I heard "Isabel" by Unrest for the first time today. Aware of this song since the mid-90s I had avoided ever listening to it for the obvious reason that it would most likely be rubbish and that it shares a name with my girlfriend, and I would end up cringing in vicarious horror. And so it proved.
Do you find it difficult to listen to songs which feature your name, or a friend/lover's name, and not think of you/that person? Has anyone ever played you a song with your name in expecting some kind of reaction, and how excruciating was it?

Actually the main thing that struck me about the Unrest song was how much she'd hate it, so I will play it to her and note down her reaction heh.

Ironically the only friend I have with a really unusual/exotic name is the one I can think of with a song of the same name; but I don't think of her when I hear that song, maybe because I had heard the song before I met her and don't really associate it with her.

On the bright side, this may perturb exes more than it does me. The ones capable of writing their *own* songs about me have not used my name when doing so ;). And of course, it's a *big* mistake to do this song biz to a writer who is unafraid of using autobiographical material in an innovative way. One ex, the lovely James, had to contend with a shit band being named after him (the James: LAID posters out at the time were a laugh though).
Oh, and I loved Johnny Cash until I began school. Then I wanted to kill him for writing that song.

The ones that I really like are AC Acoustics- Emily, which is a bit scary and whispery and I'm coming in through your window to kill you when you sleep... and the line in A Picture Of Dorian Gray by the TVPs about "cucumber sandwiches made by Emily" which is nice, and completely removed from me (cucumber sandwiches? Feh, pass the vodka).

Just as well there's no songs featuring the other one.

There aren't any songs with names of my friends in them (if people can come up with songs named Manon, Ramon, Adi, Otis or Tamim I'd really be impressed - hell, I'd be impressed with Justin), and I can't think of one single song that even sort of sounds like my fiance's name. I mean, there's Michele by the Beatles, but I don't listen to that song, much less think of Michele when I hear it.

I am exhausted, sorry.

Anyway I rather like songs with my name in it. On The Beat Pete by Madness is I think undisputedly their best song, and possibly the best false ending to a song evah. Whilst the album it comes from isn't so good, I even have a soft sport for The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC (though I'm sanguine at best about the version by the Crash Test Dummies + Bird on the Dumb & Dumber Soundtrack).
What about bands with your name in the title. Cf The Tom Tom Club, not to mention The Tom Ewings.

As far as Emily songs go, John Cale's "Emily" is pretty good, but the theme from Bagpuss towers above them all.
I got lumbered with a poxy Ian Dury and the Blockheads song, the lyrics of which NEVER got sung to me at school with tedious regularity. Oh no!

Songs with proper names don't remind me of people I know so much as songs which just remind me of things people do. Or songs that are actually about people I know.

But I have also remembered SARAH by the FAT TULIPS and twee may now strike me down.
However, NO-ONE knows the Fat Tulips. And EVERYONE knows que se- fucking-ra which isn't even my name but TRUE FACT is spanish for "will be" as the song goes on to point out and I have a suspicious feeling that I didn't realise that till far too late on in my life.
And what have I got? 'Little Saint Nick' by the Beach Boys.

The Fat Tulips story
I like all Arthur songs. The Kinks' Arthur is tops of course. The Kinks love me and they want to help me, don't you know it? The Theme from Arthur is OK, too. I'm really feeling like I'm caught between the moon and New York City right now, let me tell you. Also, the John Cale song "Chickenshit" starts out with a weasely man screaming "My name's Arthur and I quit!" Chickenshit!!! My friends Nick and Howie would repeat those lines to me anytime I got flustered. It wasn't excruciating.
Arthur's my middle name, my first name is Tim, and there's this fabulous song about cannibalism in a mining disaster by the Buoys called "Timothy". "Timothy Timothy, Joe was looking at you/Timothy Timothy God what did we do!" Rupert "Pina Colada Song" Holmes wrote it.
I was hung up on a guy named James once, and would listen to that Bangles song over and over again. "Ooh, let me down do

I am of course referring to my "Kipper Clarke" alias, and the wonderful theme tune that is "Kipper the dog".
The dog with a slipper.... that's kipper. Kipper the daaaaaawg... no he can do this! Do you think that you could! And he can do THAT! Which is more than any old cat could! Would you like a dog (jazz break!) like a doog, like a dooog (bliss out man!!), like a dog, like a dog, like a dog like Kipper?
You know, I bet JOSH would love the theme tune.
ETHAN I don't know any songs with your name in them.

Brian - you mean "Brian The Snail" by Pigbag wasn't named after you? ;-)
As for me, I'm sure there was a song by a band like Kenickie or Huggy Bear or some such which mentioned a Jeff, albeit not in title. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Googling, I found Uncle Jeff by Arlo Guthrie, which I have never heard but looks cool, especially as I am an uncle. No Geoff(rey)s 'though. Ha!

But I don't think there was ever a pop song or even modern/college radio rock song with "Brian" in it.
My grandparents bought me a Brian Brain EP one time as a gift... just because of the name. As it turns out, Brian Brain is some sort of Martyn Atkins pre-Pigface post-PIL project.. It was OK.
But see? That is why I fear of a world with a "Brian" pop song.
