talking like you're 12 when you're pushing 30: c/d?

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

In my experience, it is not unusal for 50 year olds to act like they're 12. In relatively benign situations, acting like a kid is classic, surely?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

something about the statement itself just bugged me. i mean, have some fucking dignity you're wearing a suit.

goato mountington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

RJG (RJG), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think if the person is appropriately endearing and/or charismatic then they can get away with this. If not, then dud.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 10 November 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Another straightforward instance of a UQOTOM [universally quantified one to one mapping] is reduplication. Reduplication, or immediate repetition, is found in pluralization (for example, in Indonesian the plural of buku ("book") is buku-buku and even in syntax, as Ghomeshi, Jackendoff, Rosen, and Russell (1999) have recently pointed out, with examples such as, "Are you shopping, or are you shopping-shopping?" meaning, roughly, "Are you shopping casually or seriously?" (Dear reader, are you just reading this, or are you reading-reading it?) -Gary Marcus, The Algebraic Mind: Integrating Connectionism and Cognitive Science, p. 38

Some aspects of life are straight out of junior high school. Coincidentally or not, those are the aspects of life at which I am least adept. On some level, no matter what our age or achievements, we are either sitting at the Cool Table or would be scorned if we attempted to do so.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)
