Proper Names In Songs

It's time someone blew the whistle.

I heard "Isabel" by Unrest for the first time today. Aware of this song since the mid-90s I had avoided ever listening to it for the obvious reason that it would most likely be rubbish and that it shares a name with my girlfriend, and I would end up cringing in vicarious horror. And so it proved.

Do you find it difficult to listen to songs which feature your name, or a friend/lover's name, and not think of you/that person? Has anyone ever played you a song with your name in expecting some kind of reaction, and how excruciating was it?

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

NB the reason I will be able to keep up my one-word thread titling thing on ILM for EVAH (or at least until Ethansday) is that I will post more difficult ones here.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

well, you see, the thing is, i'm apt to think of certain persons anyway, it doesn't need their name in it.

the winner in this category is 'Deirdre' by the beach boys. superb! there should be Barry, Lars and Marge too

gareth, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Coincidentally, the song "Hey Paula" by Paul and Paula evokes precisely the same feeling of nausea that a former ex of the same name inspires in me whenever I see her.

Trevor, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, I mean, I think of people when listening to songs, but if there's a proper name in the song then it might conflict with what I'm thinking about.

Actually the main thing that struck me about the Unrest song was how much she'd hate it, so I will play it to her and note down her reaction heh.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Alison by the Pixies always reminds me of my first proper girlfriend, not necessarily in a good way.

chris, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can't think of a single song with my name in it, so I've never had to worry about it. Yet. It would be very bad if there was, though.

Ironically the only friend I have with a really unusual/exotic name is the one I can think of with a song of the same name; but I don't think of her when I hear that song, maybe because I had heard the song before I met her and don't really associate it with her.

Nicole, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have to admit, I'd like that Velvet Underground song "Lisa Says" a whole lot more if it was a different girl's name. It's that line "Lisa says that she has her fun, and she'll do it with just about anyone." that spoils it for me. My sister's not like that AT ALL.

Trevor, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Too many songs featuring Suzy/Sue/Susan/Suzanne to count. AAAGH!

On the bright side, this may perturb exes more than it does me. The ones capable of writing their *own* songs about me have not used my name when doing so ;). And of course, it's a *big* mistake to do this song biz to a writer who is unafraid of using autobiographical material in an innovative way. One ex, the lovely James, had to contend with a shit band being named after him (the James: LAID posters out at the time were a laugh though).

Oh, and I loved Johnny Cash until I began school. Then I wanted to kill him for writing that song.

suzy, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Attempts at keeping shtum over certain liason proved to have failed one Sunday morning when housemates deliberately played House of Love's 'Christine' v. loudly. I'm with Chris on the wisdom of avoiding songs featuring 'Alison' (add Lemonheads + Costello). Good friend would get v. upset upon hearing 'Hey Jude'.

stevo, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

See Emily Play, A Rose For Emily, yadayada...

The ones that I really like are AC Acoustics- Emily, which is a bit scary and whispery and I'm coming in through your window to kill you when you sleep... and the line in A Picture Of Dorian Gray by the TVPs about "cucumber sandwiches made by Emily" which is nice, and completely removed from me (cucumber sandwiches? Feh, pass the vodka).

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Stevo, yeah, Alison's starting to happen, there's another that gets skipped over these days, hmmm

Just as well there's no songs featuring the other one.

fred solinger, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I used to bear a nickname of "Chanticleer" as a young'un, so I'd hear people singing: "His name was Chanticleer, what a handsome fellow..." etc. but I've never heard a song with "Kashif" in it.

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ahem. I believe several people here already know the sad tale of me being named after a certain Elvis Costello song that my mom really liked...It's always excruciating for someone to play that song for me.

There aren't any songs with names of my friends in them (if people can come up with songs named Manon, Ramon, Adi, Otis or Tamim I'd really be impressed - hell, I'd be impressed with Justin), and I can't think of one single song that even sort of sounds like my fiance's name. I mean, there's Michele by the Beatles, but I don't listen to that song, much less think of Michele when I hear it.

Ally, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

No points for anyone who points out that my sentence structure in that post was confusing and bizarre. I mean, reading it, it sounds like my fiance's name is Michele, which would be interesting but it's completely untrue.

Ally, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Jonnie appears in lots of songs, most excitingly the tale of when I was working on the docks and my gal Gina dreamt of running away due to career angst. Other than that my first and second were immortalised in the last Belle and Sebastian single. Bollocks.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am talking about real songs here, fred. Unless it was actually set to music it's just bad poetry.

Nicole, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've just thought that it was maybe Tommy in Livin' On a Prayer and not Jonnie. I must have swapped the two names around unwittingly in my youth and not realised until now. Bum, I guess that just leaves me with Belle and Sebastian and Chuck Berry.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think there may be Anthonys Song by Billy Joel which i have avoided but thats the only one i can think of.

anthony, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I don't even think what he wrote qualified as bad poetry, Nicole.

Anthony's Song! I forgot about that. If I didn't have Area Codes in my head right now, I'd have Anthony's Song in my head. "If that's movin' up then I'mmmmmmmm movin' out".

I am exhausted, sorry.

sara, it could be a lot worse, cf. jefferson starship, "sara."

fred solinger, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Also Sara (spelt wrong but pronounced right) by Starship which - when I was nine - I thought was the deepest song ever written (Storms are brewing in your eyes - yowsa).

Anyway I rather like songs with my name in it. On The Beat Pete by Madness is I think undisputedly their best song, and possibly the best false ending to a song evah. Whilst the album it comes from isn't so good, I even have a soft sport for The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC (though I'm sanguine at best about the version by the Crash Test Dummies + Bird on the Dumb & Dumber Soundtrack).

