The last episode of Sunset Beach was magic, magic, telly.

End of twin peaks return is like an awful type of inversion of this y/n
― remember the lmao (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 01:26 (eight years ago)
it's an inverted trope yeah
― kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 01:47 (eight years ago)
i feel like the exoteric reading is that. the final episode is shot so naturally compared to the previous 17, with minimal lighting, minimal set design, cinema verite shakey camera, etc.. it is going for that feeling, even if it isn't explicitly saying "This is the Real World". this makes it all the more shocking and powerful when the ending comes.
but ultimately it's still quite ambiguous. she wakes up? when does she wake up? who is she when she wakes up? is she the Red King of this world and reality itself dissolves when she wakes up? is the entire series a dream she tells Cooper in the Red Room? there are so many possibilities. you could start at any point and just go off from there and think about this forever really.

Given the season 2 ending, the return ending seemed in spirit with that. I don't have much to add but tend to see the show as a loop that could go on forever and a game that will just continually reset - unless cooper somehow lets go - how much his actions are fucking up space time is unclear to me

ultimately it's still quite ambiguous.
This is one of those tricks that storytellers just love to bits. But ultimately this is an ambiguity without a significance. What makes it seem important than it is, is that you want to know, but don't. But, if you could know, and there were some key to unlock the 'true' answer, what difference would it make other than giving you a moment's satisfaction that you've solved a difficult puzzle?

sounds pretty reasonable aimless.
one of the good things about twin peaks is it seems like it's more about moments of potency than a unified explanation. the journey

I used to have a recurring nightmare where I won the lottery.
Nightmare? Yeah - I'd find out early in the dream, then spend the rest of it doing paperwork.

yes so otm. "potent" is the one word i would use to describe the whole season 3. no mythical "true answer" but an infinity of jumping off points.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:08 (eight years ago)
Just opened this thread, glad to see others had a similar double take wrt the Bellucci post. And the revive is TP-inspired, no less!
But yes, final episode felt like a protracted version of the scene when Betty sees her own dead body through the window in Mulholland Drive or the multiple instances of artifice collapse in Inland Empire. A jarring glass of cold water to the face, leaving you wondering where Monica went.
