So, after the game last night (46 points, 9 boards and 7 assists), I've got to say that he's CLEARLY the best young player in the game - Wade is great, but isn't as overpoweringly dominant, Duncan and Kobe are vets by now, and as great as Gilbert Arenas is, he's not 6'8" with sprinter speed and kangaroo hops.
What do you all think of him now, 3 years into his career, doing what he's doing? Do the Cavs stand any chance against San Antonio, should they make the finals?
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 1 June 2007 16:04 (nineteen years ago)
wade has been better so far but he's injury prone and lebron clearly has a higher ceiling - it's just does he give enough of a fuck. also he's on absolutely the wrong team - how yr gonna pair the best fast break player in the league w/ilgausguzz and snow etc wtf bigtime. that should be illegal.
personally im psyched for kevin durant
― jhøshea, Friday, 1 June 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)
Are you in Seattle?
I totally agree - Bronbron has NO supporting cast. But I kind of think that that's what is making what he's done over the past two games all the more special. Unlike Jordan, or Wade, or Duncan, or Kobe, who all had at least SOME secondary (or tertiary, in Duncan's case) option, Bron is the only thing from Cleveland that deserves to be in the NBA postseason. And he's absolutely carrying their entire team.
At least we know that he won't get stranded like Garnett - Duncan would hvae suffered the same fate, regardless of how good he is, if he got stranded on a team and hadn't won any titles yet. Bron is a more exciting player that the NBA wants to market. Even if he never wins a championship while in Cleveland, at least we'll be able to see the highlights.
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 1 June 2007 16:16 (nineteen years ago)
it's like bernard king when he played for golden state - 50-point games for him were like the norm
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 June 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)
GREAT parallel. I actually saw Bernard go off for 50 when he was with the Bullets. At the Cap Center!
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 1 June 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)
yeah king wouldve been an all time great if not for the knees
xp not in seatle, i'm a celtics fan devastated we didnt get durant. but im still wicked amped about that dude.

CLEVELAND—During a press conference following the first game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, Cleveland Cavaliers star forward LeBron James requested that reporters give him "just a second" as he struggled to name a single player on his team aside from himself. "Well, um, let's see, they got... LeBron James, so that's one," said James, extending his thumb to represent the number of players he had named thus far. "What about Carlos Boozer? He's still on the Cavs, right? Yeah, Carlos has been doing great." After talking with teammate Zydrunas Ilgauskas later that night about their heartbreaking loss, James said his biggest regret was that he might never get to see "that nice man" ever again.
― deej, Friday, 1 June 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)
King and James aren't a lot alike, other than the lack of supporting cast.King was a scorer, pure and simple. With James, scoring is almost his biggest weakness (don't laugh). He's amazing with the ball, he's essentially the Cav's point guard. King wasn't like that. The sky's the limit with LeBron.

I recently found out that one of my cousin works for Lebron James' foundation!
― HI DERE, Friday, 1 June 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)
those are good points, bill
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 1 June 2007 18:57 (nineteen years ago)
I guess you're probably right about that, Bill. its as if everyone on the court knows that he's the best scorer, in addition to ball-handler/floor general, etc., and they just kind of stand around looking at him go.
I really, really hope that they can engineer something so that he can get more of a supporting cast around him. It would be SO cool to see a rounded, non-Kobe superstar come out of the East again.

Cavs thought they had their Pippen when they got Larry Hughes but he's been a pretty big disappointment. Can't shoot, doesn't make assists and plays point guard. Rookie Daniel Gibson looks to be the point guard of the future but what the Cavs need is an outside threat. Big Z, unbelievably, may have the best face up jump shot on the team.

I've been a Lebron hater but playing against the Pistons this series forced me to cheer for him, and he showed me something, won me over, even before last night. He actually does have a streak of fierce competitiveness in him. It may subside once he has a title or two and doesn't have to prove himself quite so much, we shall see. At one point during the game last night, still in regulation I think, Steve Kerr said "that was positively Jordanesque", and my friends and I pshawed it, but man, I haven't seen a performance like that since MJ. (they recently showed a game on ESPN Classic where MJ scored the Bulls' last 22, which set a record. I haven't heard anything about LJ setting a new record, but he must've, right?). The Cavs of '07 are roughly comparably to the Bulls teams of the mid 80s, before the emergence of Pippen and Grant et al. MJ never won a Conference Finals with his group of shlubs, but Lebron didn't have to go against Bird's Celtics or Isiah's Pistons. (The '00s Pistons are really good, but I doubt they're quite as good as those two squads) Wade is great, but Wade has Shaq. James is a better passer, better blocker, bigger, stronger. Wade is a better shooter (except not from 3), esp free throws. Both aren't great one-on-one defenders, but Lebron is more versatile. Lebron is unguardable. 6'2" skin n bones Kirk Hinrich has shut down Wade on multiple occasions. The Cavaliers would struggle to make the playoffs if you swapped Lebron for Wade. Heat would dominate---possibly in record fashion---if they had James. Kobe is better than both, for now.

