so, i haven't had a new pair of glasses in about 4 years now and as i strain my neck to read this with my face pressed directly against the monitor, i ask you: how much do a pair cost these days? no one seems to want to give me a straight answer until i "come in for a checkup". i am hoping with any money i might rake in over xmas i can make the dream a reality.

also the thread title is a gift to you "thread connections" inclined types.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get a pair for about $100 if you go to one of the budget lensmakers and aren't too picky about the style of the frame.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get them for like $99 at LensCrafters. It all depends on what you are looking for. The ones I currently own (you know, me and you and everyone else on the east coast apparently) cost me I think $200, but I don't remember exact figure because I paid out of pocket almost none of that because of insurance.

Allyzay, Monday, 22 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i wasn't planning on getting new frames if i could avoid it...i suppose i DO need a new check up since my last one was around 00.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Join the military and you get as many pairs as you want for free. It's great, you don't even have to pick a style or get them fitted.

TOMBOT, Monday, 22 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh if you aren't getting new frames then you aren't going to pay that much at all. The entire exorbitancy of the cost is in the frames.

Allyzay, Monday, 22 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I have mild near-sightedness, and have had several prescriptions written over the years which I never ever fill. The thing is, I sort of like glasses, but I can never find a pair I want to put on my face. The only times I ever do, I pick up the frames and they're like $700 and I walk out of the store... (though I do compliment myself for my refined taste).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you're gonna need an exam, too. those are usually as expensive as glasses

oops (Oops), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i look like a giant mr. magoo right now.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

So I don't have any glasses. However, I do feel like I should join the NYC ILXor glasses death cult as witnessed in my FAP thread.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

if you have frames you like an exam (which you need obv.) is going to cost $50-70. New, basic lenses for your frames will probably then be around $70.

(I lost my glasses after several shots of Tuaca and Herradura last weekend. I just went to check on new ones and if I can wait till next month my insurance will get them. Otherwise $235. I'm tempted. I can't see shit.)

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

not those great vintage frames sam?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 22 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i'm wearing my great old vintage frames now which are nearly useless.

I lost my Bebe psuedo-cateyes. Lenscrafters, $150. Note, I lost them while removing my blouse onstage with Sl1ck 57. It was my 30th birthday, what are you going to do?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lions Club has a low cost/free eyeglass program, but you might end up looking like Tootsie.

andy, Monday, 22 December 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer I think you'd look great in our glasses. Join us. JOIN US.

Allyzay, Monday, 22 December 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Could aviators with clear lenses ever work? Horn-rims make me look even more pretentious than I already am.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i Love aviators but aviators with clear lenses, no. Unless you want to wear them with a trucker hat.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

what if they were silver framed and slightly blue tinted?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

well you're hip so go for it.

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 22 December 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

also, I have a large head. The smaller architect emo death cult frames can look small on my head.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Bemusing!

you're gonna need an exam, too.

Yes. Three years time between is too long. Sez me, Mr. Glasses Wearer since I was three or so.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv. if he's squinting at the screen w/current glasses he needs a new exam.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to have to get glasses.

It will be difficult to find a pair that suit me.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yus, Sam, but Jess seemed unsure! I wished to encourage him. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

The event mentioned upthread which preceeded me losing my glasses is now garnering me friendster msgs from complete strangers. Someone blind me quickly so I may never witness the looks of horror from shocked onlookers again! *sob*

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

andrew you should get aviators for serious!

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer, I'm pretty sure you could put a lampshade on your head and still look alright. Not to like dismiss your concerns or anything, I mean I'm not saying your head ISN'T large. The aviators sound like a good idea though.

Allyzay, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Ally, but my lampshade days are thankfully over. The aviator idea was inspired by the guitarist from Interstella 5555 when he becomes an earthling.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My new glasses (lens frames exam but the exam was 'cheap') cost me a horrifying amount which I won't divulge, mostly due to me being dumb and not working out what Vision Express would charge me for frames - DO NOT USE THEM fellow UK myopics. That said they are the first glasses I've ever owned that I've really liked.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"would charge me for lenses" that should say, the frame pricing was very clear.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Interstella 5555 is amazing. You should dress exactly like that at all times, Spencer

Allyzay, Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't worn glasses in three years (well I've got these huge chem-goggle plastic-lensed things from playing hockey when I was thirteen which I wear in the protective darkness of the movie theatre), feeling fine! apart from unintentionally snobbing everyone. oh, & the inability to make eye contact with anyone means things like, say, cruising, are completely out of the question. i dance alone, etc. if i ever come into (lots of) money, i'll consider getting contacts.
