I thought this was going to be a pro-insect tract.

Thank god for that.

I once was bit by so many mosquitos (while camping in the Everglades high on mushrooms, I 'forgot' to sleep inside the tent) that the next day, I looked like the Goodrich tire guy, only colored red-pink, and I could barely feel anything at all.

Wait, that's way more what drugs did to me than what insects did to me, isn't it??? Hmmm.

the bees stung me, the mosquitos bit me

Don't get me started. Uses for arthropods (other than the scarab beetle, obv):

1. honey
2. eating, if they are from the sea

Once a mosquito bit the back of my hand exactly once, and the swelling was so bad I nearly lost my knuckles.

*shudders at the memory of the time I ran the lawn mower over a bees nest*

(Are bees insects? In the way that spiders technically are not insects, but another species of creepy crawly things?)

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

no, they're insects all right!

s1utsky (slutsky), Friday, 19 December 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

6 legs + 3 body sections (head, thorax, abdomen) = insects

Hard shell, wings encased therein = beetle
Otherwise = bug

Mites, spiders, scorpions: 8 legs + 2 body sections = arachnids

The last time I got stung by a bee (which was lurking beneath a mango at a Hassidic fruit market in Outremont), it was instantaneous--no expectation of sting--and I was surprised at how little it hurt. I think it's mainly the fear of bees that makes being stung by one so bad. Really, it's like a pinch. Come on, you big babies.

no way...it stung luck a motherfucker! severe but clean, pure pain. i pulled the sting, unbroken, out. 30 mins later it was a dull ache.

and as for ticks...
ok so i'm pretty broke and can't afford an elephant in a wildlife park in nepal so i'm on foot and the guide says that rhino is about to charge and i climb a tree, and, later i find out, a tick gets in my armpit.

and days later (i'm sick anyway with flu?) i'm trying to coax the fucker (big and full of my blood) out with a burning match and then i get REALLY sick (lethargic) and i go to an indian doc (cos i'm in india) and he gives me this cream and i'm SCEPTICAL like wtf?

and then...he drops off. of course.

jeeez i was a wussy tourist.

Stung by wasp once. It was drowsy and lying on the floor and I had bare feet. Hurt like fuc but applied vinegar quickly so ok.

In a later incident, another wasp flew into my sleeve. It got panicky and tried to sting but ended up burying the sting in my coat haha!

Been bitten by various gnats etc - oh and fleas when I had a cat.

robster (robster), Friday, 19 December 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasp about 6 times, the nastiest being when I felt an insect on my head, brushed it off, and managed to knock it down the back of my shirt. It was only when it stung me I realised it was a wasp, and then for the next few horrified seconds I was absolutely desperate to get my shirt off, which somehow I managed without another sting.

I was stung by a bee once, when I was 5 and stepped on it, and it was probably the least painful of my stinging experiences.

Now jellyfish, that another matter entirely. (shudder)
