My Portfolio

i need to update my portfolio of work severely in time for Friday morning as it's very out of date. at the moment i'm just planning on picking out the best work from the last 18 months and printing it out on a bog-standard printer (it will mostly look rubbish at 72dpi tho). but does anyone have any other hopefully more exciting ideas about how i can spruce things up? novel ways to present body of work that can be knocked up in 48 hours? thanking you

what kind of work?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Tatoo it all on the body of a zebra.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Naked pics?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what kind of work?

combination of print work (posters, flyers, adverts, stationery etc.) and web work (sites, graphics, examples of code possibly) mainly.

i like the zebra idea but i've already been banned from London Zoo

the adventurous tale in epic verse i doubt they would have time to read, which is a shame as it's a lovely idea...*cough*

pinkpanther - naked pics of whom??

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ahem, you!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

haha...

'hmmm, an exhibitionist with no apparent cause, that's just the kind of radical thinking we need, welcome aboard!'

Well chicken might but beef is down.
People just aren't getting enough vitamin meat.

stevem for the web stuff you should make a snapshot of the pages you want to show and then reduce them by like 50% - this looks better at 72dpi and still gives them a feel for what you did. underneath that, have some text that explains the goal of each design and how it fits w/that client's strategy.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Include pictures of kittens.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't burning a CD be better?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the best thing would be if they just went to my website...but they said 'BRING a portfolio' and i think they may prefer to see stuff actually in print as the job will involve a degree of that. i'm just wondering if i should present it in some wacky way so as to make a better impact...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a laptop with the files of your website cached on it so you can show them?

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like my idea already.

Tatoos.

if most of your stuff or if your best stuff is on the web you should print it out and put it on one of those thick black boards or in your portfolio page. because you usually start out talking and then looking at the things you brought. especially if they are older or not internet-based people. and sometimes they call others over to look too and they pretty much made up there mind before they finally go over to a computer monitor to look at stuff (if they do at all).

i don't know if you can throw together an amazing, clever, novel approach in 48 hours. it usually involves thinking, then shopping for the right materials, waiting on the fancy service turn-arounds, etc. so well-executed traditional is probably your best bet.

as for printing web stuff. i wouldn't just reduce it and keep it at 72 dpi, i'd change the inch size/ dpi ratios so it's a smaller print at a higher resolution. i've never really seen explanatory text, i think it's better to just elaborate in person if they ask about it.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

all sounds good, i'm doing pretty much just that now, and yeh no real annotation needed when it can be talked about instead. going to get some A3 sheets printed out tomorrow - cutting it fine...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget to grab a printer cartridge, as well: damn shame if the printer gives out, in the middle
