Most of it's water at first, so don't get too excited.

I've heard the Atkins diet isn't terribly good for you in the long term - muscles get damaged by the way weight loss ensues - really though, I think any diet that advocates extremes (eat no carbs! Eat no fat! Eat only grapefruit!) are a bit bunk, surely?

my sister is following this diet, and has lost a lot of weight over a period of about 6 months. thats fine, shes happy, but is soon to be returning to a 'normal' eating regime and im glad about that.
i agree trayce, anything that tells people to abstain from 'all of a certain food group or type' is a tad risky, especially in the long term. however, it seems that something like the atkins diet can assist a sleepy metabolism to get moving. the key is to keep it on track with healthier eating habits and by remaining mindful of what foods cause you to gain unwanted weight.

I don't like the way none of these diets say, "Take a ten mile bike ride every afternoon." THAT is the way you assist a sleepy metabolism.

The Atkin's diet was designed for very very VERY fat people, and should only be followed by same.

Are you having some good, healthy shits?

Honestly, I'm a meat-eater, and I can't think of anything more disgusting and faddish than that stupid diet.

It's such a cliche but nobody ever cares; the only way to effectively lose weight is REALLY exercise, like FOR REAL, and DON'T OVEREAT.

Yes! The one thing that amazes me abt people wanting to lose weight is they try everything EXCEPT the two most obvious - eat less, move more. I knew a woman who had her stomach stapled, and drank diet coke - but ate enormous amounts of CRAP and wondered why she was still fat. I mean, yeesh.

The Atkins diet is effective, and eventually you will be able to eat a wider variety of foods, but it is essential that you add carbs back into your diet carefully and gradually. It is a diet that demands meticulus analysis of carb consumption. For example, you can't eat nuts at first.

The Zone diet is similar but a bit easier to follow.

I thought they were the same thing!?

Anyway. I must say that for my anti-Atkins bleating I have to admit that from it, being more aware of carbs (and having been around a diabetic) I did become aware that a carb-heavy diet tended to mess with my ebergy levels. I'd eat, eg, fish and chips for lunch and be starving and low-blood-sugar-shaky by 4pm. I now try and eat less starch and more meat/veg as a balance and have noticed it works. However in my case, I am interested in diet for energy levels, not weight loss.

Me too, which is why the zone diet is good. You bal;ance insulin release due to eating of carbs with glucagon release due to eating of protein, and you feel "up" for hours.
