When it happens in my roommates' bathroom while I'm at work and don't have to deal with it ever except for occasionally shaming them at their panic, classic.

Ultra classic.

Poop or no poop?

There's a new track on Rogan Whitenails' Electromancer page about toilet blocking; words taken from his book, 'Failure Crawled up my Leg (More Scatology and Pyrotechnical Self-Pity)'.

Toilet overflow when its the men's loos at Paladin nightclub and its mid summer and stinking hot so the whole place reeks of shit - pretty dud. Tho classic that it was the mens. Hee.

Whilst at work a friend of my roommate's used my toilet and caused it to nearly overflow. I came home and instead of the toilet being cleaned out, it looked something like this:

sans the "RTX' natch

eighteen years pass...

The toilet flooded the bathroom this morning, it soon became apparent the blockage was too far down the line for me to fix it. The council plumber arrives and half sorts the problem, then the civil guy arrives does some work and says: you can use the toilet now but just don't go to the back of your house until I return. He doesn't return and I go and see the damage. Basically he's left the soil pipe cut open where it should connect with the sub stack to the sewer. And put a plastic cordon around it, lol like that should do it! I'm now waiting for the nightshift civil team to arrive and praying my son doesn't decide he wants to lay a huge jumbo jobbie that spills out into the back yard.

I feel like there are different words for plumbing things in the UK than in the US ... like, is the "sub stack" the equivalent of a "sewer lateral" or is it something else?

sarahell, Monday, 4 July 2022 20:49 (three years ago)

I was just repeating what the civil guy said to me, but I think it means the underground bend part joined onto the soil pipe en route to the sewer. Great, now my son is having a shit and the nightshift civil team could arrive any minute. I'm just praying he finishes it before they arrive and then I can just pretend it hasn't happened and ignore the door if they knock. Although there is still the worse case scenario that he flushes it while they are below.

Many a substack has been associated with an overflow of shit iirc

Wiggum Dorma (wins), Monday, 4 July 2022 21:08 (three years ago)

lol yes!

calzino, Monday, 4 July 2022 21:08 (three years ago)

ugh ... I would think in their line of work that they would ... take precautions of that sort prior to commencing work. ... also, I learned something new about plumbing conventions in older buildings vs. newer construction (two systems vs. one integrated system) and the significance of the pipe and venting ability ... not to be abstract and annoying about your shitty situation.

sarahell, Monday, 4 July 2022 21:11 (three years ago)

the good news is he's finished it and flushed, the bad news is I don't have the stomach for the clean up job rn. lol soz lads, but it's your department that has let you down here.

calzino, Monday, 4 July 2022 21:14 (three years ago)

lol, every so often I consider a career change, and think about going into plumbing ... then I think about situations like this, and I decide ... no, I don't have the stomach for it. Maybe if there were a gun to my head and I had to choose between being a plumber and being a cop ....

sarahell, Monday, 4 July 2022 21:17 (three years ago)

the civil team have just arrived and I profusely apologised to them about the shit and they were really genuinely chill and fine about it. I guess you get used to shit!

calzino, Monday, 4 July 2022 21:26 (three years ago)

They are such good professionals - I can hear every word they are saying through the kitchen window and it's all professional stuff - rather than complaining about the stench!

calzino, Monday, 4 July 2022 21:31 (three years ago)

looking at the pros and cons of different construction trades, Sarah - unless working exclusively on new builds they nearly all get exposed to asbestos - but plumbers have to deal with huge amounts of human excrement as well. I guess that's how they justify charging you 200 quid for a half hour boiler service!