haha u trippin
― jhøshea, Friday, 1 June 2007 21:46 (nineteen years ago)
if trippin is hip jazz slang for absolutely correct, then yes, I am.
― Granny Dainger, Friday, 1 June 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)
I agree. LeBron is on the rise, but Kobe is The Star of the NBA right now. Why else would EVEYONE, not just JA Adande and Bill Plashke be up in arms about his talking about the possibility of thinking about entering into discussions about Jerry Buss considering trading him?
― B.L.A.M., Friday, 1 June 2007 22:35 (nineteen years ago)
i've thought for a while now that they should move him to the 1, he reminds me more of magic than MJ. last night was very jordan-y tho~!
― cankles, Friday, 1 June 2007 23:51 (nineteen years ago)
It is true that (as of today) Kobe is the best offensive player on the planet. Doesn't make me like the guy one iota, though. I'm a Kobe hater from way back.
Nice to see LeBron putting one in the can for posterity. He does have Jordanian potential, AFAICS. Give him two more years and we'll see where he is then. Recall all the swooning over Wade when the Heat took the title. Wade is good, but not quite swoonworthy.
― Aimless, Friday, 1 June 2007 23:56 (nineteen years ago)
i'm loving gibson at the moment - his potential and attitude and ridiculous nickname.
― lauren, Saturday, 2 June 2007 00:03 (nineteen years ago)
Gibson should be playing at least 30 minutes each game. Beats me why he isn't.
― Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 2 June 2007 01:09 (nineteen years ago)
gibson has the quicks!
I remember when the Cavs had a fantastic all around team- Daugherty, Nance, Price, Hot Rod Williams, Ron Harper, Steve Kerr, Craig Ehlo. Why u braek hart.
― brownie, Saturday, 2 June 2007 02:16 (nineteen years ago)
Fantastic all around team but no Jordan! Now the shoe may be on the other foot, with the Bulls' possibly having a great all around team that can't get past Lebron and the James'.
― Granny Dainger, Monday, 4 June 2007 03:59 (nineteen years ago)
I agree with a freedarko commenter who compared LeBron to a full-sized guy playing against 3/4 scale models. his dominance is so much more physical than Kobe's or (ugh) Wade's, it's not really a fair comparison.
― bernard snowy, Monday, 4 June 2007 04:40 (nineteen years ago)
(ps I am basing this all on highlight reel footage because I don't have cable, argh. at least the finals are on ABC; I'm looking forward to seeing flashes of his newfound dominance in its proper context)

'Everybody in sport needs incentive and if the guys at Liverpool win something this year I will give them the best weekend of their life in Vegas.
'Kanye is in and trust me, nobody does Vegas like LeBron and Kanye.'
LeBron added: 'We will take them to places in Vegas 99 per cent of people don’t even know exist. There is Vegas and then there is Vegas.'
It's 17 months since James signed a deal with owners Fenway Sports Group to take a minority shareholding in the Merseyside club who have floundered despite massive investment in new players.
'From a business point of view if Liverpool do well, I do well, so it is in my interest to offer this incentive.'

― manti 乒乓 (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 04:17 (thirteen years ago)
tons of people thought melo should have been roy that year. denver made the playoffs and cleveland didn't and their numbers were otherwise comparable, but lebron was the christened golden boy so he was rewarded over melo. there was even a (shoe? energy drink? i don't remember) commercial that starred carmelo that alluded to his being underrated/shafted by the media despite having a better year.

btw last night's game got me thinking about LeBron's legacy in Los Angeles and how weird it's gonna be. barring a miracle they will have missed the playoffs 3 of his 5 seasons and one of the other years they got trounced thoroughly in the first round. they've been a nonstop disaster and legitimately one of the worst teams in the league for long stretches (particularly whenever AD is out). not only that but they mortgaged their entire future to do it and may not be competitive for 4-5 years after he retires. LeBron himself has put up insane numbers for a man of his age but the team seems to play okay without him. and yet, they did win a title. but it was the Covid title! idk I feel when he actually retires no one's really gonna know what to say about this era.

i was happy when Lebron got his first so dumb fans and lazy media would get off his dick. In the Finals against OKC, they lost game 1, and ESPN shared a graphic showing he doesn't finish games the way he starts, and it showed his points through three quarters, and his points in the fourth, and his points in the fourth were one point off of his average for each of the first three quarters.

xpost I love that JR Smith tried to lie about it too: "“I was trying to get enough space to bring it out to maybe get a shot off. I looked over at LeBron, and it looked like he was trying to call timeout, so I just stopped.”
dude was inches from the rim with a defender out of position, he could have laid it up or perhaps even dunked it, and he wasn't even looking at Bron!

I don't think the bubble year was fake it just felt disconnected from the regular season. like you know how at the beginning of the season some teams are just weirdly on fire (like say, the Jazz) while others you expect to be great just can't get anything together (the Nets)...it felt like we just took that part of the season and said "welp, that's the playoffs"
