That stupid looking baldheaded guy "seems" to have the answer for everything----note the quotation marks on the word seems.....I think he is a fraud and has no idea of what he is talking about...he has all the old people snowed....your opinions?

David Beeson, Friday, 14 November 2003 05:23 (twenty years ago) link

I think he is into something...i just don't know what.....

Jake Plummer, Friday, 14 November 2003 05:23 (twenty years ago) link

We need to deal with that John Edwards guy from Crossing Over first. Making people think they're talking with dead relatives is much worse than anything "Dr." Phil does.

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:26 (twenty years ago) link

haha i thought of john douche edwards too

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:27 (twenty years ago) link

B-b-b-but HE really does talk to the dead?!?!?! (At least according to a gullible friend of mine, he does.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:28 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah that Edwards guy is weird...but I think I could do his job...he just kinda guesses and uses generalities...(is that a word?)...LOL...he should be locked up in Leavenworth.

David Beeson, Friday, 14 November 2003 05:30 (twenty years ago) link

Its called cold reading and it has been widely shown how it can be done. It's about as psychic as my goddamn toe.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:33 (twenty years ago) link

*sob* your toe told me i was going to find fame and fortune!!!

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:34 (twenty years ago) link

Woohoo!

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:49 (twenty years ago) link

I now have a picture of detatchable toe in my head, flying off to save... something.

I don't know if Dr. Phil's a fraud, but I do know I no longer care to watch his program because his show's gotten so gimmicky, so NOT "getting real", so VERY "oh let's just stick the whole family on the program in a massive feat of nepotism", and so VERY, VERY exploitative and smarmy and I hate how he turned his committment to helping people lose weight into a sleazy pull for "reality TV"-like ratings, book sales, and sales of that stupid-ass "nutrition bar". And I'm eternally grateful during those times when I'm able to watch TV in the afternoon that Ellen DeGeneres' talk show is directly opposite Dr. Phil's, because that means YAY I can watch ELLEN!

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 14 November 2003 06:00 (twenty years ago) link

Dr.Phil is a good doctor. I think he gives people good advice. But then again, almost everyone who comes on the show is a total twit.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 14 November 2003 13:51 (twenty years ago) link

phils no fraud. he's a genuine entertainer. i laugh and laugh at his show but find he was more effective as just a guest of oprahs.

if you think yer gonna get the answer from daytime confessional tv, and phil is a fraud cos he might not provide it, i think you might just have a problem

gaz (gaz), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

Dr.Phil woiuld be more effective if he were nude on the show.

Mike Hanle y (mike), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

Hanle y OTM, yes.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

indeed, but surely dr phil + oprah bukkake would be even more entertaining.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Friday, 14 November 2003 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

OTM? On the Move?

Mike Hanle y (mike), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:50 (twenty years ago) link

OTM? On the Move?

On The Money or On The Mark.

However I do strongly believe that The Move gives better advice than the pop-psych mad libs that fraudulent twit Dr. Phil Real Last Name Unknown spooges out.

Dr. Roy Wood, my life is a mess, I can't sleep at night, and I can't relax at all!

Dr. Roy:
I heard the flowers in the breeze make conversation with the trees
Believed to leave reality behind me
With my commitments in a mess my sleep has gone away depressed
In a world of fantasy you'll find me.

I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain
Feel the power of the rain making the garden grow,
I'm just sitting watching flowers in the rain
Feel the power of the rain keeping me cool.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 13:37 (twenty years ago) link

Dr. Jeff Lynne, my parents think I'm a failure and won't speak to me anymore. What can I do?

Dr. Jeff:
"Can you believe no one has called anymore since the ball that was
thrown in the spring
Brother, beware,
Nobody dare anymore since the days back when balls were the thing

Open up said the world at the door

Swimming around out in the hall
In the ground til she finds what she lost years ago
In a nightdress, dirty old vest, she never rests,
But the old folks at home never know"

What?

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

I think i would be a good advice columnist.

DEAR HANLE Y: I have been seeing a girl for nearly a year. We are getting serious. She comes over to my house all the time and has met my parents. We all get along really well. The problem is, she will not allow me to meet her parents. I feel as if I am a big secret. What should I do?

TEEN IN LOVE (eater), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:11 (twenty years ago) link

Dee- i watched ellen's show the other day. i think that her performance in "finding nemo" and this new show has cemented her place as america's most beloved lesbian.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

Dr. Phil and John Edwards are both idiots. If their followers fall for their bullshit, they deserve whatever happens to them.

Emily's post on November 15 = totally OTM.

I don't know why I hadn't seen it until now.

mabel, please explain your puzzlement.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 07:01 (twenty years ago) link

Side note-people, the psychic who talks to dead people is John Edward, sans "s". John Edwards is running for president, and as far as i know, is not a medium.

I saw Dr Phil drunk in a bar in Aspen once. He was by himself, and looked very much in need of a friend.

My roommate and I continued to play shufflepuck and, eventually, Phil left, alone.
