Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 18 September 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been terrific fun knowing an Isabel while all this has been in the news.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 18 September 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

possibly stupid question(s): are there hurricanes anywhere besides Gulf of Mexico->Southeast US and Japan (do typhoons = hurricanes?)? India?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 18 September 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently, typhoons = hurricanes

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 18 September 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

David, some news from Howard's Pub! From this story:

But a few thousand hardy -- or foolhardy -- souls ignored evacuation orders. Virginia Beach police suggested they write their names in permanent marker on their forearms so they could be identified if they are injured or killed.

At Howard's Pub on the Outer Banks' isolated Ocracoke Island, bartender James Tucker said he and five other employees resolved early Thursday to "hang out and drink beer until the cable runs out."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 September 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

This was always a useful hurricane site; I used to check it daily from about August to November. (It's a little less interesting once a storm runs ashore, though.)

"And if you think naming a destructive storm after a woman is sexist, you obviously have never seen the gals grabbing for items at a clearance sale..."

Ironically enough, had my flight back from Spain left a few hours later, Isabel could've caused a postponement or re-route to Newfoundland.

(I've always wanted to see Newfoundland.)

hstencil, Friday, 19 September 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

He returns! And how was Spain?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty good. but that's probably for another thread.

Isabal was a non-event in the history of hurricanes, as it turned out.

I suspect the only reason anyone besides the Weather Channel made a big deal of it was because there was a chance it would hit NYC.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Non-event" is the right word. In DC the biggest damage seems to have been some downed trees, some people without electricity. I made it into work this morning only to discover that the database program I'm supposed to be using won't let me do any work. And it appears that the person who would be responsible to taking care of that didn't make it in today. Gosh darn.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 19 September 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Bummer......

smee (smee), Friday, 19 September 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

16 dead people = non-event?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 19 September 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"I suspect the only reason anyone besides the Weather Channel made a big deal of it was because there was a chance it would hit NYC."

Not because at the time it started making the news, it was one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes of the last fifteen years? A few years ago, Floyd landed near NYC and got no attention.

Benjamin (benjamin), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still shocked and awed by that first pic Blount posted. Wow.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom (in NOVA) has no electricity and no water, but luckily no trees fell, only branches.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 19 September 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty cool what a few decades of weather tracking technology can accomplish. I just wish we would give these storms more sinister names.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 19 September 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

snopes is trying to figure out if the pic is for real:
