You know.. things you own in a state of disrepair that you haven't quite gotten around to mending yet.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Friday, 12 December 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

rhodes chroma synthesiser.
tla valve equaliser.
oberheim 'cyclone' arpeggiator.
e-mu proteus 2000 synthesiser.

The 1st is going to be expensive, but it's the one I really need to get done. It's got loads of little things wrong with it, and it'll all add up.

Oh, I forgot - Saab 900:

Broken driver's window

l/h wing mirror broken
dent in r/h front wing

nickalicious stole my answer! I too was going to say "brain" (or "brane" as the case may be) in this thread. But aside from that and certain elements of my ancient, groaning computer, everything else seems to be working fine. Thankfully.

We have this stupid contraption under out kitchen sink that holds our garbage container so it can slide and out of the cabinet. I too zealously shoved some trah in the container a week or two ago, and inadvertantly (sp?) bent the rails that it slides back and forth on. Tried to mend the damage with some pliers, but it now requires a bit of force to get it back in and out of the fuckin' cabinet.....and I feel like a stoopid jackass as a result.

My tape player doesn't play one way, luckily it reverse plays good.

The headphones I found sound great but they are splinted because the plastic part broke.

I scavenged two nice, new, expensive pairs of leather steeltoe boots from a store that was dumping overstock or something, but they were slashed up the sides so nobody would take them by the greedy fucks. Luckily they are so good and sturdy I can repair them as soon as I get sewing stuff.

Some of my dishes I just packed up.
My brain but I'm moving tomorrow so it will get better.

My furnace is toast. Seeing as how I live in an 80 year old house and the old one was vented into an unlined chimney the new one is going to run me about 4 grand including all the new duct work. Merry Christmas Mr Furnace man, get your kids something nice for me.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

A friends keyboard, the power jack is losse I opened it up and soldered it back, but it's just such a crapy connection that it still barely stays on.

My adaptor for my minidisc recorder, the cable was sliced I'm going to solder that back together, but it'll be hard to get a good connection. (I was going to try and buy nother one, but the is no where to find a 5V DC 800mA one)

My tripod the connection to the camera piece snaped, I fixed it with some epoxy, but it still wobbles a bit.

I'm missing a little screw on my camera and minidisc recorder. This doesn't effect performance, but if another screw were to fall out it could.

My bike was vandalized beyond repair.

A couple stomp boxes that were stomped on too hard, but they should be easy to just solder back together, unless any board cracked.

I think that's it.

a molar on the left bottom

Huckleberry, I share your pain! I was away on holiday since last Sunday and have spent since Tuesday curled up in pain taking billions of industrial-strength painkillers, since my attempted explanation to a dentist in Spain yielded the entirely wrong result (a quick drill and a ton of painkillers /= total relief) and it's hurting worse than ever. I am waiting on my dentist to call me back to let me know when they can see me.

As a result, my spirit is somewhat broken also.

boiler - failed some time ago..no hot water (shower still works, thankfully)
fridge - light bulb just failed
CD burner - open/close mechanism erratic (still burns ok)
computer - battery failed long ago (ok..I just reset the date each time I boot)
digital camera - just noticed some bad pixels (ok..just make a note of the co-ordinates and clone out from each image)
old Casio sampler - fails to 'boot' in cold weather, plus dodgy disk drive takes ages to load, also related to temperature (ok..thankfully I rarely use it)
teeth - two now where bits of filling/tooth have broken off (no toothache yet)
back pain - recurrence (or residue) of disc problem (ok I can live with it)
zip drive - failed (ok I have another one, plus I don't use them much now)
mobile phone - weird corrupted display, intermittent fault (ok I can't be bothered replacing it until it fails completely)
kettle - failed about 2 yrs ago (I have a backup kettle but it has a dead mouse in it..I just use a small saucepan now)
small saucepan - handle is failing from overboiling
turntable - needs a new stylus (must replace that this week)

David (David), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Tooth no longer broken thanks to dentist. Camcorder broken at the moment as a bottle of vodka shattered in my bag on my way back from Spain yesterday resulting in no vodka, a bag that smells like a hangover and a knackered (and probably pissed) camcorder.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 15 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my phone has a vertical line running down it since I dropped it in London a few months ago. Recently a second one appeared in solidarity. It's a good thing I'm a good guesser.

1. Very Expensive Apple Macintosh G4 15" Laptop, completely ruined by spilt port wine

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT SUCKS. Can you make Apple replace it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I just blew $400 on a goddamned windshield. I don't even want to think about the other costs I've incurred over the past year with regards to my automobile and maintenance. Then this on top of everything else. I can only hope that Apple or someone feels charitable enough to replace it fro a reasonable fee. At the very least I've quite likely lost all of the data I had on the drive (4500 songs, etc.)

