Fall Fashion -- Don't Let It Pass You By

The weather is getting cooler and the stores are filled with clothes in autumnal colors.

Or perhaps you are following the pop retro-future 60s mandate.

What are you wearing and what do you hope to get this fall?

I bought a brown curduroy skirt from H&M and brown fall-y stripey socks from Flying A but I don't have a shirt to go with them.

I am also thinking of white pseudo retro button-up calf-high boots from Williamsburg.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I am obeying the TALL BOOTS mandate. Today I am wearing chocolate-colored stretchy suede over-the-knee high heeled boots, tiny velvet panne leopard spot print on silk skirt and a oatmeal-colored shetland wool funnel-neck sweater.

I hope to get some decent chocolate~ colored separates, I am thinking a corduroy skirt and a nice merino sweater. I need work shirts, possibly striped.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've gotten a long-sleeve black shirt (obvious wardrobe staple), brown and beige and cream and black floral print skirt that flairs out, and a sporty zip-up sweater with a retro look and pastel colors and beige and cream.

I really want a pleated A line skirt and tall semi-dressy boots.

We (NA & I) went to the mall last night (a new outdoor one near us) and I touched everything in J Crew and Anne Taylor Loft as NA shook his finger and his head. I'm supposed to be saving for our move. Blah. (But Chicago is cold! I need more warm stuff, right?)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Silver is U&K but then again I saw that every season. I bought that great red and white polo at Alphabets from the sale rack, I think that will look good with my black tennis skirt and the white knee socks with the red lettering on them from Flying A, but I haven't any shoes to go with them. I wish I hadn't throw out my platform oxfords cos that would be good.

I've taken to dying my hair multi-tonal autumn colors!

xpost: boots are U&K as well but then again I say that every season. I am still wearing my lace up midcalf boots but I'd like to get some more pairs. I wish I could wear such awesome clothes to work, I'm wearing a boring beigh crepe suit with a black silk sweater and black strappy sandals :(

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot! I need more corduroy pants. I prefer skirts but I have a bunch of corduroy skirts already - beiges, brown, and dark reds. I only have one pair of corduroy pants and they're brown.

And, of course, whenever I say brown I mean chocolate!

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I'm supposed to be wearing these clothes to work either but it is the Jewish New Year and if anyone complains I can bring up the Holocast and then nobody can say anything.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

How the hell did I miss the red&white polo?

I've tried on two silver skirts so far this year. Both on them looked like mock leather that was spray-painted with silver. Do all silver skirts look this way? The first one was at that second-hand store in W'burg, it was like $10, over-the-kneee. I tried it on to try and cop Ally's style, it fit but the zipper part was extra-long, it was kinda weird. Then there was another one at H&M: this one was short!!! I wasn't in love with it either, so I am still silver-less.

I need more curdurouys too. I bought a brown pair at the pop shop in MCR but they don't fit so well I don't think, baggy. Well, maybe I'll try them out again today. And when I say brown I mean brown. Actually, the cords are more rust/sand/ight brown.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I should maybe try that on Dia de los Muertos???

There's a lot of good courderoy at the GAP right now, cos it's kind of thinner weight courderoy--I hate regular stuff, it makes me look kind of "huge assed" so to speak? I dunno everyone else looks fine in it though.

I think I am going to attempt to single-handed revive the seamed-stockings look.

I need more silver, H&M I come!!! It's ok if you cop my style cos I copped your tennis skirt.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That's okay cause that was Felicity's tennis skirt. Down with originality!

Mary

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That is a good game though, let's just throw all of our clothes in a big pile and then just mad grab them back and see what comes out?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't afford new clothes this season :( except for H&M. though my parents are in town so im trying to wear my rattiest clothing in the hopes they'll buy me those $1100 prada alligator gloves that i wouldn't mind having! or something more practical, like a Japanese schoolboy outfit

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What is all this talk about "affording" things? That's why god makes credit!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

These brown cords are so ill-fitting, I don't know what I was thinking when I bought them.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! I cannot wait to wear my fur trimmed sweater.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

best thread ever

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently, there's an H & M at that new mall, but we haven't seen that part yet. Hmm....

