colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i didn't, but i'm not a vegetarian either

i'll ask my vegan smoke buddy what he thinks

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Not all vegetarians are into it for health reasons; many don't really give a damn about the health aspect. Plus, I suspect smoking is harder to quit than meat.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

uh, some people just don't like the aspect of eating things with faces

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why you cut the heads off. Duh.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not a vegetarian and I don't smoke, but even without insider knowledge I supsect that

(deep breath)

...its coz tobacco and cannabis are vegetables!

now if vegetarians smoked beef jerky or sausages it'd be harder to justify.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

for supsect read suspect. supsect should be a word tho.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkH, should vegetarians smoke datura for the same reason? Don't answer that.

Right, I'm off to spark up a black pudding.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i suppose a veggie sausage'd be ok. It would make a good cigar.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Veggies obviously hate vegetables (that's why they eat them duh). So why would they be adverse to burning vegetable matter and sucking up its death fumes?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

do they start forest fires too?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i prefer, cannabis smokers who are anti-cigarette.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to smoke & am a vegetarian. My reasoning was that I wanted to smoke & I didn't like killing animals for meat. If this statement 'vegetarians who smoke - explain your reasoning' is with reagrds to the health issue, I never became a veggie for health reasons. Or if the statement is from a cruely to animals pov, then yes I guess I was a hypocrit. That said, I don't smoke anymore, so my conscience is clear. But trainers on the other hand well...

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What the world needs is a smokable trainer

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

with reference to my Pub Dogs thread, I wonder if anyone has done any research into the effects of passive smoking on the health of animals in pubs?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant from the leather pov, but a smokable trainer, that could be kinda cool!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda understand this question, though possibly not like Colin meant it. Here in Finland at least most (ethical) vegetarians are also environmentally concious, and tobacco is definitely environmentally unfriendly since rainforests are cut down to produce it. I'm vegan and I used to smoke, which eventually became an unbearable situation for me, because of the health and the environmental effects of smoking. I'm not a vegan for my health, but that doesn't mean I don't want to live healthy. So I quit. It wasn't easy, though; nicotine is, alongside cocaine, physically the most addictive substance there is. As someone said, it's easier to give up meat than smoking.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Tee-totallers who have sex - explain yourselves!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's much more fun when you're not pissed, really..."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a cannidis smoker and anti-cigarete. The two arn't mutually exclusive, you know.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know any vegans were into it for health reasons. Have you SEEN many?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

May I point out at this point, Tuomas, that there was no real moral thinking behind my question. Someone on another thread suggested we start this thread, so I did. I thought it might be fun to annoy people. It was sheer me-tooism of the worst kind, nothing but shit-stirring, probably done becuase I just *sob* want to belong. Am I sorry I did it? No, not really.

And Andrew, you are spot on about vegetarians being unhealthy. They are extremely unhealthy. Most look as though they are about to die. Also, it befuddles their thinking, so that they end up believing in all kinds of nonsense like the afterlife and astrology. Plus, their superegos are too strong. Right, I've gone too far this time. I'm drunk, you see.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Ronan was being sincere, Johnney B

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What about nurses who smoke? Does anyone know a nurse who DOESN'T smoke? It's craziness I tells ya!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah is RIGHT!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I might know a nurse who doesn't smoke if my sister manages to actualy give up this time. (so, a very big "no", then)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, don't you people know that cigarettes are made of meat?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought it strange that some of the most environmentally aware people I know still littered sidewalks with cigarette butts. (Note: I was not exempt from this when I used to smoke.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother is a nurse and she doesn't smoke.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the idea that cigarettes are harder to give up than meat is madness.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's funny when ppl are on a health kick and switch to a 'mild' brand

dave q, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the idea that cigarettes are harder to give up than meat is madness.

what are you talking about, giving up cigarettes is fuckin' hellish, giving up meat is easy - just a matter of changing perspective and bang! meat doesn't smell/sound good, etc.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I truly think that one of the ten thousand binary divisions in the world is between the people for whom that's true and the people for whom it isn't.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Tep, largely due to experience.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the "good for you" cigarette!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

look:
1. you have already forfeited the complete 2 egg, bacon/sausage, hashbrowns + toast breakfast
2. the only other kind of breakfast = coffee and a cigarette
3. give up both and you obviously perish of starvation

jones (actual), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

we've already been through this: smokable trainers

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

for breakfast??

jones (actual), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not just for breakfast!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a vegetarian, and an ex-smoker. i'm not a vegetarian for health reasons, i'm a vegetarian cos i care about what happens to the world. i'm against smoking for the same reasons but i don't hold it against anyone who smokes because its an addiction. now that i don't drink, btw, smoking has entirely lost whatever appeal it ever had to me.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody hell LML. You don't drink, don't smoke... what do you do?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i play rock music with a band called minor threat.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well i would, if i wasn't partial to certain hallucinogenic substances.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

um...um...Tobacco is a vegetable.
No animals were harmed in the *creation* of this cigarette.
(Though the vegetarian smoker -- an animal -- will be hurt when he smokes it.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

at least i can't fucking think!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Goody shoes goody shoes goody goody two shoes

oops (Oops), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you oops. Save the gorillas etc.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

where are the subtle innuendos?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno - must be something inside.

*drum riff*

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 September 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know any vegans were into it for health reasons. Have you SEEN many?

Some athletes are/become vegans because it helps them to keep in shape. Carl Lewis was the most famous example, though he quit being a vegan after his career ended.

And Andrew, you are spot on about vegetarians being unhealthy. They are extremely unhealthy. Most look as though they are about to die. Also, it befuddles their thinking, so that they end up believing in all kinds of nonsense like the afterlife and astrology.

*sigh*

I hope you're kidding, and don't truly believe in that stereotype. Sure, there are some hippie vegetarians as well, but at least most vegetarians/vegans I know are left-wing atheist-materialists.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a vegetarian, and no-one would ever accuse me of looking like i'm about to die, or believing in any of that hokey shit.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

why isn't there a thread inviting drinkers who watch television to explain their reasoning?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And Andrew, you are spot on about vegetarians being unhealthy. They are extremely unhealthy. Most look as though they are about to die.
Absolute rubbish! I am a vegetarian & have been for the past 14 years. I am not waif like, nor am I about to keel over due to my unhealthyness!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pinkpanther to photo thread!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 19 September 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it true that vegetarians eat babies made of cauliflower?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 September 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yus!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 19 September 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

:-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 19 September 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

When I first saw this question I assumed it was asking "Why is killing yourself more OK than killing farm animals?" which seemed somewhat clever. But it seems my interpretation was incorrect.
