drink a lot of water and throw up as much as possible. i've been through this a lot an all you can do is wait it out

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:00 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

yes, keep up the fluids because you can easily become dehydrated. peppermint or ginger tea can help settle your stomach, and plain rice is good if you need to eat something. rest as much as you can, since it's a physically stressful ailment.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:09 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Yeah, you can dehydrate a lot quicker than you think. I had food poisoning about this time last year. It's just wrong what the body can do.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:14 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

the worst part is i feel like i'm STARVING

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:15 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I had to induce.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:15 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

ugh, it's such a crappy feeling. the worst is the slow feeling coming over your body that you are going to vomit. you get very hot and restless, then you finally throw up, and then you lie on the cool bathroom floor and it's like the best feeling in the world.

then two minutes later you start to feel sick again.

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:17 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

Can you eat pretzels?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:20 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

things that are easy to digest when you have an unruly stomach: rice, yogurt (but not other dairy products), bananas

don't eat anything with iron in it, as stomach-flu inducing germs feed on it, this is one of the reasons you puke

I was told of the B.A.R.T diet... bananas, applesauce, rice and toast. Or bourbon, aspirin, Razzles and tacos, I can't remember.

Flat Sprite/7 Up (no caffeinated soft drinks). To rehydrate and get some sugar into your system.

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:59 (fourteen years ago) Permalink

I got really annoyed this time last year because everyone I knew was off work, or sick with what they termed "food poisening". Come on people - it's the flu if every single person in the office has caught it in turn! I forget what its name is, but there is a very common 24-hour vomiting/nastiness flu that goes around every year - it often makes the news after it affects a cruise ship. Not saying that you don't have food poisoning btw. Eat Jell-o. Rehydrate!

I just ate a sandwich/wrap left over from a seminar yesterday. It had been refridgerated, but the last bite tasted a bit off. Maybe because it was more wrap than meat, but now I'm worried that I will be posting some actual stanzas in "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." - The Lost Stanzas

stop being a wuss. last night i was drunk and ate this pork that was a week out of date (and out of the packaging). it smelled very.. porky but i masked the smell with blackbean sauce, and cooked it to hell. the only ailment this morning was hangover.

maybe I should get teh drunk.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:29 (twelve years ago) Permalink

well yeah, alcohol kills germs. and also being drunk is fun

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:34 (twelve years ago) Permalink

it is EXTREMELY unlikely that a day-old sandwich (one that's been refridgerated) will make you ill.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:36 (twelve years ago) Permalink

Yeah, but it tasted kinda nasty.

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:37 (twelve years ago) Permalink

geyser muffler and a quarter (Dave225), Thursday, 9 June 2005 14:39 (twelve years ago) Permalink

if one of the ingredients was bad to begin with, then it could make you ill. but otherwise, properly kept (or even improperly kept, really) food won't spoil overnight.

Waht's the SUREFIRE way to get over this in 48 hrs, before I go away for the weekend? When do I know I can move beyond eating rice?

(no puking, just the other. I stupidly ate the "OK parts" of a bad apple on Monday.)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 21:06 (nine years ago) Permalink

Surefire? Not possible. But a few hints...

Yeah, drink a lot of water
You need to eat but you will probly puke (and the rest)
Painkillers, antacid etc.
If there's one hint I'd say, eat what you feel like - don't worry about nutrition, just whatever appeals. In my experience you're likely to keep it down.

Hope your weekend away doesn't revolve around food because it won't be high up on your favourite things for a while!

Treblekicker, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 23:14 (nine years ago) Permalink

one month passes...

My husband was saying my bowels made such awful noises during the night.

I lost three kilos. SIGH. Not throwing up, only, y'know,... the runners. Urgh.

stevienixed, Sunday, 2 November 2008 19:34 (nine years ago) Permalink

Also, you don't know what it is: poisoning or stomach flu. Both have teh same symptoms. And what does it matter? In a couple of days it's (hopefully)- over. Take some Immodium Instant. (Which we didn't have during the weekend.) I only took Interol.

stevienixed, Sunday, 2 November 2008 19:35 (nine years ago) Permalink

Four kilos actually.

stevienixed, Monday, 3 November 2008 12:22 (nine years ago) Permalink

How much is a kilo? I lost half a stone last week.

And now, just when I thought i'd kicked it, the sodding thing is BACK.

Do any of those over the counter remedies actually work? I've always been taught to just sweat it out.