What about bands with your name in the title. Cf The Tom Tom Club, not to mention The Tom Ewings.

Pete, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Then again, you've got Fleetwood Mac's "Sara" which is seriously top drawer.

As far as Emily songs go, John Cale's "Emily" is pretty good, but the theme from Bagpuss towers above them all.

I got lumbered with a poxy Ian Dury and the Blockheads song, the lyrics of which NEVER got sung to me at school with tedious regularity. Oh no!

Trevor, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Also Sarah by Fleetwood Mac, much loved by one Simon Reynolds, sometimes of this twin parish.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can't think of any songs with my name in them, which is probably a very good thing.

Songs with proper names don't remind me of people I know so much as songs which just remind me of things people do. Or songs that are actually about people I know.

Ally C, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Lumme, I don't know either the Fleetwood Mac hit OR the Jeff Starship one EITHER.

But I have also remembered SARAH by the FAT TULIPS and twee may now strike me down.

However, NO-ONE knows the Fat Tulips. And EVERYONE knows que se- fucking-ra which isn't even my name but TRUE FACT is spanish for "will be" as the song goes on to point out and I have a suspicious feeling that I didn't realise that till far too late on in my life.

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Also Sarah by Thin Lizzy. In fact they had two songs called 'Sarah'. The better known one was a rocker and poor, but there was also a sweet early ballad usually titled 'Sarah (version 1)' about Phil Lynott's baby. I believe there is also a drippy song called 'Sarah' by the bedwetting Mojave 3. Don't ask me why I know all this.

And what have I got? 'Little Saint Nick' by the Beach Boys.

Nick, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I cannot believe you have never heard that Fleetwood Mac song. I will attempt to remedy this later.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I suppose it's appropriate that a song by the Tragically Hip (the Canadian Oas*s) opens with "Like everyone, I knew a Dave". Great line, OK tune.

suzy, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sarah, you lucky gal. There's also "Sara Smile" by Hall & Oates.

I like all Arthur songs. The Kinks' Arthur is tops of course. The Kinks love me and they want to help me, don't you know it? The Theme from Arthur is OK, too. I'm really feeling like I'm caught between the moon and New York City right now, let me tell you. Also, the John Cale song "Chickenshit" starts out with a weasely man screaming "My name's Arthur and I quit!" Chickenshit!!! My friends Nick and Howie would repeat those lines to me anytime I got flustered. It wasn't excruciating.

Arthur's my middle name, my first name is Tim, and there's this fabulous song about cannibalism in a mining disaster by the Buoys called "Timothy". "Timothy Timothy, Joe was looking at you/Timothy Timothy God what did we do!" Rupert "Pina Colada Song" Holmes wrote it.

I was hung up on a guy named James once, and would listen to that Bangles song over and over again. "Ooh, let me down do

I would also like to say that a nickname of mine has a great song named after it.

I am of course referring to my "Kipper Clarke" alias, and the wonderful theme tune that is "Kipper the dog".

The dog with a slipper.... that's kipper. Kipper the daaaaaawg... no he can do this! Do you think that you could! And he can do THAT! Which is more than any old cat could! Would you like a dog (jazz break!) like a doog, like a dooog (bliss out man!!), like a dog, like a dog, like a dog like Kipper?

You know, I bet JOSH would love the theme tune.

My parents used to play Goodnight Zachary by John Denver near Christmas time, I usually phased out before my name got on, it was John Denver after all. "Sarah's Black Pajamas" by The Bonaduces freaked me out as my Sarah had left for Japan for a few years and the song's Sarah kills herself. The Bonaduces are one of a long list of bands from Winnipeg that should have been much bigger if there were any justice in this world.

I made my friend a compilation tape of all the songs with her name in them. It took me about a year to find them all and it didn't sound corny because her name is one of those names that you just want to sing anyway! PS she loved it. Her name isn't common, by the way, but not obscure either. All the songs were pretty judiciously chosen by myself, and as well as the novelty of including her name they were just great songs.

I used to live with her and a mutual friend named a one off club night he did Anna's House. He didn't want to make the reference too obvious, but since we lived together Anna's house and Emma's house were the same place. 'Rhiannon' by Fleetwood Mac reminds me of my A-level English teacher. Oh, I've gotten the "Life of Brian" quotes a few times -- almost too little, actually. But "Old McDonald had a farm"? Oh, I NEVER get sick of that. OF COURSE NOT!

But I don't think there was ever a pop song or even modern/college radio rock song with "Brian" in it.

My grandparents bought me a Brian Brain EP one time as a gift... just because of the name. As it turns out, Brian Brain is some sort of Martyn Atkins pre-Pigface post-PIL project.. It was OK.

But see? That is why I fear of a world with a "Brian" pop song.

The one about calling people Al is by Paul Simon. Don't know what it's called. Maybe it's called "Call Me Al", I don't know. I never understood that song, I mean what does it mean? "If you be my bodyguard, I will be your long-lost pal, and I can call you Betty, and Betty when you call me you can call me Al." I mean, what kind of bodyguard is named Betty? And why is he calling Paul Al? And is "Al" so hard up for friends that he's begging his paid bodyguard to pretend to be his long-lost pal? It's nonsense if you ask me.

Hey, I think Sarah wins for most used name in a song!

Sarah Smile- Hall & Oates, Sara-Jefferson Starship, Sara-Fleetwood Mack, Sara- Bob Dylan, My Sarah- Thin Lizzy, Sarah- The Slackers, Sarah, Sarah- Jonathan Butler....And I'm sure there are more I haven't heard. It makes me feel so special.
