Sporting News: C/D?

I was reading the new issue ("big hands"), and enjoying some of the scout comments in the baseball section. I love that stuff, and I think the Sporting News is the only national mag that really has it. I also like that they use all the local beat writers to cover the individual teams in each section, as opposed to Sports Illustrated style national perspective. I *don't* like all their stupid op/ed guest features, or that relief pitcher guy who writes in the baseball section. Also, why don't they print baseball stats anymore? That was like the whole point of buying it when I was a kid.

Anyway, who wants to be a sports nerd?

I've rarely read it, because for some reason I never see it on the newsstands except for seasonal specials -- it's all ESPN now (ESPN must have better college basketball coverage, because since moving to Indiana I've noticed it's very much the default sports magazine, and Sports Illustrated is shuffled off into a corner).

I dig the idea of the local beat writers, though. Next time I'm at an airport I'll look there, the newsstands are usually more thorough.

Of course, but I can't take it with me on lunch.

Actually, you'd think I'd be pretty sick of hearing about sports what with me listening to sports talk radio almost all the time in the car.

I'll have you know that I've been baseball scouting guide free since 1989. Still it is put together nicely...

I think that the print edition is the best there is, but I am not a fan of their revamped website. They've let Fox Sports come and take it over. Blech.

Has no one mentioned the greatest website in the universe?

I got off the _TSN_ bus in the late '80s after they dropped the boxscores. I suspect a lot of people who bought it just for the stats found _USA Today_ to be a cheaper alternative and never came back. And _Baseball America_ has more thorough coverage of the minors.

I think it's a pretty good all around sport mag - I think I like it because I know I'm getting pretty good info on teams in other cities. The local stuff, I mostly have already heard it.