Sometimes when I say brown I mean brown... But I do really have a thing for chocolate brown right now.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan tell us your fall fashion.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought a bunch of new sweaters for fall in fall-ish colors with assorted types of necklines. I'm pretty pleased with myself because I usually can't clothes-shop worth a damn.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't bought anything stylish or interesting in so long, this thread is depressing.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What is all this talk about "affording" things? That's why god makes credit!

You're assuming I HAVE credit :(

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have credit either Phil, it's ok :(

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...
I have no fashion sense at all so there's no sense in saying a bunch of stuff. I love oxford shirts and flat front trousers (zzzzzzzzzzz), and I need shoes too. I don't want to turn this into a winter coat thread (as if I could anyway), but what's hot this year for men?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I really enjoy my sweater though, I got it at a vintage place, I forget the name but it's next door to Alphabets on Greenwich. Starstruck, maybe? It's a cream-colored cashmere cardigan with a white fur trim, it's crazy.

xpost, trenchcoats are always the way to go if you are asking me!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

phil-two, Would your parents really buy you $1100 gloves?!
Do you have a pic of them?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

A trenchcoat would be ok except for that it's as cold as a witch's tit here in the winter. A long wool overcoat may be needed and always looks sharp.

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't you get a wool trenchcoat? Maybe that is a bit girly, but I had one forever until I threw up all over it and mysteriously lost the belt and also tore the pockets.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

That red one? I really like that. I, too, show my clothes "tough love."

felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh no I still have the red coat! This was a coat of years past, like two years ago. I just can't keep a belt to a coat for some reason though.

I can prevent myself from puking on coats though, I'm quite shamed by that and also for the fact that I couldn't be bothered to get it properly cleaned. (TMI?)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really like the look with the belt that a trenchcoat has. Makes my ass look even more huge than it already does. Something like the Brooks Brothers Brookstorm Long Towncoat would be good. Too boring perhaps?

Bryan (Bryan), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Fashion Doctor, how much time do you give this trend of overlong, belted knit cardigan sweaters? Fall classic or the peasant shirt/turquoise pendant combo of seasons past?

Also, why is everyone shoving brightly colored striped WELLINGTON BOOTS in our faces at all times? I half want them but I think they would look fresh for about 2 minutes and then be puke-causing.

felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Boring is ok, but you should get one with a contrasting lining.

I think I'd like a leather trenchcoat this year but they are tres pricey. xpost, I really don't like those overlong, belted sweaters at all. They look good on some people but they are just not my style at all. Clingy things on my backside=BIG HUGE NO NO.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Costume National has an awesome cracked reddish/brownish leather jacket. i tried it on, but it looked far too masculine than anything i should be allowed to wear. also, it was $3100

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I've been wearing a few mod/60s accessories (belts mostly) but I don't like mod in general.. went to H&M and none of the pants have the right cut for me. this is most unfortunate.

I like tweed and 3/4 sleeve/bracelet sleeve vintage jackets, personally... and really need a cool pair of long gloves (winter gloves, just to be practical about it) - haven't found these yet. I guess I could use another good pencil skirt or two (pinstripes would be TOP), I am tall so they suit me better than the a-line ones.

Most of all I want, besides the gloves, some icy pastel colored sweaters, very very light, to wear with a couple of absurdly bright knitted scarves I've picked up in the past year. I'm lucky there are absolutely SUPER thrift shops around here.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

H&M pants don't really work on me either...but they had some awesome gloves there.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Fashion Doctor, how much time do you give this trend of overlong, belted knit cardigan sweaters? Fall classic or the peasant shirt/turquoise pendant combo of seasons past?

