When did we ever get rid of the stubby?

Someone tried to tell me they went as long as '88.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

We still have those, though we don't call them stubbies. I think the Australians might, though I may be imagining this.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(note that is seriously NOT AN ENDORSEMENT of that website/publication)

I miss Pilsner. They used to make it right here in Regina, but Molson, being evil, shut down the local brewery and now we get Pil and Boh from Edmonton or some shit. Which is bullshit! I mean, the only reason we drank the shit was because it was local.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Stripe still uses them.

They are not an attractive shape for beer bottles. Or anything else.

fuck snotrag, get us some talls

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Brick still uses them but when did Molson and Labbatt's make the jump?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that people of my generation (i'm 26) fetishize stubbies, because we got to see people drinking from them, but never got (at least not properly, sips from dad don't count) ourselves.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just one more thing to hold against our fathers.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Im just wondering because of Bob and Doug thread and the recent conversation. I never remeber Molson's being in stubby form past the early 80s. I had a beer bottle cap collection of about 100 different types (mostly various Blue and Exports) growing up but I don't remeber when they went out.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i picked up a 6pack of Mickeys "shorts" just last year
feel the sting !

kephm, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume this is a canadian thing? I am 24 and have never seen anyone drink a stubby. Other than Red Stripe.

fletrejet, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My least favorite thing about stubbies is that I can't hold them easily between my fingers when playing beerflutes like I can with tallboys. Otherwise, they got beer in 'em, thus I like 'em.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, totally canadian. we cling to the flimsiest trifles that we think differentiate us from, uh, those guys next door.

anyone else see the story on the front page of the Nat'l Post saying that Americans think Canadians are too patriotic?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i found mine about 2 hours north of boston on the MA/NewHampshire border.

stubbies make better weapons than tall boys heh

kephm, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

All come to Britain where there are boxes of squat 275ml lager bottles galore and tall 330ml ones too and we haven't even bothered to make up nicknames for them!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

*Dan attempts to post but is overtaken by his inner 12-year-old and resumes uncontrollable giggling*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't plastic beer bottles 'stubbies'?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I call them stubbies, often very good value. Sheperd Neame's Spitfire in stubbies is a great thing.

Ed (dali), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't um, circumcised penises stubbies?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

speak for yourself, Huck

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that what we talking about??

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't really small toes "stubbies"?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha these recent revelations makes my "beerflute" post so much drrrtier

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ask N.

haha x-post

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

in college we would drink mickey's hornets (but pronounce them "or-nays").

also, lucky lager (with the puzzle caps!) made cases of 12 11oz. bottles... it was really like an 11 bottle case. i then coined the term "a lucky dozen" = 11.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i am pretty sure olympia beer comes in stubbies still.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha "comes in stubbies"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah "beer" was the nickname of my nextdoor neighbor

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

fuckin hell.

raphael diligent (Cozen), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally Canadian!? Gads, stubbies are common as pigshit here, and we have "stubby holders" for yer beer - those foam wraparound things so you dont get cold hands.

http://sg.yimg.com/xp/lplanet/australasia_and_pacific/australia/darwin/image4.jpg

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

we also have twisties, which are a wee bit smaller and also known as throwdowns.

also we have these disgusting shorts called stubbies which are really just hot pants for middle aged men. when yer dad squats down - chewing on a bit of straw usually - to tell you something meaningful, you don't know where to look.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

also Trayce i think stubbie holders are to keep yer beer cold, not yer hands warm.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

is that jim in the background of that picture?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

t.h.i.r.s.t.y. n.o.w.

kephm, Monday, 8 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

gaz you're mean!!!

i love stubbies. a party in every bottle

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

stubbies of the shorts variety should be wiped out

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry jim,
you know i always thought stubbies was a strictly aussie term. how sheltered i am.
do they come in slabs elsewhere too?

gaz (gaz), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i drank the slab and the slab won

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i think whoever actually makes Olympia now shut down the stubby line, though old ones still exist here and there.

they used to have those picture puzzles that formed sentences under the caps, what are those called? ahh, the memories, sniff.

pantalaimon (synkro), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

stubbies are only good if you can find lots of them, one just doesn't satisfy. you need at least 5 before you even feel anything. and mickey's are the best!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck snotrag, get us some talls
Bring on the foxy bitches!
