so what is everyone wearing? i will be dressing up at least three times, and have only decided on one costume so far (tracy flick from "Election") and need more ideas. anyone have great costumes chosen or brilliant pranks planned?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Before I chickened out and shaved my goatee, I was so going to try for Capt. Jack Sparrow. Though a party with two or more of them outdoing each other could well be hell.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

If all goes according to plan, I will be playing drums for Th3 M4nn3qu1ns on All Hallow's Eve wearing a big fluffy pink bunny suit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

This'll make me boring as hell, but I don't do the costume thing, haven't in ages. Last year, at a Halloween party, I had like jeans and a T-shirt or something --

"What're you, anyway?"
"I'm the invisible man."
"But I can see you!"
"Yeah, it's a crap costume."

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Why no costuming, Tep?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like costuming either, I just feel uncomfortable. I like to think that it's because I'm so comfortable with myself that I don't like pretend to be something else, but basically, I'm just a lazy spoilsport.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to dress up as a member of the New Romantic tribe, but I have no earthly idea how to pull something like that off! I mean, I know I'll probably just dress up to hand out candy to the little kiddies who pass by and stuff, but I'd love to get into the WHOLE spirit of Halloween and dress up as something whilst handing out free sugary buzz, and I figure since I've been a huge New Romantic fanatic for seemingly AGES (er, more like approx. 12 years now), it'd be great to express that during Halloween.

I don't even know how to do my hair that way, btw. Hmmm.

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a costumer either, mostly out of lassitude.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i may go as the lion from Rudolph the red nose reindeer or chemical ali

kephm, Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the slutty costume queen from hell. If I lose about 5lbs, it's Lara Croft time finally. Last year it was too cold :(

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Why no costuming, Tep?

I'm not sure. It's either part of the "I don't really like anything but jeans, T-shirts, and loud shirts" thing or the "I never sing and never dance" thing (which isn't stage fright type stuff so much as ... a complete void of personal expression in that area).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't go in costume so much as go in character. The pirate thing seems alluring just for the vocabulary... but I'm thinking of some kind of twist that would make me more of a modern day South China seas pirate with an assault rifle. It could be something entirely different though.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Which reminds me. "Talk like a Pirate Day" is this friday!

http://www.talklikeapirate.com/

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Cprek, it is urgent and key that one of these Halloweens you go as a mad scientist/evil genius.

avast ye crosspost, aaarrgh!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dale the Titled is the best Halloween costumer ever. i will never forget the year he came as a redneck dressed as jason from friday the 13th. mullet and all. i can't wait to see this pirate getup. and its true, he remains faithful to his character the entire time.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jambot to thread!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Which reminds me. "Talk like a Pirate Day" is this friday!

Easily the most inconsequential event/phenomenon I've ever heard covered on NPR. Which is why it's great!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking costumes are so much pressure it drives me nuts, so we almost never dress up and then we regret it the next day and swear that next year will be different, and it never is.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*pushes red back-lit buttons on chest, drops beat, tweaks filters, party people get down to jams coming from shoulder-mounted speaker*

jambot (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Every year I threaten to go as Abe Lincoln but chicken out which is too bad because I've got some comedy gold, to wit:

(Looking at crack in the wall) To host: "I'd have that looked at, you know what they about a House Divided."

Trying to pick up a chick: "You can email me at my Gettysburg Address."

etc

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

they "say" about a House Divided

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

it's already a disaster

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Anything but me."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I motion that we pass a referendum making all Halloween costumes this year pirate costumes or close derivatives. This will eliminate the need for finding 'the best costume' and everyone can just have a good time as pirates. There's lots of room to maneuver; various hooks, peg legs, parrots, monkeys, patches, etc -as well as the sexy/slutty pirate winch so popular with the ladies.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

your plans for a pirate master race will never be realized! landlubbers unite! (although i do find the idea of so many hooks and pegs legs quite appealing).

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

lawrence you should make those jokes in a pirate voice. just picture it!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Brilliant!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so happy about this thread. Actually a couple of days ago I officially started brainstorming about what I'm going to do this year, though to tell the truth I'm kind of stumped.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i am going as the littlest hobo theme-tune

jones (actual), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to try to convince a bunch of friends to go as one of the gangs from the Warriors (someone suggested this on another thread; I think it's a brilliant idea). Last time we had a group-costume, we all went as Heaven's Gaters....easy costume, nikes, purple shroud, etc.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot resist the urge to remind everyone of the Halloween episode of NewsRadio which brought us the great costume idea of "The Man Without Socks".

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine could give you a run for yr slutty money, Allycat. Whycome you didn't call me back? I'm working on getting her to go as either a slutty soccer girl or a slutty secretary.