From the other side, I consider them simultaneously evocative and displacing. I know a couple of people they look good on but maybe they just suit "my type," whatever that is (also, I'm a hippie).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I really disliked them until ppl I knew started wearing them. Hmm.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

In what way whatsoever are you a hippie?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, gabb, I didn't mean that as accusatori-ly as it came out. Just intense curiosity!

felicity (felicity), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i did the brown spectrum earlier this week yet i am still having dreams of beige and cream camouflage with pink sakura leaves ... decidedly more spring-ly but my seasons are in reverse, hemispherical opposites ... it could be buenos aires ...

my usual autumn dreams have been deep maroons and navies ... discarded prep unis with pearlized cufflinks i am going to bed soon

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 September 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

hippieness has to be pondered. belted sweaters may require long hair.

i may break the plaid barrier this fall. maybe.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 26 September 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I am kind of stocking up on the mod right now but don't think I will wear much of it until the trend dies down. I have several pairs of knee high boots already and have gotten a white polyurethane mini, a black and white A line skirt from Zara, and several mod-ish tops from there too. Plus I have my scooter as an accessory if I ever remembered to take her out on the weekends.

Other recent purchases: some salvatore ferragamo mules that I have yet to wear, tons of knee socks, and a pewter flask. I have also decided to save a little and invest in a really nice, stylish winter coat that will not be used for work but only for play.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll have a chance to break out the Banana Republic-purchased pants a bit more, rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Carey, where did you get your knee-socks? I just ordered a brown three-pack from Delias; I can't wait until they arrive.

I think the mod thing is good for people who have always done mod, like our Hiromix-ish Carey, but I wonder about for mysef. As Felicity says, I suppose in mod-eration it is okay.

Sarah, re chocolate brown: I got boots last winter/spring that I thought were brown, but when I brought them home I realized they were chocolate brown. I think this is such a different color than regular brown (which has a billion different shades btw), it is so much closer to black, so dark, oily, and horse-y.

Belted cardigans: are we talking about the same tired things that have making the rounds for the past 5 or so years? I say pass, unless you already have one, and can just wrap it around yourself when the weather gets nippy. Or has there been a new innovation?

How do we feel about shawls? I just passed a girl wearing a brown plaid one. I think the key is to wear them asymetrically, something I am not artsy enough to do.

Curduroy pants: There could be a whole thread on this, really. The gap ones don't fit me that well, they are always too baggy in weird places. I like these stretchy ones from JJ or something. It's a weird brand but they come in every color and fit pretty well, if very snug. I want a pair in blue next. They also make jeans but I've never trained them on.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I got lots of knee socks when i was in London and and went into mod overload. There were a lot of new shops on Oxford St. that I had never recalled before, and didn't have time to explore. I was loving stuff in Top Shop (although the Cambridge one was more manageable for me, thus when I got to London I couldn't deal with buying anything) and I went into the new Dorothy Perkins flagship store that had lots of cheap clothes on par with H&M. Plus free massages and BEER! I was just starting to think that H&M was over and that they had expanded too fast, due to my disappointment with their summer line, but I went in recently and got an orange dot button down shirt, white fingerless gloves, a black pleated mini, white furry earmuffs, cream cordoroys, and an orange and cream sweater. So, H&M can stay.

I believe in the Mary Timony way of the trouser. She always rocks the brightly colors pants as her trademark. So, Mary, I would say get those cordoroys in EVERY color.

I was just thinking about the shawl too and was going to invest soon. The asymetric placement to me screams messenger bag, but perhaps that is comforting.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha (x post). I was just thinking about getting some knee high red boots, and a gold lasso.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I found the Oxford Street Top Shop overwhelming as well. Ed told me I should check out Dorothy Perkins, but I was on major store overload that day. I also wrongly assumed that the uniform shop was in Selfridges and then he informed the night before I was leaving that is was at John Lewis.

Carey, did you get your H&M loot here or in London? I didn't go into their London store due to more of the Oxford Circus Overload Syndrome.

