is it nice to see that pockmarked skin and gappy teeth don't mean you can't be famous kinda?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:33 (twenty years ago) link

I don't really like him, anyway, but I went to the cinema with my mum and dad on my mum's birthday, recently, and we went to see the 'mystic river' and my dad made reference to something l fishburne's character said/did and then we went home and there was a prog on about the matrixes and l fishburne was on it and my dad said "laurence fishburne! is that his name?" and I said "yes" and something else that made my dad realise that it was l fishburne he'd just been watching in the 'mystic river' and then my dad said something that made me realise that he hadn't realised that and, boy, we laughed. I guess l fishburne is OK, actually.

Othello = "dude," or something.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:44 (twenty years ago) link

He's awesome!

He was only 14 years old when they started filming Apocalypse Now!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 3 November 2003 02:45 (twenty years ago) link

Personally, it's all about the King Of New York/Deep Cover/What's Love Got To Do With It troika.

Here's a photo of Sean Connery, right after seeing him play Jimmy Jump in King Of New York, calling Fishburne to announce that he's the man now, dawg.

Let's not forget his electrifying role as Ike Turner in 'What's Love Got to Do With It."

That was him? Wow, respect.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 3 November 2003 04:29 (twenty years ago) link

Dude, he got nominated for an Oscar for that role!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 November 2003 04:30 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, he was great in that.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 3 November 2003 04:31 (twenty years ago) link

allyzay, Monday, 3 November 2003 04:39 (twenty years ago) link

ed dill (eddill), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:20 (twenty years ago) link

yay cowboy curtis!

he is great, I think, though not so much in that last matrix movie, but really, who coulda survived that

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:25 (twenty years ago) link

I haven't seen it but I bet he comes off better than fucking Cornel West!

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:28 (twenty years ago) link

actually he does not

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:37 (twenty years ago) link

damn. But he hasn't recorded a "rap" album, so he still wins.

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:39 (twenty years ago) link

I'd buy that for a dollar!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:41 (twenty years ago) link

even if the Neptunes produced that shit, it would suck.

hstencil, Monday, 3 November 2003 06:43 (twenty years ago) link

if fishburne did a rap album in character as morpheus I would just die

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:46 (twenty years ago) link

what if morpheus found true love in a wacky spinoff 'romcom'!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:47 (twenty years ago) link

a spinoff of the album?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:47 (twenty years ago) link

it would be good if he covered lauryn hill's "zion" on this hypothetical album

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:48 (twenty years ago) link

no, the movie!

it could be called 'the matrix of the heart, actually'

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:49 (twenty years ago) link

it's too bad the machines didn't track lauryn down and stop that unplugged taping.

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 3 November 2003 06:58 (twenty years ago) link

Total career highlight = the bit where he says "I think we've seen enough!" in 'Event Horizon'

dave q, Monday, 3 November 2003 11:27 (twenty years ago) link

He's kinda plump in mystic river -- and one of the only falses note in that movie, excluding that terrible scene where tim robbins pretends to be crazy.

also there should be a single called "on this night"

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 3 November 2003 20:55 (twenty years ago) link

It could be a duet with Clay Aiken.

Nicolars (Nicole), Monday, 3 November 2003 20:59 (twenty years ago) link

Timbaland ft. Othello & Clay Aiken "On This Night" (Everyone Who Lives In Zion Is a Bootylicious Reveller-Hippy remix [isntrumental])

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 4 November 2003 02:43 (twenty years ago) link

How he can be all serious and dignified like Sidney Poitier......and then be Ike Fucking Turner and play a total bugfuck psychopath.
Great acting range.

I assume all you muthafuckas have never seen King Of New York or else we'd be seeing a LOT more Jimmy Jump references.

I would love for someone to explain to me what is wrong with being a porn actress?

I've always looked for a job where I could do something I love, get paid a living wage at it, and not grow to hate the job eventually.

If any woman believes she has found that kind of job working in the porn industry, more power to her.

"Chippy D"

Why bother now. Everyone in the world knows now, including daddy.

How sad. How sad that there are young women growing up who will emultae her for having emulated the no-talent bi-mbo Kim Kardashian.

Feminism, despite it's contemporary state, has been set back decades because of this stuff. The Snookis. The Octomoms. The Parises. The Britneys and Lindsays. The Kardashians. And now this. Just for notariety, infamy, attention, and most of all money.

Guess there really is a price for everyone to compromise themselves for.

How sad for us all.

Montana Fishburne, daughter of Laurence Fishburne, is glad her father's cronies weren't able to stop the release of her porno tape -- telling TMZ, "I want people to see my movie."

TMZ bumped into Montana yesterday in L.A., where she said she was "surprised" that her dad's pals tried to buy up all her XXX DVDs from Vivid Entertainment for a million bucks -- but was "happy" they failed because she says, "I want people to see it. I want people to buy my movie."

On a different note, Montana also said, "I want my whole family to be proud of me in anything I do" ... whether she was "a doctor" or a porn star.

i've been watching csi all the way through, mostly just for research and to have something to watch, it's kind of not that good, but it has some small tv craft to it and it gradually gets more watchable several seasons in - and once william petersen (who was doing quite well with pretty mediocre writing) leaves and they slot fishburne in, there's like this real step up in quality! which is weird for a tv show. his presence is just different, he has more of a touch. and after his 'hannibal' role it's noticeable that he's actually in character as the doctor-professor-newbie csi, kind of reserved, modest, waiting for other people to take the lead so he can learn from them. even in the way he listens to witnesses, his reaction shots etc.

i don't know if they changed staff or made some different production decisions - seems like there's a lot less of the blatant soundtracked-lab-montage filler than there had been - but there's definitely a shift in the tone/perspective because fishburne's character replaces petersen's, but not as the new head of the lab, so suddenly the focal character's status as focal is more tangible since most of the other stuff is only adjusted slightly to make up for grissom's departure. i wonder how often that happens in long-running tv production.

he's been great on hannibal!
