Why can't it be this lovely all year?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 29 September 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean besides this)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 29 September 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

do you really want me to start singing the Byrds?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 29 September 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, F*k that sh*t! I'm stuck here in the hell-hole of Central Florida, with nary an autumnal notion on the horizon. I want to walk through piles of leaves and smell the moist ground and go inside smelling of smokey fires and toast walnuts over the fire grate. And make stew.

It was 89 here today. Shorts and t-shirt weather and the A/C is still cranking along. It's wrong I tell you!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

it's beginning to get a little chilly here. in a month or so, the leaves will begin to turn and fall. the trains will slow down, because of the falling leaves (at least that's the excuse that NJ Transit and SEPTA always give for trains running late). but i love autumn too!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Monday, 29 September 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I made my first hotpot of the Autumn. And it was fabulous.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

44 degrees in Chicago, and I couldn't be happier. This will be the last couple of months when my winter Texas sweaters will be adequate.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn!!!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 29 September 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, sorry laura. me and tim were walking through an odd part of h*xton on saturday when we came upon a small square with a bandstand in the middle and LOADS OF LEAVES FOR CRUNCHING THROUGH. it was marvy. also i bought my annual bag of soup and broth mix and will be tracking down a nice ham hock for BROTHY GOODNESS soon.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 29 September 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

*grumble, grumble, grumble*

This is so bloody unfair! Soup? You bought soup fixings? GRrrrrr. I made soup last weekend, but it was cold potato/leek soup and I left the house while it was cooking on the stove and heating the place. GGGRRRRR. I must be attoning for some misdemeanor in a past life.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to turn the light on at 7pm last night because it was dark. I didn't liek having to do this.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

GGRRRRR.

Okay. I quit. I shall read this thread no more.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to turn the light on at 7pm

I know life is hard, and I know you hurt deep inside, and I know how sad you are. I've been there, too. But you'll be surprised at the wells of resolve you have inside you, and you will make it through this tragedy. I know you will. You're strong.

*hugs*

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Bought nice new 3/4 length coat at the weekend. My kicking-through-leaves-though-clearly-a-grown-up uniform is complete.

It's pretty nipply outside today.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Autumn. Yesterday I made a chicken soup and apple pie. I also took my sweaters out of the trunk and put them into the clothing rotation.

Eriik, Monday, 29 September 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This weekend I stocked up on more warm clothes. And when I went on my walk this morning, I had to wear a big button-up sweater. It was all very cozy.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Autumn weather -> chilly -> light jacket -> extra pockets -> My storage capacity has effectively doubled!

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, it's 62 degrees outside. Wow. And while today's high is expected to reach around 85 - 88 degrees, I'm incredibly pleased that the mornings are now going to be marked by temperatures so cool, I'll be more than able to manage with the windows thrown open.

This has actually exceeded expectations, btw. I thought for sure I wouldn't have to quit using the A/C until October 1, like how it's normally done. But... wow. I'm actually a bit chilly right now. I'm actually thinking of putting on a *gasp* sweater. *eyes widen*

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The past couple days for me have been pleasantly flavoured with hot cider and tea and cocoa and sweaters and surprise snuggles and bourbon and more sweaters and people going "brrrrr" and yelling "A'IGHT FUCK YOU TOO THEN SUMMER, GO THEN!" and 'why the hell are we cooking out in this?' and then it starts raining at the exact moment "Everything In It's Right Place" starts playing and [insert thread title here].

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I put on a jacket today for the first time since spring and found a lighter! Autumn has paid for itself.

That happened to me too! We were pummelled by falling leaves as we left the Brakhage festival last night. I screamed and ran for cover; I think he tried to catch them with his tongue.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm drinking tea!

Yeah, autumn is great. I really don't get the loving summer thing.

I drink 5 cups of tea a day.

It's supposed to be in the low 70s all week - AUTUMN HAS OFFICIALLY ARRIVED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

Fuck that noise. I want to wear sweaters and stuff, too

luna (luna.c), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a spare room y'know, and it's in the mid-50s here right now with the sun shining. ;-)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, but do you and L-dawg like dogs?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I am glad that I can wear my jacket again. My bandmate has knitted me an incredibly long scarf and I am excited about it. This should be a nice winter.

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Only big dogs. I may have gone on ILX record before as finding small yip dogs highly "puntable".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

As do I. I have dogs who look like brutes but are in fact terribly goofy puppies, both of whom love children.

Okay, figure out rent and I'm there.

Sounds like the massive doberman pinchers my maternal Granddad had, when I was younger. She looked ferocious next to a tiny 8 year old, but I couldn't wait to romp with her. Scared the crap out of my mum, though....

*squeal* THE Haikunym and his family, in my backyard?! Yay!!

