Is it true that in the old days, High School boys had to take swimming classes in the nude, while girls wore swimsuits?

I think swimming in the nude is a serious limitation on speed, for long hair a cap is used and likewise a speedo is used.

i found a speedo on the beach this summer. someone left in the dunes.

I heard it was in the US mainly in the northeast, and many High schools required boys to swim naked, it went on till the 60's, anyone who went to high school, in the 60's or earlier remember this practice?

I took swimming classes at a YMCA in the 50's, and yes we were required to swim nude. Girls could were suits during their classes, but were not allowed in the pool area while boys were taking class. However occasionally there would be a female staff member walking through.