I thought it was a virus, but seeing how it's come back about 24 hours after eating very similar meal to what I ate about the same time period before the last one... I'm beginning to wonder if something in my fridge that I';m taking for granted is seriously off.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Monday, 3 November 2008 12:43 (nine years ago) Permalink

here they recommend immodium (which stops the runners) and also enterol (which restores bowel flora (this is how we call it anyway)

i feel like utter shite. i'm hanging on the counter trying not to faint when serving customers. hard job to do.
the other day in a shop i srsly thought i was gonna faint. but i asked for the loo and had a sitdown for a couple of minutes.

stevienixed, Monday, 3 November 2008 15:19 (nine years ago) Permalink

btw four kilos is almost nine pounds. yep, NINE POUNDS. this is not really how i wanted to achieve my weight goal. hahaha

stevienixed, Monday, 3 November 2008 15:20 (nine years ago) Permalink

Food poisoning is the best calling-in-sick lie.

rubisco (Abbott), Monday, 3 November 2008 21:07 (nine years ago) Permalink

I also lost quite a bit of weight from a minor case of food poisoning. Perhaps as much as 7 or 8 lbs. In the past few years, I've kept slim because of two things 1)had my appendix out & didn't eat hardly anything for about days, and 2) food poisoning (possibly caused by eating a slice of pizza after not washing my hands after working on my motorcycle and having grease, oil and gasoline on my hands). When you do get better from food poisoning, food tastes SOO AWESOME and you only want to eat great, healthy organic foods like fruit and grains and really safe stuff, and not processed junk and meats. In the long run, make this a reason to eat healthier and safer.

I booked a band to play my Dj night last sunday. Singer showed up with food poisoning. He slept in the corner until it was his time to play. Then jumped up and rocked out. Then went home.

I was seriously impressed.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 August 2009 02:49 (eight years ago) Permalink

Immodium is great but sometimes it's better to just let it flush out. Especially for children: before the age of six, no immodium as otherwise the bacteria stay inside the bowels.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 21 August 2009 07:33 (eight years ago) Permalink

I just want to EAT again. Four days of Gatorade & saltines is enough.

Indiana Morbs and the Curse of the Ivy League Chorister (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 August 2009 12:39 (eight years ago) Permalink

Immodium's like quick drying cement and messes you up for days. Fuck that shit.

Or, fuck that! Shit!

I had the "shitters" for about a week during my pregnancy. Thank god it wasn't a "run for the loo" thing though.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 21 August 2009 13:07 (eight years ago) Permalink

So I'm not sure if this is food poisoning or not. I've had food poisoning a few times and I know how much it wrecks my guts.

But so far my stomach only ever hurts every now and then and it's in a very specific spot 2 inches above my belly button. I don't ever really feel nauseous but the big D just keeps coming. I assume the headaches, muscle aches, and occasional dizzyness are just side effects from dehydration? I'm going on day 3 now and hoping it disappears by tomorrow.
Do I have swine flu?

my stomach felt like it was playing "Putnam's Camp" by Charles Ives during the night. I was really nervous cuz a friend of mine had a stomach virus recently and I was afraid I got it. in a condo-esque hotel, so I had nothing I could take as the lobby is a mile away.

fortunately it was mild, but like, are there any good natural remedies for this (sour stomach) in situations where I can't get antacids/other products?

Argh. My wife and I were both struck on Monday night what we suspect was food poisoning from something we ate on Sunday. I hate the fact that this afternoon I'm *still* feeling spacey and sluggish and without much appetite. Get better, self!

This is a useful thread, thank you ILX.

1. Peppermint tea is not good for your stomach, it is an irritant. Ginger is good.

2. Has anybody tried Flagyl? My doctor friend has recommended I take it. It is a gentle antibiotic that she says has positive pro-biotic side-effects.

3. Do not eat whole roast suckling pig.

psyllium husks are very useful for bad stomachs, will help both runs & constipation.
Not sure where you get them from easily elsewhere than Galway. Think I've looked in London before and not found hem as easily.
Here they're in the health food shop in bags for something like €1.29 or €2

Stevolende, Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:17 (five years ago) Permalink

Are we talking food POISONING, eating spoilt food...or just a condition like gas or constipation? Because food POISONING, well, even if it isn't that severe, get that checked out!! Seriously, you might end up in a coma or WORSE.

I got food poisoning once on a stuffed mushroom and it was hell. Usually your whole body is involved. I thought I was going to die. It was on Thanksgiving. My family got me some type of sedative, like a Tylenol PM because I was vomiting so much and my fever was very high.

I don't know what I would take, but something to help you rest and lots of water if you don't see a doctor.

Ironically, the only milk I have trouble digesting is COCONUT MILK which c'mon you aren't even milk, why u gotta play me like that.

This flaw in my otherwise iron-clad GI system made travel in Sri Lanka a bit dicey, because there is delicious coconut milk in basically all of the delicious curries. After a while I worked it out so that I could be like "OK well if I eat this curry now, I should be OK for the 3:00 p.m. train."

Oatmeal is dead easy then. Don't get that microwave crap in packets; even regular "old fashioned" oats are microwaveable. 1.75:1 water to oats ratio (ymmv), pinch of salt, nuke three minutes; add a spoonful of butter, splash of milk, sweetener of choice, handful of dried fruit.

Brat diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. But I also recommend psyllium husk which will help absorb liquid. Which you should be drinking a bunch of, regardless.