I would like to be shot in the head.

xpost.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If you can get to the hard drive from another computer, you can probably get the data back. Also, have you tried taking out the keyboard and swabbing the insides with rubbing alcohol? I had a computer in college that got rained on multiple times which would be very insane while it was still damp, but once it dried out it would be fine.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ack, horrid news, Tombot. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the king of Computer Mistreatment! If I can get my crappy PCs to work, surely you can get your Mac to work.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

OK seriously one time SOMEONE at my workplace who MIGHT have a first name starting with C threw a laptop into a wall and busted the whole thing and we put it back together, I don't think it's necessarily a lost cause.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I once spilled half a pint of lager on my iBook (which I'm using right now, thank god I didn't try to sell it off) and it was fine - I was able to lift up the keyboard and clean off things (also lager != port wine) so after a couple of days everything got back to normal.

In this case the machine was actually making NASTY SCREESHING WHINING COOKING noises while I was trying to get it to shut down and then the monitor did some REALLY ODD PSYCHODELIC SHIT so I'm pretty certain the whole thing's fucked. Like, proper fucked.

Eh. I'm going to go to bed soon and find an Apple Store tomorrow and take it in. Maybe I should reconsider my trust in fate.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Just remember, no matter how bad things look for you, some poor slob out there has it worse.

Ha, I can add "my ability to link threads" to the list of things that are broken.

Try this.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I spilled lemonade into this dumbass Thinkpad two years ago (enough that I turned it over and it came pouring back out of the keyboard) and it's still chugging along. It's amazing how resilient these things can be.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Apple Store staffer who told me to just call Cupertino and ask for an overnight box: "That's probably the most expensive bottle of wine you've ever opened"

It is completely due to the aesthetics of the Apple Store and the staffer's old harmless man visage that I did not tell him to go fuck himself. Why is it that every time I have to deal with face-to-face customer service I arrive at the conclusion that I hate the company? Volkswagen, Verizon, and now APPLE FUCKING COMPUTERS.

I dislike my life and wish somebody would just frame me in an elaborate assassination plot. At least then I'd have something vaguely interesting to worry about.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you tried cleaning it out and starting it up again yet?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Casing cannot be opened by user except small panels for battery and RAM/wireless card installation.
2. PORT WINE. SOUND OF COOKING. WHINING NOISE.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that sucks. Bang goes any chance of me buying an Apple laptop.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you tried kicking it?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just like the VW, actually. I love it to death and it's totally sweet, right, then something breaks and it's hell to pay for repairs and service. Frankly I'm not sure Apple's lost me as a customer YET, depending on how the rest of this scenario pans out, but mostly right now I'm basically like "Well the other companies suck even more dick"

xpost no, last time I actually tried getting physical with a piece of unruly electronics (Verizon cellphone, Samsung A310) I wound up having ... oh, fuck it. See above.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My Discman. I have no luck with these things apparently -- the one I bought last December got stolen two months later and I had to replace it. Last time it was swiped from the pocket of a coat I left in the coat room at a club. This time I entrusted it to the bag check dork at the Strand bookstore (you HAVE to check your bag, you can't opt not to, they're very anal about this) and he must have gone rifling through my bag and DROPPED the Discman because when I took it out in the subway it (a) started from track 01 when it was queued to resume at track 09 (b) stopped working completely after a minute. (The batteries are fine; I checked.)

Is this the thread where I break down and get an iPod now?

Well I shipped it out overnight on Thursday and I have it back right here. It looks great! The hard drive was completely wiped and unrecoverable! I'm paying out of my ass for this! I get to rip my entire music library all over again! But it was REALLY FAST SERVICE. I suppose when they just decide to fuck it and send you a brand new computer it doesn't take all that long.

parts list of replaced items:

1. PCBA, MLB, BEST, 1.3MHz, WALDORF, Q16
2. DSPL, 15.2, XGA, PB15", SAMSUNG W5 (ouuuuch)
3. HARD DRIVE 80GB, FUJITSU (oohhhh gawwwwd)
4. Q16 PCBA, MLB, RT LT I/O
5. Q16 PCBA, RT USB
6. DA MKE UJ-816-C 2X SLOT SUPERDRIVE
7. Q16 PCBA, BLUETOOTH
8. Q16 ALS ASSY, LT
9. Q16 ALS ASSY, RT
10. Q16 KEYBOARD, LIGHTED, US

so basically I think that leaves the battery, the smartcard slot and the trackpad. Aren't I proud of myself!

My car stereo - the on button doesn't stay depressed. We have to jam toothpicks and whatnot in there. Then once it's working it sometimes only plays out of one speaker.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The power lead of my record player is fucked. The sound cuts out in the left speaker and I have to wiggle the power lead around for a bit til it comes back on. Then after a few songs it cuts out again. Took me a while to figure out it was the power lead doing it, used to fiddle with the phono leads.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am worried that my PS2 is going to explode the second I put GTA5 in the disc tray. Then again I worry every day about silly stuff like this.

At the moment my PC is suffering severley from DirectX problems and none of my games will play on Windows. internet still works fine so meh.

my kitchen ceiling has developed dampness but i will leave this to my landlord to worry about.

and my tv in my bedroom changes channels randomly whenever it feels like it, but thats kinda funny.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 28 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

More turntable troubles: motor-speed problem with the Technics belt-drive. I started noticing it having trouble keeping up, and figured it was the belt. But replacing the belt didn't help, so we'll have to go to plan B -- a different deck. Fortunately, I've got a Dual that's probably a better turntable, but the cartridge isn't as new or nice.
