Wasn't there once a site that featured such crimes of humanity in one convenient place? Offer up the URL, Ye Gods of Thee IL Biznatches.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 3 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That was Mirsky.com, but he don't do that no more. *sniff* Someone else must be carrying the torch tho... out there somewhere.

For commercial offenses against good web design, there's always Web Pages That Suck. He won't go after personal pages, though.

I must say, at this point in Web history, the geocities page that is an assault to the very essence of design is kitsch classic isn't it? In a time when *everyone* is a designer I welcome the Cletus-es of the world.

My favorite quote re: "design"
If you call yourself a Designer, quit design, take up a new occupation (like tax auditor), buy some non-black clothes, normal- sized glasses, burn your AIGA card, and do design only as a hobby for awhile. Seriously.
This is from a senior designer at Webmonkey. And yes, I have myself held the title 'designer' from time to time. My current title is Creative Director. We'll save the knocks on that one for another thread. . .

The best exhibiter of webscum for a while was www.somethingawful.com but the very good folks behind it have been having server problems.

Also very worthy is somethingawful.com's related page, Jeff K's Home Page, which is the home den of the "3l33t Hax0r" Jeff K!

That Jeff K thing is 'da bomb', as they say.

The new Tangents layout annoys me, especially since the old design was so nice.

why the pointless frameset?

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 17 June 2004 07:00 (twenty years ago) link

another one of my bugbears - designers who don't understand html (i'm not aiming this at eithe of the above, the page just reminded me of some web design i was on the end of at work where the designer had used one giant table for things even though there were obvious splits for the top and bottom bars. as a result all the central fields were width="37" colspan="5" because of extraneous columns there to align button images)(the central table here was 17 columns before i changed it)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 17 June 2004 07:08 (twenty years ago) link

what frameset?

but whabout programmers who don't understand MAAAAAAD GRAFFICKS SKILLXO0RRRZ?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

Well the worst of all are programmers who think they are designers.

0r4l R0b3rt5 (ex machina), Thursday, 17 June 2004 11:35 (twenty years ago) link

> what frameset?

my point exactly! 8)

(just view source on link above)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:40 (twenty years ago) link

the frameset is because the domain is being redirected to webspace on another server!!

0r4l R0b3rt5 (ex machina), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:45 (twenty years ago) link

b-but you're only using one graphic (maybe two, one for the stripey background?) and you could just link those remotely like ile always does.

(and there's always meta refresh tag but that'd change the url in the address bar)

> but whabout programmers who don't understand MAAAAAAD GRAFFICKS SKILLXO0RRRZ?

they suck too 8) which is why you need bits of both. and there's the rub - people tend to be naturally skilled at one or the other, not both.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago) link

oh don't worry i know all too well :)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:48 (twenty years ago) link

dude, i don't have a place to host my domain other than on public webspace @ my school

Makes sense, that's essentially a subscription model for Adobe fonts - good move

The phrase 'Beautiful Cloud-Based Fonts' makes me feel all warm and fuzzy

Brakhage, Monday, 3 October 2011 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Thinking about it now I'd rather Myfonts would merge with those guys, guaranteeing an open market

Now that Google has moved into this space I think the only people paying for custom fonts on sites will be large corporate clients and designers

Brakhage, Monday, 3 October 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

i use typekit tbh
