Do you fight?

Like, with fists?

I grew up in xenophobic Staten Island, New York (like Brooklyn, but less streetwise, more nasal) and couldn't really leave the house without resigning myself to the fact that I might end up with a black eye or a broken nose just for walking around. Going down the block to the deli, there was always a 50/50 chance you'd get fucked with and hafta fight.

I sorta assumed lots of people grew up this way, but I'm finding that isn't the case. I haven't been in a serious fight in a few years, but I have definitely had my share. Anyone else resort to solving disputes with their hands? Any good fight stories?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

no. i've been hit in the face once. never hit anyone else.

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I grew up in the coziest of North London burbs, so no fighting for me. Some kids jumped me and a friend when we were drunk once, and someone pulled a knife on me in Camden, but these were hardly everyday occurrences.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

nope. always big enough to avoid 'em!

no, but i'm a girl.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I got into three good fights in junior high. I never had to or felt the need after that. The couple of incidents of punches being thrown by me or others since then I wouldn't really call fights since they were almost entirely one-sided and all very, very short-lived.

TOMBOT, Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ramosi to thread.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

in a word, yes.

michael bott, Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Never been in a fight, came close a few times in high school. Until high school (and a three-year growth stoppage) I was the tallest and biggest kid in my grade, so no one ever wanted to. In high school, it was stupid group stuff - the "punks"/ARA-members/black kids/Hispanic kids (pick two!) vs. the rednecks that got broken up by the cops or school before anything happened.

Nowadays I guess I'd probably just laugh if someone wanted to fight, until they started kicking my ass.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 21 December 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I had one the night before last, and now I have stitches on my head. Xmas family fights are the stupidest fights of all.

sucka (sucka), Sunday, 21 December 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pretty "gay-acting" as a kid so I was beat up a lot. I didn't really fight back because I was so inept at it, and eventually I didn't even bother fighting back at all.

Actually, my neighborhood was fairly mellow -- it was summer camp where I got most of my thrashings. On my last-ever day (I was eleven), one kid got beat so bad he had to be taken to the hospital. A bunch of nasty little shits at that place.

I'm often smitten with the urge to punch people in the face but I haven't actually done that in close to twenty years. I probably wouldn't be very good at it anyway.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 21 December 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i did tae kwon do for a while in high school; i didn't get very far but it was a lot of fun and it got me moving around, and it's the closest i've ever been to a fight. i liked all the forms and techniques and drills, but i was never very good at sparring; i've got a world class flinch. and i'm non-combative on an almost physiological level. i could kick at someone no problem and defend okay (this was a club full of college kids and sparring was pretty aggressive and pad-free) but the frame of mind it takes to PUNCH someone is just beyond me. can't do it, never have.

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 21 December 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Once I was horsing around with my ex and I accidentally kicked him in the nose. It bled; I fainted; he thought it was all very funny. No, I don't fight.

jewelly (jewelly), Sunday, 21 December 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I fought with my brother (well, he beat the crap out of me, and I ran to tell my mom) when I was younger - finally stopped when he tried to choke me when I was 19 and realized he'd gone too far.

Otherwise, I've never been in a fistfight, though I did sucker punch a guy once who was hitting his girlfriend in the parking lot of a bar I was at.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 21 December 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ah i hate guys like you luna - wuzn't you taught to mind your beeswax?? those 'knights in shining armor' saving the 'damsel in distress' are usually just capitalizing on a lover's quarrel, using the 'grass is always greener' method. Bottomfeeders.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 21 December 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

*cough*

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 21 December 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

only fight i was in was a minor scrape in junior high. fought a little with my brother before he outgrew me.

now, i'm 6'1", 230lbs. no one has seen fit to punch me, and i'm quite conciliatory, so fights don't happen. My bro is 6'5" 250lbs, a former defensive captain for his college football team. No one fucks with him, either.

El Santo Claus (Kingfish), Sunday, 21 December 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So Orbit, do you have any scientific proof that you're better than everyone?

TOMBOT, Sunday, 21 December 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, I'm a girl...

