I've done this before, but I think this time it's final.

There's nothing for me here except a jerkoff peanut gallery and grudging half-acknowledgement from the two or three people who can still tolerate me. I'll stop posting now. You'll miss nothing.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know what's going on with me, for real, I've just had a shitty last couple of days regarding my personal life (I'd rather not get into it) and music has been literally the only thing keeping me together lately, and when I get shit thrown at me by people who hate the music I like for stupid superficial reasons I just flip the fuck out. I'm making an idiot out of myself in public and I should just go away for a while.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(think this but more depressing)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's stupid superficial reasons, why do you flip out? Who cares what trife thinks? I mean, I'm interested in what he or anyone else has to say, but it's not gonna make or break any relationships I have with music.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

see you next week nate!!

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 20 September 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You think the same of Benoit as I do, surely meaning you are the best this society has to offer.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 20 September 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Nate, not that you remember/know me, but I hope your personal life gets better.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 20 September 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I sent this (in a slightly different form) to Blount, but I spent so much time writing it I might as well post it here before I take my leave. Just to let you all know, I'm not planning on hanging from a rafter with a belt around my neck and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" skipping perpetually on my turntable.

In all honesty, I know I overreacted to everything last night. But between the feeling that I'm part of the "nu-ILM" that some people want exiled and the fact that I can't post anything about rap (or anything period) without trife stumbling in trying to start some shit, I'm getting that "hitting my head against the wall" feeling. That, and I figure I've contributed little of substance but one-liners, probably because it's the only stuff I feel safe posting without getting shit thrown at me. (I don't know how nickalicious can take it, personally. Well, OK, maybe I do -- he's not fucking neurotic.) And yeah, I know trife was trying to be "friendly" in my birthday thread, but then he just turned that into another "let's shit on Def Jux" thing. And "punk is for racists"? See, I can't even tell if he's joking anymore. I've seen him post about Balzac without making the obvious scrotal reference, so I know he's not a moron, but the only thing he seems to be trying to do most places is get himself over. Seems like 90% of the time, when he's not starting his own threads, his contributions are limited to jumping into other peoples' threads and bitching about how awful everybody's tastes are, as if he thinks he's rescuing hip-hop for the REAL ILM heads or something:

Exhibit A
Exhibit B (where he gets served by Chuck Eddy)
Exhibit C
Exhibit D

And really man, I could get on some Pee-Wee's Big Adventure shit with an Exhibit Q (a model of the ENTIRE SHOPPING CENTER!), but I won't. Maybe I can't take a joke, but I just don't feel like that sort of shit is really laden with humor potential in the first place.

At the risk of quoting KRS-One and thus making myself out to look corny, my problem (if you're curious) is that I take this hip-hop shit too serious. Every time someone posts about rap it's "trife to thread" this and "i need some advice from trife" and "wwtd?" which makes him out to be the ILM rap grand poobah of huge swinging dickdom, and when the ILM Rap Authority's main arguments are things like "Outkast fans are patronizing closet racists", that makes me feel like my opinion on ILM re: hip-hop isn't welcome. I've been having a hard time in the last few days, and usually music is the thing that cheers me up, but when I feel like I can't be "right" about music then I just get pissed off. And then I make a retard of myself on a public messageboard. Hooray!

I am feeling somewhat better, at least. Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "What the Hell is This" can have that effect.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 20 September 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, bro...why even care? I mean, I don't see what all the hubub's about. I'll second what oops said. Avoid making a message board the be all end all of your social endeavors. Sorry to be rude, but suck it up. I like your posts and you should keep at it. Fuck what other people think.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 20 September 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i would say Nate deserves as much respect as Ethan for knowing what he knows and thinking what he thinks about the music he likes. I'm sure everyone feels that anyway. The whole 'X is better than Y' argument going around is annoying because it's so objective anyway. and just because someone can back up their rep as the authority on a certain genre it doesn't mean they can't be wrong some of the time.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 20 September 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, Ian went by way of laundry cord in the kitchen, if Debbie's account is accurate.

duane, Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Nate, you have as much right as anyone else to post here, but it's dirty pool to mount a campaign to chase someone else off.

Dan I., Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate - I agree with Trife about hip-hop more than I agree with you but you're an ILM fixture (nu or old or whichever) and an intelligent, heartfelt writer too: take a break by all means (give up ILM if you feel you must) but don't stop writing and don't stop defending the stuff you want to defend even if you're doing it on your blog not a message board.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just going to have a hiatus instead of leaving completely, I've decided. I've also decided I'm going to make one more post before I go and it'll be a more fitting coda than "hate death murder angst" shit like this.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

nate, i like you and all, and i don't want to see you go. but i get a real "hank hill talking to bobby" urge when i read these threads of yours.

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 20 September 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 20 September 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate, don't you remember in English class when the teacher would say: "Unlike those bastard subjects of Mathematics and Sciences, there are no correct answers here." The same thing applies here, except moreso, because in this case there are more than a few class clowns all vying for a perceivably limited amount of attention.

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 20 September 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

which would make Trife Dooley, then.
"i peed in outkast's locker"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 20 September 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

there are correct answers in English. Ever heard of grammar?