Ok bye.

ModJ, Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking burqa, but maybe that's more last year?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

like a burqa ghost or something.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Slutty Taliban

ModJ, Thursday, 18 September 2003 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I want some Jack Sparrows! Now! On a related note: the fancy pirate, yay!

I don't really have anything here to dress up with, which is a bit depressing. Any ideas?

Someone explain this phenomenon of turning perfectly normal (har har) costume ideas into a sexy/slutty version and, presto!, it's the female version. Can we do this for the boys too this year, please?

Fuck it, I'm going to just go as a full on hooker. Knew their had to be a use for those fishnet stockings that trear the first time you wear 'em.

mouse, Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't understand.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Slutty clowns.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i still don't understand

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

pirate = a dude with missing body parts who goes argh!

pirate in booty shorts = chixor

I don't get it either.

mouse, Thursday, 18 September 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

man, the onion had an infographic on 'sexy version' costumes for women. chums, get of f the space bar!!! i'm going as chums. wwell, the sexy female version at least...

I won't be able to beat my Adrianna Moltesanti costume from last year. Damn.

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 18 September 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

We dont "do" halloween here which is a bit of a shame, cos a costume thing would be fun.

I could go as Donnie Darko dressed up as the crap skeleton in his normal hoodie in err... Donnie Darko. A costume within a costume. Or something.

Or as Willow from Buffy, ha! ;P

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 September 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Will no one second the pirate costume referendum?!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Thursday, 18 September 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

my roomates and i are hosting a super early party tonight. it is not a halloween party really, but everyone has to come as an original fictional character. i found a pair of red framed sunglasses that are are quite large. i will be wearing them tonight as part of my sally-jesse-raphael's-evil-twin-sister-superhero-villian ensemble. yes, i will have a cape. and a red miniskirt and tall boots. i can't wait to fight/commit crimes and host my own talk show.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You showed your hand!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

damnit emily why couldn't you have had this party last night! I can't come out to play tonight. I coulda gone as a radioactive-dreadlocked alien warlock gangsta rapper! :(

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 16 October 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

damnit nick! never fear, we will be hosting many a party this halloween season! and combo costumes are always welcome.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 16 October 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I like Halloween so much anymore -- hot girls I'll never fuck dressing unbearably slutty AND getting trashed... not cool.

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 16 October 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend Kim wants me to dip tampons in blue paint, tie them together and drape myself with them, thereby making me Picasso's Blue Period. Please remember to blame her if you are offended by the concept or pun of this idea.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 16 October 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm doing Michael Corleone, I think...

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 16 October 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking about making myself a white tiger costume.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 16 October 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking of doing Dazed & Confused Parker Posey although it's old and played out. It's easy and I could go around screaming "AIR RAID YOU FRESHMAN BITCHES!" all night. That would rule.

However it looks like I'll be working at two different places that night (this is after teaching of course) so I think a costume is out of the question. (I have to wear all black at the restaurant). I'm thinking of maybe just wearing little devil ears or something to look somewhat festive.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 16 October 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I just know somebody around here is gonna dress as Bartman.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked at a restaurant once where everyone was in costume, except one server didn't know he was supposed to be in costume. Now, this guy likes to fish A LOT; he runs out to his car and comes back in some of those goofy plastic overall things that fisherman who wade out into creeks & rivers wear (I think you know what their traditional name is). All night long he goes up to each of his tables and says "Hello, I'm Tommy, and I'll be your wader this evening". Badass.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a tan corduroy suit at goodwill for $8 last week, all i need is a headband and my transformation into the Baumer is complete.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

There was that one Halloween that I dressed like the Brady Bunch mom and wore the costume to work. I was totally decked out in a wig and TONS of blue eye shadow, but a lot of clients that walked in to the office seemed to think I was just really weird.

(Disclaimer: Ok, so sometimes I am really weird, but not that weird)

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

So I'm going as a slutty lumberjack apparently because Tom bought me a ridiculous furry hat that is lumberjackesque and I'm going to wear it with a red plaid flannel, tied at the waist with a denim miniskirt and suspenders and fishnets and huge boots. I was toying with the idea of getting those ugly ass Timberland stilettos but that's just going too far, even for me. I mean those things are hideous.

Oh and I plan to make this hat my new fashion statement outside the realm of Halloween, I call it Siberian chic. You will all be wearing furry hats come January, trust me.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Timberland has stilelettos?!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't find a photo of them now but yeah, maybe they aren't by Timberland? But they have 'em.