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 21 December 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The real answer to this questions is as follows:

1. I never spoil for fights and I always avoid them in every circumstance I've encountered since the abovementioned
2. I have been waiting for a good reason to kill someone with my bare hands since I was 22
3. It has been three years and I am quite certain I could still do so.

Hooray double shots of vodka. Best party joint in town is three blocks from my house.

TOMBOT, Sunday, 21 December 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. However, I took TKD classes from 1st to 6th grade (when I got the black belt)and then figured that it wasn't getting me the chicks, so I started guitar, and promptly forgot all that karate bullshit. But even when I knew it, I was way bigger than everyone in my class (I'm 6'4" 270lbs right now, and I've always been big in proportion to people my age), so it was always like "You are too big to hit someone", so even when fights came looking for me, I always reacted like "I can't fight you, I'm too big, I'll get in trouble." Which somehow always worked in avoiding fights. So all through school I only got into a few "fights", and those were mostly some cocky little bastard swiping my hat and me grabbing him and shaking the shit out of him until he dropped it, at which point I picked up my hat and felt real bad for rattling the kid's skull.

Once I moved out of my town I started to just use my mass and some kinda fake-ass tough-guy talk (back home every knows that I don't fight anyone) to get out of fight situations peacefully ("Hey, man. I'm twice your size, and I'd be really embarrassed if anyone who knew me saw me throttling the living shit out of someone so small, so why don't we just part ways now and you can tell all your friends that you scared me away or something, I don't care".

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 21 December 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a few in school and the couple of years after - I worked in a city centre pub for a while, and they came up now and again. I'm pretty short, but muscly and quick, so I almost always came out of them well. I can't honestly remember losing one, though I got a few hard knocks. Nothing in 20 years now, and I don't remotely miss it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 21 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard that it's not uncommon for guys to get an erection if they're in a situation where a fight is truly eminent. True? It seems reasonable, all the testosterone and stuff.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've ever really taken a serious swing at anyone. A few older girls in my town were mean bitches who would brutally tease and threaten the younger girls (like um, me). Looking back on it, I wish I had beaten the crap out of them. I can't stand bullies.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i end up shoving guys here and there. usually at bars or clubs where they're trying to take advantage of my friends that are too small to fight back, or touch me after i've clearly said stop at least once. i don't necessarily like it, but much prefer actually doing something rather than sitting there taking what is minor sexual abuse from some strange jackass.

and i'm a girl, to avoid luna-esque confusion :)

(speaking of which, good going luna, i think it's brave to get involved in that kind of situation when most people prefer to mind their own business. and roger, if a 'lover's quarrel' means hitting a girl, i think you need to take a look at what the definition of domestic violence is and wise up!)

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in 2nd grade I pushed one of my classmates into a window that had like some sort of gate in front of it. His nose started to bleed and I think that scratched his glasses.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 21 December 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

colette - how do you know the girl isn't hitting the guy? or is that ok?

My point is that too many citizens nowadays feel the need to involve themselves in things that are none of their business, usually for their own ego / agenda.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

She wasn't hitting him - of that I was quite certain, and I had no agenda beyond 'bad man hit woman, must stop'.

Like it or not.

not luna, Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

er, i think your username clues us into your perspective, Mr. Adultery ;-)

I can. But I don't. And I don't want to either.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

luna - Hahaha good. But make no mistake, I'd be the first to admit that it is Lady Jessica who is boss round this house. I've never hit her and never would.

but have I hit / shoved women before? Sure. My theory is that, if you're a 90 pound weakling suffering from cerebal palsy and you take a crack at me for whatever reason, with the intent to 'strike' and 'hurt' me using all your might, I will do the same to you. No one is excluded.

