The grey squirrel does not hibernate and it cannot store enough energy to survive for long periods without food. A larger, thicker winter drey is built, usually on a strong branch close to the trunk, and a squirrel will lie up in this in very cold weather, coming out now and then to search out hidden stores of food. These stores of single nuts and other items are buried in the ground in autumn, well spread out. They are found by smell, rather than memory.

This cheeky sod and its mate have extended their foraging to our kitchen if the back door's open. Last week they resorted to disappointed tapping on the window when we failed to leave any nuts out for them. Our cat tries to catch them but her heart's not in it since the day she was stalking one along a wall and it just ran straight at her, head on, leapt right over her and was two gardens away before she could turn around.

my aunt told me that the fat ball she keeps putting out for the birds keeps disappearing. She suspects a squirrel is the culprit, but is mystified as to how the squirrel transports the fat ball as it's quite large.

no questioning the grey squirrel's athleticism tho - my parents have two bird feeders and the local squirrel raids both. One is a plastic tube which they put seed in. It hangs upside down and sticks its paw in to retrieve seed. the other is a wire feeder full of peanuts. Again the squirrel hangs upside down and it gnaws between the wires. Thankfully not through the wire tho I'm sure it is capable of doing this.
