Alright who here is not who they are, and why does it matter?

My name is my own. I can have opinions that no-one is going to take me to task for in an unreasonable way. I know that is not so for some people.

So off you all jolly well go with it..

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i am actually Ronan. we switched places in a Face/Off-esque incident. but we look fairly similar and nobody has really noticed. I am the bad guy though.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the twee Jess.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM OWL-MAN.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I am evil Homer

chris (chris), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My email address is mine, my name is more or less mine. I never fap, and have never knowingly* met another poster.
*I think I met one on Tuesday.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

my name is my own too, abeit a shortened version. If I was to use another identity what would it matter ? I would interested to know why this would bother anybody.

(or would I?)

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine login is a nickname i picked up or adopted somehwere along the last nine years. the El Santo name is for the holidaze.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem = King o' tha diddly diddly SHOCKAH!!*

*I nearly did a bottom sick with larfter when I read that thread yesterday.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I use 'Pashmina' just so I don't get googled using filthy barrack room language by my mum and dad, who are old and straight-laced. My real name is in the archives in plenty of places.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Ned Raggett.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no I take that back. I'm Slim Shady.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand why kate wanted to expose you, now.

crosspost

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean for being ned, right?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

being ned is wrong.

; )

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty much me.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh if that's the case, I get it. (btw, "I'm Ned Raggett" is kind of an AIM joke.)

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

HI DERE

THE AMAZING RANDY, Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I use my actual first name and when I first posted to ILM I used my last name as well. I'm seriously starting to thing that the vast majority of ilxors may be huge losers. I'm not saying I'm not one, btw, nor am I saying that this opinion has anything to do with whether or not I use my real name or if anyone else does. ILE is being overrun by Three's Company fans.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

My name is Sarah Johnson, but guess what fuckers??! THere's a million bajillion (approx.) Sarah Johnsons in the world. So, take that!

My email address is real. I have loads of ILXor emails I need to reply to right this second, so if you want to add to the pile, go ahead. I'm all over it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I also posted as THE AMAZING RANDY a few times in the hopes of PISSING THE AMAZING RANDY OFF. FUCK YOU AMAZING RANDY.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

this isn't my real name. neither was the other one. if you really, really want to know my real name I'll tell you, but really, it doesn't matter.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a 'spam' mail once, someone wanted me to mail them the words to Beyonce's "Crazy right now" song.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my last name actually is more than one letter long.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

My real name is Henry Miller. Google that!

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

For the record, I'm not a fan of Three's Company.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

and tonight Matthew ...

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I yam what I yam < /popeye >

robster (robster), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've ever seen an episode of Three's Company.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Ned Raggett.

YOUR NAME IS NOT DAN PERRY. Therefore you are not me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I am Tuomas Alho, as it says on my e-mail address. The address is real, you can mail me if you want to. My phone number is +358505641841, but I wouldn't recommend calling me, that shit'll cost you.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks to fellow classmate mark b******, i've been mark p since kindergarten! before that, i was known in the household as marky (no thanks to mark my father, now happily referred to as 'short mark')

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

In money, I mean.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Three's Company fan, I'm sorry.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

As I vaguely recall Three's Company was crapola ultra maxima.

Fred Nerk was a name that cropped up on the Goons now and again, and in Australia it's the 'substitute' name you get called when whoever's doing the talking has forgotten your actual name.

If you Googled my real name the only entry there would be obviously me (to anyone who knew me), and potentially quite embarrasing.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You actually fit in poorly with what I was thinking, Devil Robot, but ok. Oh yeah, my email address is real and I'D LOVE IT IF SOMEONE WOULD EMAIL ME EVEN IF IT'S TO TELL ME TO FUCK OFF!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

my email is real, and you can email me too and then I'll tell Bryan to fuck off.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not who I am for standard internet mentalist reasons...don't want people who know me IRL to find all this, don't want internet people to harrass me at work/home. My email is real, though, and I'm fairly free with my real identity in chat if I feel comfortable with everyone.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i am geir
i am also "geir"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

so my name is really eisbær because that's norwegian for eisbär

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

My email isn't real. Or rather it was but it lapsed at hotmail. I'd guess most people who want to contact me read my site anyway though and the email there works.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm easily found
if you follow all my links
if you care that much

my email is real
my despair is mostly fake
like my happiness

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to use real name, but i dont anymore, partly because work etc etc, but also, some of the threads are a little silly, and i'm kind of embarrassed to have my name on them

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

but your username is still gareth...

i put stevem cos i wanted to get closer to people - i do wish i had put a 'DELETETHISBIT' into my e-mail address tho

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not Unruly in the slightest. It was just wishful thinking on my part.

