Smiths Fan vs Robert Palmer Girl

Okay, another what shall I wear thread. On Friday my friends Alice and Tom are celebrating their birthdays by having an eighties theme party.

When I last went to an 80's party I did the goth thing (Joy Division T-shirt, birds' nest hair, much black net), so I want to do something else now. The above are my two choices of outfit. For obvious looking nice reasons, Robert Palmer Girl is winning. Tom even says I can borrow his bass guitar. But my figure is mostly on the boobs and bum side, rather than sticky model, so when I wear a little black dress with red lips I look more 1940's thn 1980's.
Ideas, opinions, massive degeneration into goth name calling.

I like the Robert Palmer girl idea, but the smiths fan could be more fun!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Smiths fan means I need to go shopping for a cardigan and some gladioli.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you should go as a 1989 raver. - smiley t-shirt and dungarees, bandanna - the works

chris (chris), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you could get away with a palmer girl. just pull your hair into a slick bun, and you're in. with the killer heels you wear anyway, i'm sure you'll look great!

just add some huge shoulder pads to give it the air of 80s authenticity. (oh god i can't spell today. and am too tired to care)

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna - are you still in your crouch end flat?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Get a frightful perm and go as 80s Kylie.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Nick, sorry, meant to text back. Why were you awake so early?

(Matt, I can do that just using curl booster)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It was late last night, not early.

Go as Annie or Marmalade Atkins

*ducks*

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

When I had an 80s theme party some years ago the prize-winning costume just involved an enormous clock on a rope and a baseball cap.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick if you were still living in Stoke Newington, you'd be dead in half an hour. As it is, you'll have to live in suspense, knowing that one of my Glasgow 'contacts' is about to come round and bump you off quite soon.

No one is allowed to use the 'A' word in my presence.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Sonia?

*also ducks*

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Molly Ringworm?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Get a navy blue airline pilot's outfit and go as Billy Mackenzie. I know I would.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Carol bloody Decker. Have your revenge.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Anna we have a complete Smiths Fan wardrobe service inc. proper Smithdom teeshirts here. Be very afraid.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure how easy it would be to make a distinctive Carol Decker, unless you go down the 'clever prop play' route of carrying a cup and saucer round all night.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

P.S. I resent the assertion that Robert Palmer women look nicer than 80s Smiths apostles. Actually, I don't resent the assertion so much as the truth of it.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand N's clever prop play. Do I?

I think Anna F is showing off.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"China in Your Hand" (after much brain-hurting). I think that would confuse people even more though. Best not to.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My friend Mark used to go out with Everyday Is Like Sunday video-girl who was pretty hot.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that cannot be gainsaid.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Rubbish video though. Why not go as Joan Sims?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched it again the other day! It is not really rubbish unless you think all Morrissey videos are rubbish, which we do - and yet - we do not.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It just has this annoying but quite hott girl ponce around the seaside being all superior and Morrissey's not even in it till the last, supposedly clever but not scene.

Now Suedehead, there's a video.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, when I met Morrissey in 1986 I was wearing a 1950s smoking jacket, black leggings, and this little black dress not too dissimilar from those worn by Robert Palmer Girl.

One of my friends was always dressed as Sade Bolero Girl.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you suggesting Anna goes as you?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what I'll be wearing when I meet morrissey in 2006.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna have you tried Cyndi Lauper?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point Steve.

RJG: you'll be wearing a straitjacket, obv.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna have you tried Cyndi Lauper?

If so, how was she?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy: I hope so.
