"What is Freenet?
Freenet is free software designed to ensure true freedom of communication over the Internet. It allows anybody to publish and read information with complete anonymity. Nobody controls Freenet, not even its creators, meaning that the system is not vulnerable to manipulation or shutdown. Freenet is also very efficient in how it deals with information, adaptively replicating content in response to demand."

Anyone tried this software?

One can also use it to publish websites for free, with unlimited storage but it looks complicated

nine years pass...

My first e-mail account ever was with the Toronto Freenet back around '93 or '94. I just had a little modem at home, so I did all my e-mailing on that for about five years before switching over to a regular account. I'd still check it periodically, then as time passed, maybe once a year. Then I forgot about it all together.

Amazingly, they're still around. Who they service at this point, I have no idea--there are libraries for free access, and by the looks of it, the Freenet isn't altogether free anymore. Anyway, I phoned them today to see if there was any chance of retrieving my mail from back then. With a little help, I was able to log on. Couldn't find my old mail, but there were 3000+ pieces of junk mail in my inbox. Someone named Irina from the Russian dating service is especially persistent.

Not amazingly, they seem to not be around anymore.
