The controversial Zoe Williams there -- she's 32, resolving a minor query from yesterday.
'... [F]or various reasons that could be swept under the broad umbrella of "it was raining".' 'Umbrella of "it was raining"' -- can an editor tell me if that's good or bad prose?

Anyway the point in hand is whether the voting age should be lowered. Until teenagers stop listening to The Libertines I think it should be raised, but I'm open to suggestion.

I'm 16 years old. I pay taxes, can have sex and can even die for my country. So why can't I drink alcohol in pubsvote?

Aja to thread.

How many 16 year olds, these days, earn more than 4 grand?

A US question: how old do you have to be to

a) buy a gun
b) vote (harharhar 'vote')
c) have sex

in the States?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, a and c vary from state to state, but b is 18.

No representation without pornography!

haha, so, I was closer to her real age w/ 36 than the person who suggested 26. maybe I do know who she is, after all.

I think her umbrella is OK.

what's your problem?

My problem is fer another thread. I wasn't sure about the brolly line, whether it works or not. I need professional advice.

The difficulty with any voting age is that it is necessarily arbitrary. This was born in on me with especial weight when I turned 18 and became eligible to vote on the day following a presidential election. This happened during the first presidential election ever conducted where the voting age was 18 (Nixon vs. McGovern), so the arbitrariness was doubly evident.

Yes. Yes, I am that old.

this is one of those threads which makes me want to regurgitate discussion we had in our History Of Political Thought class in University.

I WILL RESIST.

I think it's more ridiculous that in some states (and provinces) you don't get full citizen rights immediately upon turning 18. Like basically where the legal drinking age is 19 or 21 (any 20s?), they're saying, "drinking booze is a more serious responisibility than participating in democracy."