Felicity, re galoshes, they are vile but very cheap, and shiny. I don't think you can go too wrong with them, and they may even come in handy on a rainy day.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Note the autumnal hair and shawl (blanket?)

(the old ones are the best)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

H&M loot here. (hate the soho one, have just started to have success with the 5th ave one, usually go to herald sq. although I just went to the one 1 avenue away which was very different and had better going out clothes and a more manageable layout). I didn't ever bother with the London ones.

I have been thinking of a more crocheted looking shawl as opposed to the blankety type.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 26 September 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

omg I just found out that H&M is opening a st louis store TOMORROW AT NOON.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 20 October 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I got my shorts! Also this amazing jacket from Topshop which hurrah hurrah was also available in Tall.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/lucyald/newcoat.jpg

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, I like that jacket. Military and asymmetrical.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I have discovered that asymmetrical works on teh bigger boobies because buttons don't do that straining thing. Also, it is the perfect length to cover up the wider bit of my thighs and give the illusion that they are really that thin all the way up. Perfect coat!

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's a good jacket! The militaristic ones in H&M this season aren't nearly as good, most of 'em are a bit meh except for this ridiculous jacket/trousers get up that looks tres Michael Jackson.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 21 October 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I tried on those trousers, the ones with the gold trim right up front? They rule. Too short on me once again, though they were kinda cropped on the mannequin and looked OK. Also I vowed not to drop $$ on trousers unless the fit is absolutely perfect.

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, me too. Same problem, everything there is too short. If they weren't all kind of boot cut or wide leg they'd be ok at the level of too short they are (too short to hit proper length vis a vis shoes, not short enough to look cropped), but I mean you look like a moron wearing wide legged pants at that length with shoes, like your shoes are totally disembodied.

I can't explain itbetter than that, I realize it makes little sense the way I just typed it.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

No, I know what you mean, if they are slim cut and a little short it can be cute, but wide leg, no way. I really wanted a pair of dove grey wide leg trousers that felt like they were made of kind of a washed silk (prob some poly blend) from the H&M at Tyson's, and there was no point in even trying them because at that length they'd look goofy instead of all Katharine Hepburn menswear style like I wanted. The regular sizes at Zara tend to run very long, so I've been going there. My friends who are average height complain about stuff being cut too long, but it's like, you can get it hemmed shorter no problem - hemming things longer if it's even possible usually shows and looks awful. (Oh waah, poor me.. ;)

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha I actually hemmed something longer because it was cuffed! Some GAP flannel dress pants...I undid the cuff myself and whoa normal uncuffed long pants, no sign of this event ever having occurred! Of course they are now too big for me and I have not found a similar style since :(

My aunt, who is over 6'0", said she orders her pants online from some store that offers completely unhemmed pants, and then gets them hemmed herself, but I have forgotten the name of this store. Though for some reason I'm thinking it's a division of Nordstrom's website???? Which means they are way too expensive for me (though I expected that to be the case with the sorts of things my aunt is willing to spend $$$$$$$$$ on anyway).

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

I pulled an H&M A-line brown plaid skirt of the closet today that I haven't worn in a few years. I put it on and it looked pretty good and I wondered why I never wear it. Got to campus and am walking around and I remember: because the skirt refuses to stay in one place, but creeps all around the waist, until the back part is on the side, so annoying. But then this guy in one of my classes told me that my outfit was "smokin' " and that it was a great skirt. Anyone else have problems with roving H&M skirts? My other skirts from them are more straight and tight so nonproblematic.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

*All* of my skirts rove, regardless of where they were bought.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

I have never encountered this roving skirt problem! Perhaps it only occurs in Scotland. My skirts stay put, but perhaps that is because my enourmous hips and beer belly pin them in place.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

i hate the slip-around. it seems to come from silk/satin-lined skirts worn with tights, or from ones that are slightly too loose.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

I have a real problem with skirt slip. Yanking at fabric bunching around your waist is so not a good look, but what can you do?