C J (C J), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My last name isn't Tabren. It sounds OK, though, maybe better than Brennan.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Caitlin isn't the name on my passport or my birth certificate, but it is what pretty much all my friends call me; most of them don't know my legal name.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I became jel through ILX. I achieved my destiny. Before ILX I was James.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't even think of a nickname for myself. how pathetic!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

did people have to use the exclamation mark?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was the subject of an Internet stalker, believe it or not, the last time I used my real email address. And this guy who did it was a real fucking asshole, who got my home phone number somehow and left threatening messages. So I'm pretty paranoid about the 'Net when it comes to names and email addys. Yeah, I guess I could be worried about the IP and cookie thing more than I am, too.

don weiner, Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

did people have to use the exclamation mark?

YES THEY DID, plus the odd capitalization.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

did people have to use the exclamation mark?

Does anyone else ask themselves this question when addressing gygax? (I mean, gygax!?)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know.

sincerely,

amateur!st

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha that never occurred to me, jaymc! And, given what I just posted, you'd think that it would!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I developed this name in order to be able to post at work and not have the psycho goolgers in the office find me. My old email address used to work, but then I had a little run in with some gangsters and, well, the whole anonymous thing has become quite a blessing. I don't really like how girly girl cybele is, because I'm most certainly not like that in real life. I'm pretty cynical, loud, opinionated, and liable to get quite drunk when people offer me free alcohol (see Mirror/ICI party last week for details--if only you were there s1utsky, if only you were there...).

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

J.lu is derived from my real name.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 18 December 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, so it seems most people here use pseudonyms. Would anyone mind if I switched to Mrs. Margera?

Samantha started out as just a pseudo for messageboards and my blog but now I use it for alot of things. Using a fake (or different) name can help you track who's selling your name/address (real and virtual). The majority of my real life friends know I'm Samantha as well. My Friendster testimonials call me by both. If you go into Sh1ps lounge in the EDT and ask for Samantha they'll know you're talking 'bout me. :)

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Melly isnt my proper name, but it's a nickname some of my friends use for me. My email address is real - comes from a song lyric from years back, although i have long forgotten the name of the song.

Melly E (Melly E), Thursday, 18 December 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i share my name with a very famous film star who died driving a porsche some time in the 1950s. and i am utterly, utterly, utterly ungoogleable as a result.

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, I forgot that my real name is the same as a famous TV personality from the 70s and 80s. That keeps the ex-girls out of my life I suppose but the email is still worth protecting.

don weiner, Friday, 19 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Surface noise, you are James Dean and I claim my free meal at the Hard Rock Cafe.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

colin, you're tearing me apart!

http://www.mtr.org/involved/images/deansm.gif

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

cybele how was the party? i was in nyc! i hate that i missed a free booze & food party!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

When Jim told me his real name I was incredulous.

My real name is in the FAQ. It is Andrew.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 19 December 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine is a pseudonym. My real name is Tony Cascarino.

Patrick Kinghorn, Friday, 19 December 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I am me all the way; I'd get confused otherwise.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 19 December 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Kim is real. Grimstitch is imaginary.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Would I lie to you?"

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! This thread is like rollcall, I like it.

Matt's my real name. Below is the only email address I regularly use.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 19 December 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! I had no idea this thread was also pertinent to one's e-mail address! Ok, so mine is real, but here's the deal -- you have to delete the "you can never been too careful about these things" spamblocker, i.e. the _downspamdown_ part of the e-mail address below -- and then you've got my actual e-mail address. I check it on at least a semi-regular basis, so chances are good that you will catch my attention there.

Um, that is if you want to e-mail me.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 19 December 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh emails, yeah my email address is real. Grimstitch is just in no way my name.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 19 December 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i got a christmas card today addressed to gaz! i knew immediately who it was from.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 19 December 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Troughman?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Friday, 19 December 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a bona fide yeti. i have the dna analysis to prove this.

yetimike (McGonigal), Friday, 19 December 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, well, mine is obviously a psuedonym; I spent the previous year as "Mr. Diamond" and just felt the need for change. I'm basically just warding off the googlers, is all. I don't care if ILX0rs know my name; I've stated it on a few threads already and in chat and so forth. My email totally works though. And yeah, I've gotta say my experience is a heck of a lot different to those listed above: it feels like the amount of spam I'm receiving each day had tripled or so in the time I've been on ILX. It's freakin' ridiculous, just ridiculous, how much I receive. Obviously that could be attributed to other sources, but the only other places I've really used this address are newspapers and a couple other supposedly reputable businesses. Ah well, just gotta grin and bear it. I do wonder if some of these bots have ways of registering and harvesting or whatever, though..