Today was gorgeous. The first time I could drive around and not feel like I was going to turn into a human perspiration machine in... gosh, almost six months? The sky was cloudless. I feel perfect with just the ceiling fan going. Plus, winter's just around the corner.

I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!

Legendary Nothingness (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 29 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll miss Texas one of these days, probably. Come December, I'll be fondly remembering when we used to light the fireplace when it got down to (gasp!) 40 degrees outside. This will be about the same time I'll be worrying about mucus freezing in my beard.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 29 September 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have a beard. Does this mean I will have stalactites of mucus hanging off of my chin?

anthony easton (anthony), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

frisky? autumn? it's better than yer actual winter, but sheesh, ts dark evenings, cold mornings vs hottness and sun.

N_RQ (Enrique), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

NRQ, did you read the title of the thread? We love Autumn here. The brisk mornings! I hate heat. I like the cold.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

It rains more in summer and spring than autumn.

I love the oncoming of autumn. Once it's in full effect it gets a bit depressing until April.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

does it mark? on an inches per day count? it doesn't feel that way; or, it seems to rain in the morning rush hour (ie when it bothers me) in the autumn more.

N_RQ (Enrique), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

i like autumn too. this summer has gone on FOREVER, hasn't it? i thought summers were supposed to go by quickly.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

I think Summer was lacklustre here this year, I feel somewhat cheated. There will probably a heatwave in October anyway.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Cheated? It was BLISS! It was quite good here. No heatwaves or anything. I can't understand why people like a hot summer. You can't escape the heat. You get sweaty. You become lethargic. Especially at night it's horrid. But of course also during the day, especially people who don't shower enough so you can smell them from a mile away. I love autumn because you can dress accordingly. You can wear a sweater or a jacket. But in the summer even being nekkid is sometimes too much. ;-)

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

it's time for a change, so i'm happy to start feeling a breeze in the evenings. autumn is great, even when it's uncomfortable and windy. winter's okay too, but only up until new year's. after that, i think it's dud, too cold gray interminable.

carly (carly), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Here on Martha's Vineyard people have bumper sticker that say "Pray for Sept." Fall is good. The disgusting summer people have stopped throwing their money around and gone back to wherever they come from. You can find a parking place, and for a little while it's still warm enough to go swimming.
After Columbus day you can walk your dog WHEREVER you want, no beach-guards or caretaker goons to kick you off private property.
But the best thing about cool/cold weather is the sleeping!! It's nice to be in bed again, under all the blankies!! You can snuggle up to your co-sleeper without breaking into a sweat.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

co-sleeper

::weeps bitter tears::

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh I'm sorry! I didn't mean to make you cry!
Would you prefer "bedmate?"
The delicate chemistry of bed-sharing requires its own terminology. IN days of yore, many a spouse was not a bedmate. Twin beds, separate bedrooms...
Before my boyfriend and I got a place together I spent a couple of months sleeping with my best friend from college. She had only a twin mattress on the floor, and we had to sleep in a tight spoon-formation, holding on for dear life to avoid rolling off. We were better co-sleepers than my boyfriend and I were. He was a thrasher. Got rid of him.
Anyway, it was autumn, many years ago. Autumn in San Francisco, which is neither here nor there, you're just waiting for the rain to begin.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

No, I'm not weeping bitter tears over the terminology, just the reminder that I've not got one. I was avoiding such thoughts with pretty pictures of brocade shoes.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

im not an autumn fan at all - i love the summer, so much that i get so depressed when it's over - i think its some throwback to the schooldays when the autumn meant going back to school, PLUS i hate the holidays and it feels like autumn is just a prelude to fucking christmas cheer

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 15 September 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Fall is a weird mix in SF. After a 'summer' of lots of fog, we finally get a string of sunny days but they're rarely hot, usually breezy and at the same time, the signs of fall are becoming more apparent: leaves changing, sunlit hours becoming shorter, cooler nights...

autumn in the northeast is my favorite time here. too damn short though.

carne asada, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

northeastern u.s. has the best autumns, in my limited experience. u.k. gets too dark. southern u.s. is really just like a protracted summer, don't get enough of the nip in the air. but here you get the leaves, the pumpkins, the chilly nights and cool mornings, the apples fresh out of the orchard. corny, ok, but it's the time of year that most brings out whatever latent pagan nature-boy urges i have.

Great Scott! It's Molecular Man. (Ste), Friday, 2 October 2009 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

We have a conker tree just outside, we lined up all the ones that had landed on the balcony in the last couple of days since we last cleared it off and had about 30 of them. Not quite sure what to do with them except just chuck them off the side again.

(The other half jokingly suggested ebaying them and I am astonished to find that there are hundreds of conkers for sale on ebay already. Don't seem to be many buyers, however. Someone is selling them as "spider repellants", claiming "put one in a corner of your room and the spiders will stay away and it really it works". Given that the two things our balcony is not short of are conkers and spiders, err...)
