS
WE BUILT THIS CITY - STARSHIP
WE WILL ROCK YOU - FIVE FEAT. QUEEN

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I only like these:
10. BARBIE GIRL - AQUA
16. CA PLANE POUR MOI - PLASTIC BERTRAND
44. I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU - STEVIE WONDER
48. I WANNA SEX YOU UP - COLOR ME BADD
54. ICE ICE BABY - VANILLA ICE
But due to being a Yank I haven't heard like 60% of those songs.
How could ANYONE consider Ca Plane Pour Moi a bad song? It's so good.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

God I missed loads of great ones - PJ and Duncan?

OK, who is for a kicking TVs and shouting party when this airs??

Mike you did indeed give Sisqo 10+10 and compared him to Marvin Gaye.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, mike Band Aid II was the PWL stars like Bros, Kylie, Jason Donovan, Marti Pellow, Sonia, Cliff Richard, Chris Rea and Lisa Stansfield! It is a tour de force of late '80's British pop!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Feel free to disabuse me of this vauge feeling, but based on similar programs I've seen on VH1, I suspect that the resultant show will probably have some of the talking heads saying "Wait, hang on, that's actually a great song" -- whereas a similar show based on the Best Songs Ever probably wouldn't have people saying, "hey, that's actually a bunch overrated crap."

Will this be the case? And if so, why the asymmetry?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, who is for a kicking TVs and shouting party when this airs??

Me! And as I suggested it upthread, I hereby volunteer to hold the Glasgow sub-branch meeting of the "we hate the ninjas of the obvious" night. But only if RJG sings along with McArthur Park.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Will this be the case?

I think you're right. Probably a lot of people want to see the songs they actually like in this countdown - guilty pleasures and whatnot. I certainly wouldn't want to watch a program about 20 songs I really hate unless the commentary was fantastic.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

How come Kylie, Stefan Dennis and Craig McLachlan all make the list but no JASON DONOVAN?

If I was him I'd be well pissed off - too mediocre and forgettable even to make a throwaway Channel 4 poll of rubbish records.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

god that yashere person is so fucking annoying.

has anyone seen her do stand up, I can't imagine how such an idiot could have anything funny to say

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

that braying yashere twat had her own show on BBC3, no wonder nobody's watching it.

and *I* *CANNOT* *BELIEVE* that they've dared to put "Because We Want To" on there when surely it is the greatest record evah. heathens

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Records I like on this list:

11. BECAUSE WE WANT TO - BILLIE
16. CA PLANE POUR MOI - PLASTIC BERTRAND
28. DIRRTY - CHRISTINA AGUILERA
33. EBENEEZER GOODE - THE SHAMEN
45. I LOST MY HEART TO A STARSHIP TROOPER - SARAH BRIGHTMAN AND HOT GOSSIP
60. LET'S GET READY TO RHUMBLE - PJ AND DUNCAN
70. MMMBOP - HANSON

And that's it. A lot of the rest of them are genuinely awful... but when on earth did Catherine Zeta Jones release a record and who thought it would be a good idea.

I predict a resounding victory for Black Lace or the Millennium Prayer. But WHERE THE FUCK IS MULL OF KINTYRE?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I lost my heart to a starship trooper = classic

# flashing lights in hyperspace, dum de dum, de de dum deee, dum deee..

the "uh! ah! uh! uh! ah! uh!" bit is the best.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e, I'm sure we played most of these records last time I was round your house.

Aah, the ignominy of being an overlooked novelty record... whither Snooker Loopy or the Chicken Song?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

DIRRTY??????????

What the fuck?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, themed FT night ahoy

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

yes matt I think we did.

we used to sing the chicken song in school assembly, as such it will always hold a special place in my heart

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold a chicken in the air
Stick a deckchair up your nose
Buy a jumbo jet
And then bury all your clothes
Paint your left knee green
And extract your wisdom teeth
Form a string quartet
And pretend your name is Keith

Skin yourself alive
Learn to speak Arapahoe
Climb inside a dog
And behead an Eskimo
Eat a Renault Four
Wear salami in your ears
Cassarole your gran
Disembowel yourself with spears

robster (robster), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

and then we all did just that

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The B Side of Starship Trooper (or maybe the follow up, I forget) has the funniest fade ever. It's very fast and it's right in the middle of a verse - it sounds like the studio engineer had gone out for a coffee and returned to find them recording and thought "Fucking hell I'm not letting the world hear any more of that!"

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan makes an excellent point.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

sneer sneer sneer WE ARE CLEVERER THAN YOU middle class media wankery (like all of C4).

too scared to compile a list which would include - live forever? like a rolling stone? no woman no cry? work it? walk on the wild side? all you need is love? common people? anarchy in the uk? tumbling dice? she bangs the drums?

there you are - ten of the GENUINELY worst singles ever made. for starters.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

erm....

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello vs Channel 4 in the battle for who gets the biggest cynical rise out of ILE...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)