Also, what's the deal with not logging in? Is there any particular advantage to doing that? Like, why do it all of the sudden if you always logged in before, I guess... (tombot, ally?)

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

also - hey, this is a shout-out to yetimike - I met you like a decade ago at the David Kilgour / Basehead show at the Gas Station in NYC! Do you remember that show? Nuttiness.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am actually a marketing concept-slash-promobot concocted by Definitive Jux to spread internet buzz.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Half of my name is almost real, I added the extra E in between the usual E's just so I'd be able to search my posts on here more easily (this was before the advanced search fields were introduced). Email is functional if you can decipher my super-complicated encryption.

Leee Iacocca (Leee), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still keeping it real here, like I say. Other boards I go to I do use pseudonyms. One board I had three. One was basically myself, one was a 'dumb' persona, and another was female, but not for kinky reasons...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 December 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i am whatever you say i am, if i wasn't then why would i say i am? In the ILX, the threads, everyday I am (I don’t know it’s just the way I am)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sort of who I say I am

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I did recently get an abusive email from Maressa Marchant, which got me worried, but it was just the one so no worries...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Shh, or everyone will want one!!

My email address here is a working one, but it's the one where I don't really mind if I get spam - Yahoo is fairly good at dealing with it, and I check it several times a day. Please do email me if you'd like to.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to use my full name but changed it to the shortened version everyone seemed to be using anyway, after an attack of google fear. The Ricardo development is Ptee's fault.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 19 December 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

'Half of my name is almost real, I added the extra E in between the usual E's just so I'd be able to search my posts on here more easily'
(Leee)

That's an important detail to remember of course: the extra E is the MIDDLE one.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm Cat Deely. I use SMMMMMMMYYYYYYLEXXXXXXXX.

Love that Joker!

Catty (Catty), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

For all you people who fear your name being googled: couldn't you use just your first name. I do it, and even though "Tuomas" surely isn't the most regular InterWeb name, googling it won't lead you here. Only if you have a particularly original first name there would be a slight chance that a boss or a relative would come accross ILX.

Everyone is of course entitled to use a pseudonym, but I find kinda weird to address someone as "Tico Tico" or "Amateurist" instead of real human names...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if there weren't any google stalkers in the first place, this wouldn't really be an issue.

Sophie Ellis Baxter Birney (Catty), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an somewhat rare first and totally bizarro last name. I know 'teeny' is twee, but it's working for me. Also I use my real name on the radio.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 19 December 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

not my real name but more widely known as this in real life anyway. i don't think if anyone did a goog for "patrick faigan" they'd find anything & so what if they did unless they told my mother that i was using bad language or hard drugs. they won't tho, they don't know her.
also i use lots of made up names but you're supposed to be able to tell it's me

duane, Friday, 19 December 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the not logging in thing is cause if i go to this site on my computer it's usually logged in in di's drag queen pseudonym so i just log out & don't log back in cause i'm lazy & i can't type properly

duane, Friday, 19 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

My name is Ian, but when I first started reading/posting over on ILM there were at least 2 other Ians on there, so I didn't use my name and haven't bothered changing it to anything else.

webcrack (music=crack), Friday, 19 December 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, my name meme is making me hella more googlable. The second of three results for "Leee Iacocca":

I Love Everything Blog
... He fondled my testicles, then ran off. posted by Leee Iacocca 10:02 PM (email)
(7 answers). ... posted by Leee Iacocca 10:48 PM (email)

Leee Marvin (Leee), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly, "Fury" isn't my real last name. My real last name is too long and hard to pronounce and people can't spell it even if they can pronounce it. So there.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to use my full name, but stopped because it was a pain to type in all the time (back in the greenspun days). The email address is real and my main one for all personal communications.

Ed (dali), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeanne, is "Fury" an abbreviated form of your real last name? Or totally unrelated?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Apart from the un-dotted double-i's, I'm mostly as me as can be
(and fuck the slash/happy 'puters, too!)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Very much completely unrelated to my last name. Apt for my oh-so-chipper personality, though.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 19 December 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)
