Banks of New York

So um any suggestions as to where I should open up an account? They all pretty much have free checking & online bill pay & credit-debit cards, don't they?

There's this Wachovia that opened up near my parents and it looks pretty posh... so posh that when I looked at their webpage, it says you can "APPLY" to open an account there. I think that means people with meager income and soon to have lots of school debt need not apply.

i'd suggest either commerce or washington mutual. i do business banking at the former and personal at the latter, and have thus far encountered no problems and great service with both.

I bank at Bank of NY. The service has been good (ie., they've never screwed anything up), but they don't have a lot of ATMs. If it wasn't such a hassle to switch, I'd switch to Citi or Chase. Those are pretty much the only two choices if you want to have easy ATM access without paying the annoying $1.50 each time.

Yeah I'm thinking I might just go with Chase... for the ease of access reason & since I'll be moving in the next few months or so.

I think Chase and Citi might have mandatory minimum amounts, but I'm not sure. I recently opened an account with Washington Mutual, and they seem pretty decent (although they don't have enough ATMs in Brooklyn).

I use Citibank. Don't. They suck.

four years pass...

if people are looking at banks, this list by metro area market share might be useful. people looking to put some money away and earn a good rate while caring less about ATM ubiquity might consider a state-supervised institution like Apple, Emigrant Savings Bank or Ridgewood Savings Bank.

charles schwab only has one branch reimburses all atm charges, but i think they only have one location in nyc? it might be a problem if you have to make cash deposits.