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

I have major roving skirt problems when I am carrying my shoulder bag briefcase thingy (which seems to be most of the time). . . the bottom of the bag hits at the waistline and as I walk shoves the whole skirt counterclockwise around my waist!

quincie, Tuesday, 1 November 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

If it's not too cold and the skirt's long enough I wear knee highs to limit the amount of slippage.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Aha, my huge work bag might be the culprit then.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Ugh I get that from time to time too. I have difficult times finding skirts that fit my proportions so they all tend to be just slightly loose in the waist (H&M's straight up and down tube cut strikes again). Which would be fine if they'd stay where I yank them to on my hips, but they start to A) ride up B) spin around! Possessed skirts.

Another "classic" is when your previously perfectly well behaved skirt when you wore it bare-legged takes a disliking to tights and starts bunching up every step you take.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

See, I get that bunching up/riding up thing when wearing tights a lot more than I get "roving" skirts.

The cure for that is Static Guard.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

See the thing is it's not static...it's the tights. Like if the fabric of the skirt or if you're wearing kind of old or cheap tights, they'll "catch" on each other. It's definitely not static though, I have no other way to describe it other than it's like the fibers get stuck together but NOT by static. It's weird.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Are you wearing velcro tights?

Otherwise, wear petticoats/slips. I have loads, I should wear them more often, under skirts rather than to bed.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I like H&M for their skirts in particular. I just pulled out some cold weather clothes this weekend and was sort of taken aback as to how many H&M skirts I have that I LOOOVE in plaids and corduroys. I can't do the pants though because they're so short and just bad over all on me.

Kittens Licking Cakes (coco), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

H&M pants are too long on me. :(

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

H&M jeans won't go round my thighs :(

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, for me they're too long AND create a hideous, ego-crushing muffin top. Who needs that? I'm all for skirts.

Has anyone ever had shoes re-soled? Resoled?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Muffin top! Ha ha, I thought AMP invented that term because it makes me laff so.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

It's so frighteningly appropriate, isn't it? It's not a spare tire, it's not a "love handle"...it's an unsightly little blob that pooches over my pants.

It's time for some new clothes, I think.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I hear burnt corn masks and lawn jockey outfits are all the rage, lately.

Remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone ever had shoes re-soled? Resoled?

Yup, a few of them. The trick is to take them in to a shoe repair place before they're too worn & unsalvagable. It's usually not too expensive.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I won't buy a pair of shoes if they don't look like they can't be. I get mine done on a fairly regular basis, but lyra is OTM, don't wear shoes once they've worn through the soles and you can get them resoled as easy as anything.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

My roving skirt comes with an attached silk-ish fabric slip inside--that must be the major culprit. I noticed my heavy tote bag also contributed to its movements. Plus, when I sat down in class the slip part showed past the skirt part, very uncouth-like. Also, I noticed in the mirror that there was a strange protusion in the back. I thought it might be an underwear gap but upon closer inspection, it is just that where the inner zipper of the skirt ends makes a bulge on the back of the skirt.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

Talking of skits; Very baggy skirt like trousers for men, anyone know where to start looking for things like this?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Mary, H&M's zippers are the most confoundingly poorly made things in the world. They are sewn in all wrong, and are lumpy, v. lumpy. I've never figured it out.

Boots with width fittings!!! Not the cheapest but they look really good quality http://duoboots.com/index.php

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 3 November 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Ah, excellent! Actually, I've seen them before - they do ads in Country Life so they must be aimed at fat middle aged biddies like me.

We might force K8 to change her name to Marie. (kate), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Re shoes being easily resoled: Is this also true of Dr. Martens? Mine are wearing through, and this is the first pair I've had that weren't lost/stolen by girlfriends before they reached old age.

Are there specialists for this? I'd hate to have to mail them off somewhere.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 3 November 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Stephen, it should be pretty easy, any shoemaker should be able to do this, just look around DC for a cobbler. You might want to ask around friends, if they've ever needed to get shoes resoled, to get a good recommendation, but I bet if you went online and just searched on it you could find someone with a good reputation.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help but, despite the fact that I need to get to a shoe person ASAP, I have not done my homework on this in DC and seem to be trying to hold out until next time I am in NYC.