I did find THESE though, ugh:

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Those are way sweeter than the butt-ugly Timberlands. Oh, so I've decided that I want to be an '80s metal chick for Halloween just so I can get a mullet wig. I really want a mullet wig.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I fully support the Ally Siberian Chic mandate for winter 2003-4.

okay, so i think my roomates and i are maybe going as sparkle motion. don't doubt my commitment!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Saturday, 18 October 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Timberland-esque heels on the Payless site; you should get them!

I can't find a godamn red/white/blue headband to complete my Richie Tenenbaum costume. Well I found one for $3.00 but they want $20. to ship it overnight.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend Martin is throwing a Halloween party! I am saved.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a full picture album of everyones costumes.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, they sell those red/white/blue terrycloth 1970s throwback baseball headbands in like every sports store. You can even get a Red Sox one. Have you checked your local Modell's/Sports Authority eequivalent?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i was gonna be kurt rambis, but to get the uni it'd set me back $500. i am/was crushed.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

all we got out here is Dicks Sporting Goods and all they had was plain white ones. I am going to check a few more places this week though.

$500 for a rambis jersey? cripes.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking of being the Ringu girl but wasn't quite sure if I wanted to go stomping around barefoot all night.

-- Carey (flembac...), October 6th, 2003.

I might go to Metros in Cardiff on friday as her, do you know her name in the film?

I figure the costume is easy. I don't need a wig for it, just push my hair forward. White my face and hands and black nail varnish and make up round my eyes, then all i need is a long white night dress which I can probably get from a charity shop or off my mother.

I'll probably bottle it tho!

mei (mei), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to go as Richie Tenenbaum last year, but bottled it. I wouldn't as him this year, due to the possibility that someone will associate him with his suicide-to-the-tune-of-Elliott-Smith and freak out. But the plan is back on for next year!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

(Which is not to say that Chris shouldn't: I am regularly oversensitive)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

what should i be? only 2 days to come up with something. and apparently it isn't like home here, they expect halloween = scary or something. so something scary. ideas?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think any of the people at this party will know who Elliot Smith is besides my wife and I, so i think we'll be ok.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW I know both of this Richie Tenenbaum and of this Elliot Smith of whom you speak, and if I saw you dressed as Mr. Tenenbaum, I would not even once think, "Oh my god, doesn't he know Elliot Smith is dead!"

Allyzay, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah. in case you're wondering if i have any costume-y props to work with, in my wardrobe i have: black chin length wig from charlie's angels day, black sideburns from last year's elvis costume, nun's habit hat thing. what's it called? a wimple?

creative ideas on how to use those in a cool costume would be welcome.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Im also sure half the people won't even know who Richie Tenenbaum is either. Or Margot. We are trying to convince my friend and his wife to go as Chaz and Royal. She's got the perfect Chaz curly black hair.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay so all the other costumes were no-gos, I'm running with Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law for Th3 Mann3qu1ns gig -> either a ninja or Buckethead for the remainder of the night.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah , i am skipping my "regular ritchie w/beard, hair-ritchie in the bathroom-ritchie covered in blood 3part costume idea this year.

kephm, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

obv colette you wear the sideburns with the wimple and go as Sister Elvis.

seven months pass...
This is hilarious - no one ended up posting any photos from Halloween.

Anyway, just b/c I rolled across this pic recently...
http://www.savonarolamustburn.com/hallow03.jpg

I had to dress up last minute for an office thing. Not mandatory, but everyone else was, which sorta made it mandatory. And I was new too. All homemade, this costume. My boss couldn't look at me all day she was so..overwhelmed? by it. (I don't think "grossed out" is quite the right word/phrase.) Little children of co-workers were terrified; one random passerby in the building gave me a gesture like I'd dressed up as a terrorist or something.

Yeah, not a fun day.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss Emilymv's posts.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

twenty years pass...

This is the longest Halloween thread I could find, and it hasn't been updated in 20 years! I recognize in this thread different versions of many user names I know today

I wanted to say:

I really like Halloween. When we were kids we loved dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating even though the weather was often bitterly cold. I remember looking up through the gnarly branches of our maples and oaks which had lost all their leaves at that point, to see the moon surrounded by clouds, and reveling in the spookiness of it all.

Our parents and our neighbors made apple cider, and the kids were excited to drink it when batches of it fermented into hard cider. We actually had parties where we bobbed for apples, such a strange custom

I still have that leftover sense of mystery from it - the candy and apples and burning leaves and knocks on the door and ouija boards and fortune tellers and ghosts and all of that stuff. I buy candy every year for Halloween even though I get only one or two trick-or-treaters where I now live. SF functions as a young-adult Halloween holiday, but I’m long since over participating in that
