And then I woke up and it was all a dream - C or D?

A common way to end a book, esp if it's a children's book. But is it a good one?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

not unless THEY'RE STILL IN THE DREAM!

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(obligatory mention of 'Dallas')

I always used to feel really let down by it as a kid, so DUD.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Pashmina OTM. Major major dud.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud, unless it's being parodied. And it has to be a clever parody.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember being told by my English teacher at school not to finish a story in this way, as it had been done so many times before.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I english teahcer told me this one and all. Mr Draper was his name - I used the ending in a sci-fi story once, and he gave me a glare that I remember to this day.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "don't have yuor characters go to the toilet unless its integral to the plot" was mentioned in the same lesson.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

What if going to the toilet is essential to build up characterisation>

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What if going to the toilet is used to build up characterisation?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, if only for the last episode of Sunset Beach.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Shit not again."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Best change the sheets."

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 20 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for dud IRL. Holly Valance was right there, dammit!

I can't believe no-one mentioned "or was it?", the U&K continuation.

The last episode of Sunset Beach was magic, magic, telly.

End of twin peaks return is like an awful type of inversion of this y/n

remember the lmao (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 01:26 (eight years ago)

it's an inverted trope yeah

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 01:47 (eight years ago)

i feel like the exoteric reading is that. the final episode is shot so naturally compared to the previous 17, with minimal lighting, minimal set design, cinema verite shakey camera, etc.. it is going for that feeling, even if it isn't explicitly saying "This is the Real World". this makes it all the more shocking and powerful when the ending comes.

but ultimately it's still quite ambiguous. she wakes up? when does she wake up? who is she when she wakes up? is she the Red King of this world and reality itself dissolves when she wakes up? is the entire series a dream she tells Cooper in the Red Room? there are so many possibilities. you could start at any point and just go off from there and think about this forever really.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 02:07 (eight years ago)

Given the season 2 ending, the return ending seemed in spirit with that. I don't have much to add but tend to see the show as a loop that could go on forever and a game that will just continually reset - unless cooper somehow lets go - how much his actions are fucking up space time is unclear to me

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 02:31 (eight years ago)

ultimately it's still quite ambiguous.

This is one of those tricks that storytellers just love to bits. But ultimately this is an ambiguity without a significance. What makes it seem important than it is, is that you want to know, but don't. But, if you could know, and there were some key to unlock the 'true' answer, what difference would it make other than giving you a moment's satisfaction that you've solved a difficult puzzle?

A is for (Aimless), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 04:10 (eight years ago)

sounds pretty reasonable aimless.

one of the good things about twin peaks is it seems like it's more about moments of potency than a unified explanation. the journey

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 04:37 (eight years ago)

Also dud when it happens to you irl.

I used to have a recurring nightmare where I won the lottery.

Nightmare? Yeah - I'd find out early in the dream, then spend the rest of it doing paperwork.

yes so otm. "potent" is the one word i would use to describe the whole season 3. no mythical "true answer" but an infinity of jumping off points.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:08 (eight years ago)

Just opened this thread, glad to see others had a similar double take wrt the Bellucci post. And the revive is TP-inspired, no less!

But yes, final episode felt like a protracted version of the scene when Betty sees her own dead body through the window in Mulholland Drive or the multiple instances of artifice collapse in Inland Empire. A jarring glass of cold water to the face, leaving you wondering where Monica went.