The going out guru people at the Wash Post seem to have been taking questions on this - someone mentioned Best Foot Forward, by the World Market behind the Pentagon City mall. I plan to go there myself, my favorite boots & my Kenzo heels are looking rather the worse for wear these days.

I am also in need of trousers for work. Navy pinstripe, grey pinstripe, or some tweed or subtle plaid maybe. I am being all stubborn because I am between sizes and don't want to spend the $$ buying the larger size and having it tailored, also major vanity issue in play here. arrgh.

dar1a g (daria g), Thursday, 3 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Do you ever go to the Leesburg outlets, D? I got some tweed trousers from the Barney's store there once.

I am having another problem, that occurs with the wearing of knee socks + calf-high boots. One sock invariably drifts below the height of the boot, while the other stays up. It wouldn't be so bad if both socks disappeared, but I feel freakish with one high sock, one disappeared sock, and a roving skirt.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 November 2005 03:14 (twenty years ago)

No, but I should, where's that.. out route 7 past MacLean? I stopped in Tyson's Corner to look for a few things, and I'm going to get these nifty houndstooth trousers from le Benetton.. Bloomingdale's had a ton of shoes on sale & I got some nifty black heels, I am kind of wishing I could afford something wackier but at least Kenneth Cole shoes are mostly made for actually walking around the city in them.

I think I'm going to enjoy jumpers this winter. I just got a lovely red and whit fair isle and I searching up various Arran, North Ronaldsay, Guernsey, Cornish and Breton knits. I could do with some vest/tank top type things.

Ed (dali), Friday, 4 November 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

but mary, that's the perfect image of disarray.

youn, Friday, 4 November 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

d, i'm not sure exactly where it is, my mom took me out there the last time, but i will find out, bc i want to go again....

y, haha

I went to Lord and Taylors last night to try and find the boy blazer, but they didn't have anything, just some lame stuff from Ralph Lauren that didn't even have gold buttons. I saw on their website they have their own lable boy blazers, but not at the Landmark store at least.

Then I went out through Hecht's and they have the boy blazers by Van Heusen. However, the 16 is to big and the 12 fits but the sleeves are a bit short, and they 14 was only available in husky, lol pwned.

They did have a really nice selection (at l and t) of half-price cashmere sweaters, in all shapes and sizes. I got a blue and green argyle cardigan, as you can just never have enough argyle. I tried on a beige leopard print cashmere cardigan with diamante buttons, but alas, the sizing was a bit off.

Muffin top! Ha ha, I thought AMP invented that term because it makes me laff so.

I'm pretty sure the phrase was coined by these sartorially perfect people:

and for a none more perfect example:

The Rochas suit in this week's New York Times Magazine is terrific. That model is so pretty, too.

youn, Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

I have taken to wearing a wool scarf indoors, tucked into a cardigan sweater. My scarf is pink and my sweater is orange. My sister would probably put this in the same category as the hunting cap I tried on at the Barney's outlet store when I went to CA for winter vacation, but I feel regal, or like Mr. Rogers.

youn, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:21 (twenty years ago)

I love Rochas.. Uh, didn't I post something about that suit? how did it vanish? maybe I didn't post it.

I've been wearing a lot of black with dark navy blue. currently searching for lots of cobalt/electric blue tops, they are kind of hard to find. also bright spring green. and tiny polka dots. teh J crew has a navy blue swiss dot shirt which I quite like..

for spring I would like a nice white jacket. Fitted, 3/4 sleeve.

okay, describe to me this fall fashion people are disagreeing about in the "dress like an adult" thread.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Monday, 31 July 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

I know nothing of that, however I want it to be cold as friends are bringing me back a north ronaldsay jumper back from orkney this summer and I'm off to iceland in september and will surely bring back more arctic chunky jumper goodness.