The lesson is, don't solve disputes with your hands - and more importantly, don't assume you won't get hit back because you're female / small / blind / whatever. Violence is violence. Talk it out.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never fought.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never got a hint of an erection at the prospect of a fight. I lost one once! (My girlfriend's sister walked in on us having sex, ran out, and moments later her (ex-con thug) husband was threatening to kill me, because "My wife saw you naked!" Note that they lived elsewhere, and the sister walked into the house and her sister's bedroom without knocking, so I don't see how I was at fault. I was younger and weedier then, and hadn't grasped what kind of man he was, and I was scared - later I'd have stood up to him, and I know he would have backed off.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That cartoon gave me wood

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 21 December 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hand-to-hand combat with little sister and scraps in junior high aside, I've never fought except to defend myself or a friend. There's a little part of me that likes being the tiny person who doesn't look like they would ever go ROAR and kick your fat ass into the next county; I've surprised some hella bruisers twice my size as a result.

duane, Monday, 22 December 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I took a proper swing at someone three years ago almost to this day and drew blood, to my own amazement. But he *really* deserved it and I wouldn't even have attempted it if a) the three other people in the house hadn't been willing to back me up, and b) he was one of the few people in the world I could actually have won a fight with.

I reiterate, he really deserved it. Otherwise, I deplore violence.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried beating someone up in gym class because he kept making fun of me for sucking at volleyball. I tried punching him, but I just tripped and fell to the ground; then he kicked me in the nuts, and I was out of the game for the rest of the period.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 22 December 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i did a couple of week ago. a bad review that i gave in a national paper started it. and no, it was more like, a parody of the infamous nick kent/sid vicious tangle. i stopped myself though but not until i pushed the guy down the stairs.

had me thinking ...

yes, i grew up in a violent family, i grew up in a violent project (got stabbed twice before i was fourteen) ... and the people who i associate myself with now are not accustom to violence and thus i don't fight anymore. but yeah, fighting, weird. don't like it. and doubt i will be another occassion where i start one.

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

fight stories?

where i got my arse beat on:

a friend of mine got all involved this hip hop crew. they were looking for him. they found me. and beat twenty living daylights out of me eight miles styles.

i used to know some skinheads. i paid it no mind. they saw me with my black friend sandra. one saturday night i was walking by their house. five of them came out and beat me up eight mile styles.

where i kicked arse (not much, mind)

ha ha. best friend and i had a fight over my girl. he had slept with her. i beat him up and he was a big westpoint dude. but he was drunk. ha ha.

at a party this guy in a punk rock band kept on calling him hippie and fag asking me to fight him. something snapped and i beat the living shit out of him.

wow i so don't feel cool relating these stories. ha ha.

griffin doome, Monday, 22 December 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

had loads of fights in junior school, but they were pretty pathetic and just involved a lot of wrestling. Apart from one incident where some guy was hassling a girl from my class and I just walked up to him and punched him in the face. (my only brawl ever involving a lady)

The only other time I have been in a fight since then was when some kids jumped me while I was riding my bike, I think they wanted to steal it, but once I had kicked the shit out of one of them they all scarpered.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I have ever actually had a fight, but I have been involved in a few as such. Just mainly squaring up to ppl or vice versa or trying to split them up or whatever. I used to have full on fights with my bro when I was younger.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not recently, or very much since school (which was years and years ago) The idea of it sometimes seems quite cool and exciting, like I'd like to beat the fucking shit out of this or that charver scumbag, but it never makes you feel good, so I avoid it, unless it comes looking for me which is almost never, thank goodness.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes we should totally ignore our fellow citizens in peril, particularly women getting beaten on by their husbands. I mean if you can't take care of yourself, then fuck it!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been in numerous fights. I've been in trouble for this several times. The last time I really hit someone was several Christmases ago and I kind of pummelled the shit out of them and kind of freaked out myself, since it wasn't exactly an infraction that deserved such a reaction to begin with. I have willfully dislearned the art of fighting since then. I would dismiss this all completely as a horrible, horrible thing, lack of control or anger management for a good 21 years, but I'm pretty sure it saved my life once.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the only real fight I've ever been in was in elementary school. I say it was a real fight because me and the other kid decided we were going to fight - this was during recess at school - then we walked out to the far side of the field (so the teachers wouldn't see us) followed by a crowd of curious onlookers. When we reached a spot far enough away from the teachers, the other kid ran at me and knocked me down, but the teachers somehow appeared and pulled us apart before either of us had landed any good swings. Then we got in trouble and we had to stand by the wall for recess for the next week. Since then I haven't been in anything that I would call a fight, though I was sat on by a school bully once (but I was smart enough not to turn it into a fight), and I used to sometimes rough-house with friends in high school.
